This place is an inspiration. Its in the Mount Baker neighborhood just a few blocks south if the I-90 lid (or Sam Smith park). Its a 1.6 acre park that is a P-Patch and learning garden in partnership with the Seattle Parks Dept, and its ALL ORGANIC- sweet! It started in 1998 and was finished in 2003. Go to their website and read all about the history and how hard the volunteers and founders worked to make this community project happen.
Here are all the amazing things it has to offer: A small childrens play area with a vintage tractor, a basketball court with one adjustable kids size hoop and 1 regular hoop, a big beautiful pavilion with picnic tables underneath, a childrens educational garden, King County Master Gardner and Seattle Tilth gardens, whose programs each offer classes in the on-site classroom. And most impressive is the public restroom, that has got to be the COOLEST bathroom I have ever seen! Its like floor to ceiling height mosaics of huge bees, butterflies, ladybugs and dragonflies. Just a masterpiece.
The whole garden has great art everywhere, in mosaic stepping stones, wood carvings, found objects, groovy scarecrows, whimsical garden art, the entryway arbors, etc. You can even see a tall vintage windmill that circulates water from the seasonal pond to the dry streambed next to the children's play area. What a fantastic place for a picnic, stroll,or playdate. Just remember to respect all the hard work that has gone into this place, and do not trample or steal the beautiful plants. read more
