Gateway 180 - Gateway 180 :: Homelessness Reversed, the largest emergency shelter for women, children and families in the State of Missouri

Gateway 180

I have had the great honor to work at Gateway 180 :: Homelessness Reversed for three years, so…read moreplease excuse my enthusiasm and pride. Gateway 180 is the largest emergency shelter for women, children and families in Missouri. Located just three blocks from City Museum near downtown St. Louis, this 25-year old agency is dedicated to making sure that homeless families in the shelter are placed into housing within 30 days or less. I recommend that anyone interested in working to end homelessness attend a Gateway 180 "Community Luncheon." These are free (RSVP needed - 314-231-1515) and held on the third Friday of each month from 12p-1pm. These luncheons are for those who want to learn more about St. Louis' fight to end homelessness and Gateway 180's role in that work. You will enjoy meeting like-minded people and having a chance to see first-hand how an organization works collaboratively with leaders and other agencies to strategically address the issue. The organization and its leadership are focused on ending homelessness in our community (not managing it). Gateway 180 has 110 beds and is open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Over 300 persons have been placed into housing this year. The organization also has an extensive food program, serving over 150,000 meals annually and providing bag lunches to those in need. At a cost of $22/person per day, the shelter is one of the most efficient in the nation, operating at 30% of the average daily cost of emergency shelter nationally. Its referral and placement rate and average length of stay position the organization as one of the best-performing shelters in the nation. Every child and family deserve a home, and Gateway 180 :: Homelessness Reversed believes that it is better for the child, better for the family, and better for our community when homeless people are rapidly re-housed.

A Place of Compassion, Kindness, and Hope!…read more I cannot express enough gratitude for the incredible staff at Good Samaritan House in Granite City, Illinois. They are truly a blessing to those of us who need a helping hand during some of life's most difficult moments. My experiences with the staff have always been positive. They are compassionate, loving, understanding, patient, and always willing to help, regardless of the situation. Not once have I felt judged, looked down upon, or treated as anything less than a human being deserving of love, respect, and dignity. What touches my heart the most is their unwavering dedication. I have personally witnessed situations where residents have been unkind, disrespectful, and even hurtful toward the staff. Yet, despite these challenges, they continue showing up day after day, night after night, extending grace, patience, and compassion to the very people they are there to serve. That takes a special kind of heart! They do so much more than provide shelter. They offer encouragement, understanding, stability, and hope. They help people grow, rebuild their lives, and recognize that their circumstances do not define their worth. I know their work is not easy, and I sincerely appreciate the sacrifices they make, the challenges they endure, and the love they continue to pour into others. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU to every staff member at Good Samaritan House. Your kindness has made a difference in my life in ways words cannot fully express. I honestly don't know where I would be without you. May God continue to bless each and every one of you with the strength, patience, peace, and love you so freely give to others. You are seen. You are valued. You are appreciated. And most importantly, YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Five stars simply aren't enough!

I love each one of the wonderful women I work with we make a great team. And we all do our very best at helping the moms and kids if that means hold a baby while the mom makes a bottle then we do that or watch the baby while she does her life skill then we do that or do the life skill for the mom because she has a child who is sick and she needs to take them to the hospital or simply because they had to go to work all they need to do is ask for the help and we help the best way we can. And we provide them with resources to help them find jobs, housing and clothing and other services such as baby bank. And we provide the meat for dinner and most of the time we provide the sides as well.
