After the employee that ignored us asking how to get in finally answered us, he told us to go to the front to enter where we're told we need an appointment 3 days in advance (not posted anywhere until at the door). First please make sure that you are reviewing the correct facility. Belleville Area Humane Society is the second building on the road of S. 11th street in Belleville IL. The first building is the St. Clair County Adoption Center, which is a seperate organization, they are ran by the County goverment. Where as the Belleville Area Humane Socitey is a non profit organization. They are not the same at all. So please please please make sure that you are reviewing the correct location. Also that the facilty has been under new managment staff since late fall of 2010. So please come and visit they have done amazing and wonderful things!!! Their purpose is to give animals that do not have a home a safe temporary home (untill the new family comes along this inculdes the animals that have lived there for years on end), this includes but is not limited to medical care, attention, safe warm dry place to sleep, 2 meals a day fresh water,toys to play with, grooming and bathing, also spay/neutering, and most of all love! I have seen countless staff and voulnteers do amazing things with such little resources. read more

We went here because we wanted to adopt another dog. Place was dirty, animals that were there were mean . I went to the front to speak to someone. There were three people at the front who ignored me while I stood in front of them for about 5 minutes while they chit chatted to one another. They acted like I was bothering them. Very disappointed in this place. read more

My husband and I have adopted two cats from the Belleville Humane Society and will go there again if we ever decide to adopt more. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They answered our questions to the best of their ability. The second time we went in to adopt a cat, the kitten we had chosen was too small and sick to be able to go home with us right away. The staff let us come in once a week to visit with the kitten in their private "getting to know you" room. I think that helped us bond with the little guy, so by the time we were able to take him home, he was very happy to be with us and purred for three days straight. read more

I will never adopt from this agency again. It was a horrible experience. My family and I went and found a puppy we really adored there. We played with him for a good hour and took him on a walk before deciding to make him our own. Filling out the application sheet, we realized that some of the questions were really strange and unclear but we filled it out truthfully and had no doubts. Two days went by and we heard nothing from the Humane Society even though they said they would call the next morning. Finally, we called and they blatantly told us we were denied. Why? Because we do not crate our dog while the family is away and instead let him stay in an enclosed yard with food, water, shade, and a doghouse for no more than 5 hours at a time. If the weather is bad, we leave him inside. I called, dumbfounded about this and asked for the person in charge. I asked her why we were denied. Their reasoning? He might get sick if left out too long and it's better to leave him inside a cage all day. Then, she rudely hung up on me. read more

I've adopted a cat from this charity, and my son and daughter have both volunteered there. So I've seen both sides, and it's a mixed bag. First, most of the workers are volunteers so while the intentions are good the customer service is hit or miss. The shelter manager is a delight, but some of the other staff are so fanatical about animals that they scare off perfectly good, responsible pet owners. For example, the young cat I adopted in 1996 lived to the ripe old age of 16, eventually dying of cancer. When I inquired about adopting another kitty from there, I was told that I would be rejected because I front declaw my (indoor only) cats. Mind you, my cats are well taken care of (as the vet would attest) and receive proper care. On the volunteer side... my daughter has a disability which affects her speech; when she volunteered there she was not treated well by the workers. One of these smarty pants actually asked me if my daughter was retarded or something. My daughter is an animal science major in college and not dumb, but she decided to volunteer elsewhere after that. My son later volunteered there and was well-treated Despite all this I do give money to the shelter as I think most people's hearts are in the right place. If you go to check out the animals (and they have several adorable ones) know ahead of time what you might encounter, and everything should be fine. read more

If you purchase a pet from Craigslist - you are supporting back yard breeders and not rescuing a homeless, unwanted pet. Just because you are ticked because of your negative experience at this Humane Society doesn't mean you should stop your search for a dog in need of a home. Try other rescues and Humane Societies - there are several out there. If you truly love animals - adoption is the loving option - not Craigslist which supports back yard breeders and puppy mills. Literally millions of animals are euthanized each year in America - it is an epidemic! Every time someone purchases from a "breeder" - it takes away from another dog that could have been rescued. These people do more good in this world than most people will in their life time. read more
