The residents were kept safe, and incredibly well looked after, and the communication updates were fantastic. i can't say enough good things about Dunfield. I am forever thankful that my parents made the decision to move there when they did. The staff and many of the residents became like a second family for them. Beauty is skin deep…read more This is a review for all the sons and daughters with parents looking for a retirement home. We all obviously would like to see our parents happy in their last years and while on the surface the Dunfield appears very nice (even with a Star article on how exciting the activities are at the home) I'm here to tell that my personal experience I would discourage having your folks moving into this home. If you do move into this home you'd better make sure that you are nearby at all times, because this home will not be there for you when your parent faces a health crisis. My mother has a history of strokes and she had an episode. I do not live in Toronto and could not be available. When I talked with the director of care during this event she started to tell me that they are not a assisted living facility and could not provide anyone to travel with my mother to the hospital. Now my mother was disorientated and I've spend enough time in Canadian hospitals to realized that if there isn't someone there fighting to get the patient looked at you might not even get treated for a day. In the end, I yelled at the director of care and she finally relented and sent a nurse with my mom. However, I can tell you the stress was extreme and I can assure you don't want to be in that position. I also get the feeling that the home was taking advantage of folks. It is so expensive and yet they don't really take care of everything one might need. For example, they supply one assisted shower per week, and of course if you need the assistance then you are likely going to need additional showers. The Dunfield charges $40 extra for every shower, so be sure to ask for all potential charges. Frankly, I think the home is in a bit of trouble. The last I check they have a large construction project next door (be sure to visit during the week to hear the noise) which will block all views on the north side and they are also blocked on the south side. My mother was never really that happy at the home. Again on the surface things look good, the food is well prepared, and the setting very nice but it was never a particularly friendly environment. She is at a new home now and is very happy so you probably should really feel out the environment. Check out how often people talk in the hallways and in the lobby. In my mother's new home there is a very friendly environment where people talk to each other much more than they did at the dunfield. and that helps keep my your parents happier and I believe healthier. In the end I'd encourage you to have your folks look around and discuss with them what happens during a crisis, this is particularly an issue when you parent is a widow/widower. Make sure you get all the charges and talk through multiple outcomes. Finally, I'd consider a home like the Amica at Villa Da Vinci where they are very focus on taking genuine care of you parents.

I was then informed I could not take the family member there as the respite places were now filled with full time residents. I found the attitude quite cavalier with no concern as to the impact it was having that I would lose my airfare, and months of planning including the booking were of any interest or concern. I'll start by saying there were a couple of staff members that were very good. However, the extent…read moreof disappointing experiences that I encountered are concerning enough that I feel compelled to share this review. My hope is that the information will help others - be it those who live in this establishment or have loved ones there, and help the organization to make improvements. I sure wish I knew some of this information when selecting my mother's new home. Note that these experiences took place during the pandemic, in 2021 and 2022. Intake: Unfortunately, my mother had to be moved 3 times in a 14-month duration, with each move causing my mom great distress, anxiety, and depression. Their intake process did not seem to capture the extent of her cognitive problems and the level of support she required. This led to hiring extra Chartwell PSW's to address this need while she was in the 'independent living' section of the home. That takes me to the next issue... Over-charging: The extra PSW time was not properly tracked by staff, and consequently mom was over-charged hundreds of dollars. This is just what I was able to find with minimal effort on my part. I am grateful that the organization eventually credited these funds. Ongoing need for extra, private PSW's: Even while mom was in the 'memory care' section of the home, staff routinely requested additional, private PSW hours. At one point they suggested 12 hours a day of private PSW time. I want what's best for my mom, but we simply did not expect this extra cost at the level of 'memory care.' The combined monthly cost of 'memory care' plus extra private PSWs, at the suggested 12 hours/day, would have made it more economical for mom to stay at her original house with a 24-hour, private PSW care. If we had followed their advice, mom would have been paying over $20,000/month (including the regular monthly fee). Extra costs: Despite the monthly fees, there are extra costs you can expect - shower curtains; garbage bin; laundry hamper; tissue/toilet paper; etc. Pricier extras included bed and chair alarms, and bed rails. Disorganized mail tracking: Mom was not getting all of her mail. Christmas cards were not always getting to her, and in one case was returned to sender. On her last day before being moved to 'long term care,' I asked if there was any mail for mom. What I got was a bundle of mail, including important mail, that was several months old, in addition to mail belonging to the previous occupant. This leads to my final point... Hair salon: Since mail was not properly tracked, I found out that mom owed over $800 in hair care costs with the third-party salon, Forever Young Hair Care Group, that operates on the ground floor. The hair care costs covered a 6-month period, which included getting 'shampoo set' 3 to 4 times per month at $38/visit. This service was provided while mom was a resident of 'memory care,' and well after she was diagnosed with dementia. The POA's were not consulted, and thus no POA consent was provided. I am grateful that the retirement home eventually covered this cost, although I first had to endure unpleasant and threatening calls and e-mails from this hair care company. On a final note, a big 'thank you' to Kerry Stewart, the General Manager at Scarlett Heights. She did a stellar job investigating these issues and keeping me updated. I wish I encountered her sooner in this experience!
