SHADY and UNSANITARY. I don't know why this location is entitled "br 23 ip". According to the photos, map and location, it's the SHAPEs Brow Bar at the Culver City Westfield Mall. In any case....About 10 years ago, I decided to try this location for brow threading. Toward the end of the service, while reclined with my eyes closed, I noticed the thread felt wet against my brows. I opened my eyes to see the woman pulling the thread through her mouth and feeding it to her hands where she used the wet thread on my brows. I called the corporate office to report my experience. The person I spoke with was apologetic, assured me the staff would be re-trained and offered a free service. I declined but was glad to hear they would address the matter. I avoided SHAPEs for about a decade for that reason. Fast Forward to 2023. In March I decided to give SHAPEs another chance since that threader was probably gone and surely, they weren't using the old school thread-in-the-mouth technique anymore, especially post-Covid. I got my brows done without incident by a young lady who talked me into purchasing a $50 "pre-payment" credit to use for future threadings which would give me a discounted rate on return visits. She took my phone number and told me my phone number is all I needed to give when returning to use the pre-paid credit. I took a photo of my receipt and wrote the phone number I gave on the receipt so I would be sure which number I used. (I discovered today, that on that occasion, the young lady lied to me when giving me my total charge and added her tip into the total. I unwittingly added a tip on top of that. Apparently tip scamming is common at SHAPEs per other reviews). Today, I returned for a brow threading. The young woman at the front desk was very dismissive and didn't greet me. I told her why I was there and she directed me to the only threader there (not the one I had on my last visit). I asked that she please look up my pre-paid credit to ensure there would be no issue when I was done. The threader who could see us from her chair smiled and beckoned me over. I told her I wanted to ensure my credit could be accessed first. Immediately the threader became apparently annoyed with me. I am guessing, they don't like customers using pre-paid credits, (but they don't mind selling them). Perhaps they don't get as large of a commission or she thought I wouldn't tip (I always tip well). Who knows? In any case, I gave her my phone number. She angrily yelled at the front desk clerk for some reason, who then disappeared to the back. At that time I noticed that the threader had a long doubled thread hanging from her mouth!!! (see photos) Yikes. She continued banging at the keyboard, and barked at me that she did not find anything under my phone number. I asked her to look again. She barked the same thing to me. I told her I'd pull up the credit charge and receipt on my phone. She rolled her eyes, then walked away without a word. I was actually relieved because I was not in the mood for wet brows today. I went home and immediately called Shapes Corporate Office. The rep was apologetic, explained threaders had been trained not to put thread in their mouths, Covid had heightened their sanitation standards...blah...blah...blah. I told him I'd taken video and would send it to him in case the threader tried to deny the incident, and that I wanted a refund of my $50 as I did not plan to return. He kept apologizing saying I could go to another SHAPES. I told him I was not interested and wanted a refund. He kept trying to talk me into going to another SHAPES location and never agreed to initiating my refund even though I was CLEARLY entitled to one. So, ultimately, I had to file a dispute with my credit card co. to get the charge removed. Moral of the story, stay away from SHAPEs, unless you enjoy having soggy brows. read more

The person said that it was walk in so I drove 40 minutes to the nearest location to me which was Culver City and when I went in, they refused to accept the Groupon. Whenever I am heading toward OC from LA and if there is traffic, I stop at the Westfield mall in Culver City so I don't end up getting stuck in traffic for 5 hours. They have somany stores that I really like to visit everytime. One of these stores in the Shapes Brow. I wish they had a store in OC but they don't. Their prices are very reasonable especially if you become their member. It is like $15.99 monthly for eye brows and upper lips membership which is a great deal because you can go there as many times as you would want.. Been coming here to get my eyebrows done for several years now. For the most part, my eyebrows are shaped well -- depends on the stylist. The staff is usually pretty nice and quick when tending to customers. The best tip I have in terms of getting the best service is to tell them exactly what you want: for example, I always say I want my brows to stay full, rounded, and thick but just cleaned up around the edges. In the fox hills location, there are 2 shops...one is an actual storefront on the 2nd floor while the other is a pop-up on the first level. When I see the words "Brow Bar" I think of all the wonderful things that a place can do to my eyebrows. Waxing, plucking, threading, defining make up, brow brushes, etc. Well I don't know about you, but when I go to a BAR, I expect to have an array of things to order. I felt as though I wanted a chilled shot of patron... but they only had Belvedere. Sure both get the job done, but it's about preference. I'm talking about threading. I hate it. My wife's experience: I have been coming to this brow bar for about 7-8 ish years and it's always different lately getting much worse. This last visit, is just that my last. My brows look the same with just a few gone I told her she left a lot of hair above my brows and she said my brows are like that. I have gone to other bars and it's they never come out like this. Then when I was done trying to make take them off she the kept insisting I purchase a $35 gift card after I told her no thanks 3 times i handed her my cash and she still asked again I got so frustrated. The time before this was maybe 3 moths prior and same thing except that time the kept trying to get me to get my face or side burns or mustache and even after telling them only brows multiple times they kept insisting. Review for storefront upstairs. Was left waiting for a long time while one brow technician did her colleagues brows, and then they switched. Should have taken it as a sign and left. Woman doing my brows stopped paying attention, started talking on the phone, and gave me totally different eyebrows on each side!! One eyebrow is normal. The other eyebrow looks like the Joker from Batman. I pointed out that one eyebrow it was really weird, in which it curves, and then just goes flat across the rest of my face. $11 for eyebrow threading.. Since I was already at Fox hill mall I thought I would give this place a try. I normally go to Zibas and always have a great experience there. When I walked in on a sunday afternoon, there was one other customer. The workers there seemed very nonchalant and didn't care too much about my presence. I was checked in and left alone sitting there for a good 10min after the other customer had her brows done. When I was finally called the threader did a quick, and somewhat messy job. Not too impressed and left me with bumps all around my eyebrow. I've been threading my eyebrow for sometime and never has it hurt this much. I have been getting my eyebrows done at this place for about a year now and never had any issues. Today, I went in expecting to pay the usual $15 for the service. However, the lady who worked on my eyebrows suggested that I get my forehead done as well and I agreed, assuming it wouldn't cost me anything extra. But when I went to pay, she told me I had to pay $24 instead of the usual $15. She never informed me about the additional $9 charge beforehand. Moreover, she had the audacity to suggest that I do my entire face because it looked bad. Therefore, I advise against going to this place if you are only looking to get some specific service done. And if you do decide to go there, make sure to clarify the cost beforehand to avoid any unexpected charges. However, I should mention that they do a pretty good job on the eyebrows, which is why I gave them a two instead of a one. Over all the vibe is awful. read more

Unprofessional and Rude- not to mention shady AF! I came across Shapes when I moved in the area. I thought their membership service sounded like a great deal. I was SUPER wrong about that. In late May, I started coming in and receiving sub-par service. The new faces there were a bit rude and seemed like they hadn't been threading very long. I was getting pinched regularly and having debates that turned into arguments over what I requested and what I got. I probably should have gotten the message then and stopped using their services. But it was convenient. So I kept going. Huge mistake. When June rolled around I asked to cancel my membership in person at the store. They typed a few keys and told me they would cancel my membership. I'll admit that the young lady at the counter looked confused but she said that since I was cancelling I'd have to pay for my services that day. I paid and then confirmed with her that she had cancelled my membership. She told me she had. Lo and behold, I get charged that month. I call Shapes and speak to a woman who then gives me the number of their "Customer Service" line in order for me to cancel my membership. I contact them and they were friendly enough. I requested cancellation and they claimed they would refund me my money that I had been charged and that would be that. The following month, ANOTHER charge goes through, this time I'm not as nice. I call again, I tell them I cancelled last month and this month. I want my money back. Dude claims he's going to refund my money. It doesn't happen. This month, I'm thinking everything is all good and BOOM, another charge. I call and speak to some guy named Chris who asks me for the names of the two previous Customer Service agent's names. I don't have them. He asks for confirmation numbers. No one provided me with them. So he then accuses me of lying to him. Come on. This can't be the first time you've heard this Chris. Cancel my membership. I'm on the phone with this guy for like 35 minutes and get NOWHERE. He gives me a cancellation number and a lot of attitude and accusation, and we get off the phone. Word to the wise: they say their business hours are 10am-9pm; however, they mean "We want to walk out the door at 9 and not a minute later." I got there before 8:30 and added my name to the list. Waited for between 5 and 10 minutes to be told that I needed to come back tomorrow because it was after 8:30 and there were still people in front of me and they closed at 9. Ooookay... so the last customer is served at 8:30, I guess? That's a perfectly acceptable business practice that a lot of places do, but then there should be some sort of signage stating that. Or at least list the business hours as closing at 8:30 so people aren't blindsided and can plan their trips accordingly. This is their second strike. (Strike 1 was when someone there royally effed up my left eyebrow and covered her mistake by filling them in for me...) I've been a member for four years with monthly payments through my bank. Today I walk in and was told that they ended all old memberships and if you want to reenroll the monthly cost is double. This without warning or notice. In businesses that value old customers a premium is paid for loyalty, and old customers are grandfathered in with higher charges only for new customers. I'm disappointed in Shapes Brow Bar in the way they handled this. Shapes, do better by your loyal loving my term customers. As it stands, I'll go elsewhere where long term customers are valued. Was doing some errands in Westfield Mall in Culver City and saw the Shapes Brow Bar kiosk and decided to give it a try. I always wanted to try threading since I had an allergic reaction from waxing and have been tweezing for years. Ami was my technician. At first when she asked me to disinfect my hands I was a little concerned but it is for you for when she asks you to hold portions of your face. The threading did not hurt and didn't leave any red marks. It was very clean and efficient. I think it was a total of nine minutes. Pretty good for $11 plus a $3 tip. read more

Shapes is one of my regular threading places, but is not my favorite. The mall has 2 locations....a kiosk and a store front. The kiosk usually has more of a wait. I went today and the customer service was horrible. The wait was ridiculous and then the lady spent so much time talking to another employee instead of doing my eyebrows that it took 3 times longer than it should have taken. I definitely think I'll skip the kiosk next time and go to the storefront the next time I'm at this mall. The customer service is not worth it the wait!!! read more

I'd probably give this place two stars if not for the fact that I love the lady who threads me. I don't know about everyone else, but I am super picky about my eyebrows. Once I find a person I can trust with my caterpillars, I don't want to go to anyone else. I've been going to Shapes for a few years now and have had some pleasant experiences and some majorly non-pleasant ones. I do believe it is completely up to the person who you use to thread your brows, and because Shapes seems to have a bunch of mediocre threadoligists (whatever, I'm going with it), I feel I need to give my fellow yelpers some tips. Save yourself the time and don't show up on a Friday night or Saturday. You'll be waiting forever. Monday - Thursday evenings are usually pretty calm and Sundays can be too. This place is clean and has a lot of different ladies working the bar or the upstairs. I find that both locations have very blah customer service. The girls that man the cashier and/or wait list or not very friendly, not very attentive and if you're a first timer, you really wouldn't know what to do. If you are a first timer, just stroll right in and write your name on the list and they'll call your name when it's your turn. With that said, in the column where you can request a person to thread you, write down Najiba or Amy. Trust me. Najiba is my absolute favorite and she will not disappoint. She takes her time, but when it comes to the art of eyebrows, I prefer someone who is careful and precise. Stay away from the heavier set woman with the really thick, long hair. She mutilated my brows and gave me several cuts. More than several. Her excuse, "You have strong roots." Hah. And you have weak skills. If you frequent this place, ask about the membership. If you're a werewolf like me, it'll be totally worth it. I have to make the trip twice a month and one trip ends up being free. Don't bother coming here if you want to get waxed. They "claim" to also do waxing but their girl is almost always never around. It's a risky business, trusting someone new with your brows, I've taken a leap of faith a few times at Shapes and am almost always disappointed. If you're meticulous about your eyebrows like I am, don't risk it. Go with someone you know, or if you're really in a pinch and just need to see someone here, definitely see if Najiba or Amy are available. Otherwise, Good luck to you. read more

I wish I could give zero stars, but I can't. This review is strictly for the management and how the business is operated. I really feel bad for the threaders/stylist, because they aren't able to fully focus on their craft, due to the lack of structure. Customer service is HORRIBLE! Not only is there a wait for the actual service, but you literally have to wait to pay as well. And if you have the membership, the staff must call "corporate" everytime to get your number to credit the transaction. How screwed up is this process? I know the prices are pretty inexpensive, but geez, structure and good customer service is worth more in the long run for the business. My experience in the past has always been the same...mediocre aside from the brow threading. Today was especially atrocious. I walked in (to the upstairs location), put my name on the list, decided to stand to the side, since there were only 2 people ahead, then someone that came in after me, was called to the chair by the incompetent semi-receptionist/greeter/make-up consultant. When I inquired, she claimed to have already called my name... This entire process from beginning to end was about 5 minutes... I was thoroughly upset at the confusion, the poor management, the incompetence, and the fact that I left without being threaded!! And of course...no manager on duty, thus no one to hold responsible for this nonsense. These poor threaders didn't even have enough cash in the register to cover client payments. This review is NOT about the quality of the eyebrow services I received because those were always amazing. I have moved out of the area, and therefore have attempted to cancel my membership. In order to do this you must call their "corporate" office. 1st call: "Hello, I'd like to cancel my membership." "Great, we'll take care of it ... Blah blah blah we'll send you a confirmation email." "Okay, thanks." Phone call ends. NO COURTESY, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS WHATSOEVER. A few days later, I GET BILLED FOR MY MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP. I never received an email. 2nd call: "Hi, I called last week to cancel my membership but was still charged." "Okay, no problem. We'll refund you, it takes 5-7 business days." "Okay great." A MONTH LATER, STILL NO REFUND. I think whatever, I'm just done dealing with them. The guy said my membership was cancelled ... They can have the $13. This morning, I check my bank statement and I have ANOTHER CHARGE, for ANOTHER MONTH of membership .. Now I am LIVID. This is NOT OKAY BY ANY MEANS, and I am HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED.
