I've never read a review of a gas station in my life. When the lowering fuel indicator on my…read moredashboard starts bending towards empty, I've never felt the urge to fire up Yelp and begin perusing 5 star reviews. I just swing in to the nearest gas station and apply my unique talents to the problem at hand. Yet, here I am writing a review of a damn gas station. I just had to. The Massachusetts Turnpike (well, the "Mass Pike" for locals), for the 30 mile stretch between Marlborough and Boston, is probably the longest parking lot in the north east...hell, the whole country. I swear regular drivers bring picnics. The slow-ups and full stops are a persistent feature and, apart from a few lane-swapping lunatics, most drivers seem resigned to their delayed fate...late for whatever was the long forgotten reason for their journey. Unfortunately, flights out of Boston Logan require this ordeal as the price of escape. And it isn't funny. A 5pm departure from Marlborough to catch a 7pm departure from Logan is never the most sensible choice, especially when the rental car needs gas before returning it to the off-airport location. Which brings me to this particular gas station. It's the only one in the entire airport vicinity, and the thousands of drivers who stupidly booked departing flights at the time I did all have the same plan - battle the turnpike, fill with gas, drop car off at rental center, take the slowest ever bus shuttle to the terminal, dance through the security porno-scanner then sprint to the gate before collapsing in a limited legroom economy seat for 4 hours of abuse from United back to Denver. What could possibly go wrong? I've been to this gas station too many times. Prices are gougingly exhorbitant. There are a lot of pumps but not enough pumps. Cars enter the pump area from both directions. There are lines of about 20 cars pretending to queue up for each pump. But nothing of the sort. All semblance of respect for our fellow humans goes out of the window like spent fumes from an exhaust. Minor fender collisions are frequent...arguments break out...the "one-finger salute" is de rigeur. I've seen fights between drivers thought to be queue jumping. It's a veritable dogs breakfast. The roads in its vicinity are jammed with thirsty cars. Everyone is frustrated...everyone has a flight to catch. And then, in this expense report driven world, the satisfying "click" on the nozzle as the tank is full...return the nozzle to the holder and wait for receipt. "Please see the attendant for receipt". Missed flight. My advice. Don't every come here...ever. Fill up out of town...anywhere. This place is a disaster.
