I don't really have the words today.
My dog declined very quickly over the course of about 7 weeks.
She presented with diarrhea and gas that wasn't resolving with probiotics and modified diet. We took her in, ran a fecal that was clear, gave her metro and cerenia, probiotics and modified diet. If the diarrhea didn't improve recommended sending out a bacterial fecal. Gas improved, diarrhea started too as well, then got worse.
Her appetite tanked, she became lethargic, was thirsty and experienced physical changes.
Upon taking her back in Dr. Boyd was stumped. Ran another fecal that was clear, bloodwork showing anemia and suggested it was blastomycosis. He ordered hundreds in testing and meds without even suggesting imaging.
I called back to ask why he hadn't suggested that and who he recommended so I could have it done.
His referral was one of the more expensive clinics in town.. We went to a different clinic in sparta for half the cost and her chest and abdomen were chock full of fluid and masses, the largest being next to her heart.
Almost every organ she had was displaced.
In lieu of putting her through more pain and discomfort in diagnostic testing, we opted to euthanize her.
We had this done at Boyds office.
The staff were patient and caring, but they performed the procedure on a slippery, elevated stainless steel table.
As someone who has spent years working for clinics and assisting with at home euthanasia, I felt this was unnecessary.
I would have preferred, as a very pregnant person with a weak dog to boot, that the table was either lowered to the floor or a grippy surface was placed on top....because she was uncomfortable on the slippery table for her last few moments, as was I.
I have been slow to pick up her ashes and I honestly haven't had the heart to drive there.
My husband went in today and was told there is an additional $45 charge for a blood test on her account that was not previously discussed and there was no prior notification whatsoever.
Ultimately, I think this practice provides a much needed, affordable and comprehensive service to the community in regards to preventative and routine care, but I am personally put off by how some of our diagnostic and end of life care was handled.
In the future, I will return to the imaging practice we used, bluegrass veterinary clinic, for their diagnostic abilities and communication. I would also recommend them if you need local diagnostic imaging in a pinch.
Previous review:
This place is a hidden county gem tucked away off 290.
Dr. Boyd and his support staff are knowledgeable, kind and incredibly patient.
As a local groomer/trainer I refer this practice regularly.
Very thankful to have been referred to them myself and will definitely be back!! read more
