I usually tend to go big with hotels on vacations because I like the feeling of being fancy ;) But Boxotel really suited my partner and I's needs so well and at such a good price. This is the first hotel I've been to where there is no people interaction at all. There is no front desk or anyone to check in/out with. They send you a code in advance and you use it every time you enter the hotel and for your room. For some, maybe this would not be great but it was simple and easy for us. The rooms are equipped with kitchenette's and king size murphy beds, giving you both a lot of room and ability to live a little more like you would at home. The kitchenette was well stocked with plates, silverware, etc. I was actually a bit surprised that the bed was comfortable and I had no major qualms with the bathroom. It didn't have the water pressure I would prefer, but most hotels don't. And to top it off, I found this very convenient in terms of access to neighbourhoods we were visiting. Would definitely stay here again next I'm in Montreal. read more

I wish I could have rated this hotel higher, as it is clean and has decent amenities, however the owner/ manager/ Carlos, whatever his title is, made this stay so uncomfortable that I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. 1. Can't get in the building without code before check in time When booking a hotel, the advantage over an AirBnb is you expect a level of hospitality. For example, my fight arrived before check in time. I would expect I can go to the hotel, drop by bags off, and come back when the room is ready. However, when you get to the hotel, the door is locked. You have to call to be let in. When in a foreign country, this puts you in a tough and scary situation. I bit the bullet, ignoring my cell phone bill, and called anyway. Carlos hung up on me several times. When I finally got him to stay on the line, I deduced that he only stayed on when I tried to speak French (I cannot. I just said "Bonjour.. Umm... sorry.... Can I speak English?"), even though he can obviously speak English. 2. He is watching your every move It appears to be a minimal human interaction hotel for introverts. Which sounds great! You feel like you have your privacy and can relax and enjoy your stay. This is an illusion. Carlos is watching your every move on camera, sometimes just in the office on the first floor. When my friend and I were leaving our room and heading out of the lobby, he popped out of the office, saying "you're staying in room X, right?" ...how would he know that? It felt really creepy and uncomfortable. On to my next point... 3. Misleading listing/ hidden fees after the fact After he popped out and told us what room we were in, he continued to accost us by saying we had 3 people in our room, which was not allowed. Firstly, again, how would he know that had he not been stalking the cameras? Secondly, we booked a room that said "1-4 people" and we are 3 people, which happens to fall nicely between 1 and 4. We explained we searched for the largest room that could accommodate the 3 of us, found the listing for 1-4 people, and booked it. There was nothing nefarious or sneaky about this, and we did not think we did anything wrong. After clarifying that we booked the more expensive room for up to 4 people, he said it was actually for 2 adults and 2 children. However, the top of the listing says 1-4 people in bold. We booked so long ago that he honestly could have changed the listing since then. But when we pulled it up in the moment, it still said 1-4 people in bold in the title. Then at the bottom of the description in fine print said 2 adults, 2 children. Again, we paid for the more expensive room with no ill intention, and explained we had other friends in the hotel with extra space, and one of us would go there for the next night. It didn't matter. He charged us $50 per night (for 2 nights, $100 total), even though we only broke the "rule" one night. 4. As an aside, we didn't realize this was kind of a sketchy area. There's a homeless shelter around the corner, and a homeless man followed us trying to slap us, and ended up slapping one of my friends, scratching her eye. Just an FYI to be on the lookout. All in all, we felt so uncomfortable the entire stay being on edge after getting physically assaulted on the street outside the hotel, and getting verbally accosted by Carlos, knowing he was monitoring us and might accost us again at any time. I sincerely don't understand why this man chose to work in hospitality, he clearly has no interest in providing a relaxing, comfortable stay for his guests. True to this statement, I know Carlos will respond to this review and continue to try to gaslight me. I won't waste any more of my time, and you shouldn't waste yours by making the mistake of booking a stay here. read more

The the third person was only there to help us bring up ourroom was fine but the staff were horrible. We were accused repeatedly of having 3 people in our room no matter how many times I said only 2. It was as if they were calling us liars. (the third person was only there to help us bring up our bags. You will never see a human being, but they are watching every move you make by cameras that are installed everywhere. it was very creepy. Also the 2 sofa beds promised upon booking were not there which made our stay very difficult. At The Boxotel, every detail was intentionally chosen and designed. The room was equipped with every necessity and designed beautifully with an efficient use of space. We loved the floor to ceiling windows with the curtains that automatically opened upon first entry. We enjoyed all the modern technology in the room -- from the shower to the wireless phone charger to the embedded washer/dryer. Every feature was thoughtfully considered for the guest experience. The espresso machine in the lobby met all our caffeine needs throughout the day. The ceramics, soap products, towels and more all had elegant boxotel labels, an extra detail that elevated the experience. Downstairs, you will find the most aesthetic gym with beautiful light wood workout equipment, and upstairs there is small studio for yoga practice. They even have new, quality yoga mats you can use. We thoroughly enjoyed the rooftop, with the dry and steam sauna, hot tub and various seating areas. We drank a glass of wine at sunset up here, as well as read with a coffee in the morning. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a recent long-term stay at Boxotel. Overall, the stay was just what we were looking for. The decor is lovely- minimal and not sterile, as most hotels tend to feel. The in-room amenities including a full kitchen, bathtub, and washer-dryer truly helped us to relax and feel at home in Montreal. The hot tub on the roof overlooking the skyline was perfect for unwinding. However there were a couple of cons that we felt important to mention: Pillows: some of the worst we have encountered in a hotel. Very flat and lumpy and did not provide any support while sleeping. Shower amenities and soaps: I believe they were eco-friendly but they were very drying and irritating to use, especially the shampoo and conditioner. Bathroom glass: we were prepared upon reviewing the booking emails from management and previous reviews regarding the frosted glass on the bathroom. However, really only half of the wall is frosted (their is a wide strip of frosted glass in the middle of the pane, the top and bottom are not frosted). This results in anyone sitting on the couch, bed, or at the desk to have a full view into the bathroom under the frosted glass. Overall, it's a great hotel if you are looking for something non traditional. It feels like an AirBnB, with the amenities of a hotel. However, if you are planning to staying with a guest, I would consider the bathroom privacy situation prior to booking. read more

This boutique hotel is one of the best ones i have ever stayed at! The decor was chic and modern, and the room was well-furnished with everything one could need, including all the cooking tools for the kitchenette. It was an eco-friendly room, and everything worked perfectly. The cafe was also delicious!!! The breakfast every morning was something to look forward to - their scones were scrumptious, as were their flaky croissants. Their homemade yogurt and granola were also delicious. A last minute hotel we needed to stay an extra night, and what a great find it was! The room was very big compared to where we were down the street, balcony and soaking tub were added bonuses. All features were very new, modern and clean. The full kitchen stocked with supplies was more than I had expected. We didn't get to use the jacuzzi on the roof but looked amazing and would love to return for a winter trip to use it. Bed was huge and super comfortable! It being a Murphy bed did not effect anything. Coffee shop downstairs was perfect for the mornings! A little noise in the morning from commuters but not really too bad. It has to be expected staying in a city. Only complaint/odd thing was one morning someone was working on our door knob/ key fob entry... early and without notice. Apparently it was broken or giving them problems? Other than that, Totally recommend this place!! read more

The only place I stay in Montreal. The rooms are really perfect, the modern loft vibe, giant windows let in lots of light, comfortable bedding, great showers. The automatic curtains and music when you walk in the room are a cute touch. There aren't traditional hotel conveniences like a restaurant or little shop, but, just plan to hit up one of the convenient shops nearby. There's coffee in the lobby that's pretty good. They used to have Nespressos in the room which I loved, but last time it was just a French press and no grounds. The rooftop hot tub is awesome but I was surprised to find it's not just one tub, but has a second like, triple size tub than can run cool. Almost like a mini pool. They've really done the best with the space they have. The location is nicely situated between areas of town, right by lots of food and shopping (a couple block walk), and they offer free bike rental which is a nice touch. I'll be back! read more

Horrible experience at this hotel. The manager Carlos is absolutely rude and Narcisstic and discriminatory. He charged us for things we did not do and seems to have a trend in picking on people that are "different". I did not feel safe at all staying at this place and he proceeded to enter our room without permission or letting us know so he could check for "smoke smell". We did not violate any rules, we did not use ANY of the subpar amenities and we checked out and did not complete our stay. My husband and I work hard and wanted to experience a relaxing time and as a neurodivergent person I experienced the opposite. Horrible. Just don't go. read more

So much to like about this apartment-style hotel. It's in a perfect location for someone who doesn't want to be right in the thick of it but still wants access to the Metro, restaurants, and all the good stuff (i.e., a relatively quiet corner which was perfect for us). Great staff. Wonderful breakfast (included!) in the morning. Loved having a well-equipped kitchen and a rooftop terrace with BBQ, hot tub, and other amenities. Our room had a balcony on which to enjoy our French-pressed coffee in our Boxotel robes each morning. Appreciated having free Bixis, too, which we took advantage of. We'd stay here again for sure. It is definitely austere and modern-minimalist - nothing decorative or comforting/homey in the room. White walls, concrete floors; that sort of decor. A couple of drawbacks: the bed was Murphy-style which, while incredibly comfy, became a bit of a pain to put up each day and reassemble the seating area. Also, there was no place to put our stuff, really; no counter space in the bathroom for toiletries (no counter!) and we had to get creative with the luggage since there was no luggage rack, closet to speak of, or good place to unload. If you're looking for a very traditional hotel experience this will likely not be your cup of tea. If you're self-sufficient and don't mind putting up with a few inconveniences in order to have an overall great place to stay, don't think twice about booking here! read more

Yay! When booking my Montreal trip, I was immediately drawn to the aesthetic of this hotel. It's clean, modern, and minimalistic. I loved that there was a kitchen in the room, despite the fact that I barely used it. Everything is laid out well and there's a full-size fridge and a washer and dryer. The bed was cozy and comfortable, the bathroom was sleek and functional, and I loved the giant tub in the room. I used it to soothe my aching muscles after using a Bixi bike to climb Mont Royal. I also really liked that the bed is a murphy bed; if you push it up into the wall, you reveal several little ottomans and a bench so you could potentially have a little shindig in this hotel room, which is actually more like a studio apartment. Bonus: you get free breakfast at the cafe downstairs. read more

First time in this brand new establishment, it will not be the last for sure. Everything is there to enjoy one single or several nights in Montreal. Very nicely decorated and furnished rooms with local products and furniture. Very comfy beds. Gym is small but with nice equipment and "icing on the cake" a sauna, steam room and spa on the roof top terrace with everything for you to enjoy sunny evenings with friends, family or colleagues. Probably one of the best hotels I've stayed at. Room included everything from kitchen utensils to a washer and dryer (w/ detergent!) which was extremely convenient. The rooftop is equipped with an outdoor spa which is great for the summer. Location is perfect too - walking distance to many places but also conveniently located near several bus stops to get you further out. Staff are very nice, and they even allowed us to check in as early as 8:30am free of charge since our room was ready. There's a coffee shop in the lobby that provides free breakfast every morning so that's a plus. There are just too many positives to Boxotel - we'll definitely stay here again when we're back in Montréal! read more

The hotel has a slick modern vibe, which we like and that's why we chose it. We stayed there twice. Our first room was on the 5th floor and we loved it. It was really convenient to have a kitchen and laundry right in the room. We used the laundry as we had already been traveling a week. It was SO handy! We LOVED room 502. And there's a Nespresso machine with some capsules to use! And a balcony! I wish we had stayed longer. I would have used the kitchen, gym, and sauna. It was cold and raining, so we didn't use the little balcony. Loved the folding chairs that hung on the wall and the expandable table. And the dishes were handy and nicely designed. So the kitchen was fully functional. Then we left for Quebec City for a few days but decided to come back to Boxotel and fly out of Montreal to get home. The room we got on the second second stay was on the second floor and was still nice decor, but there was no partition in the shower, so water got on the floor near the sink and was slippery. So we put towels on it so we wouldn't slip, but I think they need a partition like in our first room. The glass looks great also (they have etched designs on the glass). Also in room 205 (the second room) the bed is parallel with the wall so we had to climb over each other to get out of bed and there was no headboard so the pillows fell on the floor (which was a very clean floor, but still, it would have been better if they hadn't.) Both rooms had a balcony and laundry facilities (which we used both times), and equivalent kitchens. I agree with whoever said it was like a furnished studio apartment. The staff are very friendly and helpful. And the cafe in the Sous Sol was great. Loved our breakfast! And they were working on adding more capability while they were there. Next time it will be a real restaurant! So we will go back. We like the place, and recommend it! read more

This is where you want to stay! The location could not be more ideal. Close to everything you will want to see. Public transportation just around the corner. To start the industrial vibe to the hotel and rooms is very tastefully done. Rooms are well laid out with a complete kitchen with a nice size fridge, freezer, oven, microwave, dishwasher and ever has a washer and dryer. We stayed 4 nights on the first part of our trip. The reception personnel were friendly and extremely helpful. The gentleman at the cafe with our included breakfast were very nice as well. This was a great find and well worth the reasonable price. It even has yoga mats in the room so I took advantage of that the stretch in the morning. Would highly recommend! read more

I feel like I could live in this place. Every amenity is smartly designed into a space that feels like a slick, modern, minimalist studio apartment. The rain shower fixture was deligtful. The remote controled lighting and window dressings were super cool. Room had a full kitchen, washer, dryer, dishwasher-unbelievable great deal. And the roof top terrace with hot tubs, lounge like patio furniture, BBQ grill and view of the city was epic. My boyfriend and I stayed here over New Year's Eve weekend. They had just opened and I believe we were some of the first guests. The room itself was AMAZING. Everything was high-tech, clean, and beautiful, and it really seemed they had put thought into every little detail, down to the tissue boxes (seriously). The owner was also incredibly gracious in accommodating us even though there was a mix-up with our booking on Travelocity's website. With the location of the hotel right in the quartier des spectacles, everything was within walking distance, including a cat cafe (!), bars, restaurants, and shopping. This is an excellent aparthotel in the middle of Downtown Montreal and the Gay Village. The hotel aesthetic is very industrial chic with each "box" (room) conveniently and comfortably set up as studio apartments. The apartments are fully loaded with everything you need to feel at home, from utensils down to laundry, dishwasher and detergents. Place is extremely clean and self sustained. It was very quiet and peaceful, though right in the heart of Montreal, with plenty of great restaurants, shops and sights within an easy walking distance.
