We were so happy when the old Carmel Cinema reopened, because it's great to have a local movie house. The Box Office theater is basically unmodified from its predecessor, with a number of small projection rooms. It's clean, sound quality is okay, and they run discounts for Tuesdays ($7) and matinees ($11), plus $1.95 "convenience" fee if purchasing tickets online.
On our first visit after the reopening, our big issue was the buttered popcorn. First, the popcorn was so salty, it made your mouth burn. Secondly, within about 5 minutes of leaving the theater, both my partner and I had to urgently run to the bathroom with cramps and diarrhea. It was neither pretty nor fun.
Popcorn and movies are made for each other, so for us, this was a big fail and we've not been back. I miss Empire Cinemas in Brewster--while it was a quirky theater, they had the best popcorn around. We might reconsider Box Office Cinemas if the theater upgrades their popcorn and cuts the salt, or allows you to bring your own. read more
