It's located in a very walkable area of Quebec City that's surrounded by countless specialty shops and cafes, and I wish I had more time (and more money) to spend in this awesome shop! It's crowded inside. It's very crowded. The store isn't really all that large, but they manage to put three store's worth of merchandise in one small location. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, it's all merchandise. The merchandise is crazy and awesome. There are vinyl records, games, comics, vintage signs and post cards, ages-old memorabilia, and more stuff than I could adequately remember to include. It was, of course, the vinyl record display outside the store that caught my attention. The staff was awesome and spoke both French and English. (I applaud the fact that so many people spoke both, when Americans (myself included, but I do know a fair amount of Spanish) tend to master only one language). Magasin Général P.L. Blouin is an amazing, charming, memorabilia filled shop that I wish wasn't so far away.

Low pressure souvenir shopping environment…read more This was the most comfortable store to shop in out of 10 stores that I shopped in. Also reasonable prices. Kind of disorganized but I liked the low key environment. The manager was very pleasant and accommodative and went downstairs to bring up more of a hat that I was trying on so that I can compare more on fit and feel. I ended up purchasing a Canada Hat here.

QUEBECOIS ARTISAN'S WOODWORK SHOP AND STUDIO…read more While visiting Old Quebec, we dropped by Sculpteur Flamand. Located in the heart of Basse Ville (Quartier Petit Champlain), the shop is full of small and large pieces of hand carved wood sculptures. The pieces range from cute gnomes to relief sculptures of people and Canadian wildlife. Above the shop, we saw the studio where the woodcarvings are created. While planning our trip, we had read how a group of artists in the 1970-1980s transformed a rundown area of abandoned historic buildings into what is now the thriving Petit Champlain district. Monsieur Alain Flamand was among those early pioneers who opened a shop and studio here.

Everything was super cool to look at but having someone constantly staring at us made us both ready to leave. This shop has a very strict no photos rule which I can understand, but what was frustrating for us as customers was the fact that we were followed throughout the store by an employee who continuously asked us questions as we looked at their merchandise. We thought about purchasing a few different handmade journals, but after being followed we walked out empty handed. Moral of the story, this shop had a great selection of merchandise (which is reasonably priced), but the customer service killed it for us here.

It's my favorite kind of store, featuring handcrafted wares. They're of high quality and are imaginative. There were earrings made of pieces of vinyl records combined w/ sterling silver and others made of pieces of the record labels. There were necklaces of dichroic glass, handmade notebooks of denim and leather and very fine ceramic pieces. There were very cool puppets. My favorites were a couple of cats clothed in sumptuous robes. There were gorgeous painted silk scarves. And that's just what I can remember admiring. One of the artists was staffing the shop and she was friendly and welcoming w/o being the least high pressure. The shop was a welcome contrast to all the touristy shops selling souvenirs that surrounded it. It's close to the port so when cruise ships are in town it's readily available, although I suspect most cruisers are heading for the souvenir shops. Too bad.
