Walmart's selection is quite scarce while Fabric Mart is well stocked with the basics, Japanese designs, and Hawaiian prints. Korean material is almost non-existent on Oahu. However, my friend, Donna O., spotted some on Instagram. There's a local vendor named 808 Craft and Gift Fairs. The business page showed some really cute patterns, especially Cony (the white bunny from Line Friends) fabric! I messaged the business and was invited to come over and take a look. I arrived in Pacific Palisades in Pearl City, Oahu in the afternoon. It was perfect timing because the owner, Lauren, was outside and finishing up with the customer before me. She invited me onto her property (with her guard dog) to check out items in her silver colored van. The front passenger seat was filled with face masks made in Korea. There were children's sizes as well as adult sizes. Lauren showed me the quality stitching and the wire nose guards which prevent fogging on eyeglasses. The back of the van held the fabrics. They're currently going for $25 for two yards. Some were linen, some were solids, and some were kawaii prints. I focused on the pandas for my nieces and the sloths for my friend, Dear Daniel... lol! Lauren also pointed out the soft, durable Japanese elastic. It's good for replacing elastic that will eventually stretch out. We don't think that there will be an end to this COVID-19 lifestyle, so, we may as well be prepared and have fresh elastic on hand. Right now, she's offering 100 yards (black or white, 1/8 inch width) for $35. Note: If you bring cash or use venmo, there's a slight discount. Service is outstanding because Lauren is so knowledgeable, personable, and helpful. (It turns out that she married my friend's cousin.) With lots of clothing of all kinds what gets me here really are the accessories as they have so much to choose from from various bling jewelry to eye pillow (my newest obsession to relax) to stickers, mugs and keychains. First off, I love this store!…read more Living on the mainland, there are so many crafting supplies that are unique to Hawaiʻi, and every time I walk into Ben Franklin Crafts, I find myself wandering the aisles thinking, "Ooh... I don't have this back home" and in goes the item in my cart. What brought me in today tho, was to support one of the local small businesses that rents a "locker" inside the store. I absolutely love this concept. Ben Franklin has created a space where local makers can showcase and sell their work, giving shoppers the chance to support dozens of independent businesses all under one roof. Honestly, if money were no object, I'd probably leave with something from every locker. The variety is incredible, and it's fun seeing all the creativity from local artisans. Whether you're a serious crafter, looking for a unique gift, or just enjoy browsing, this place is sooo dangerous... in the best way possible. This little hidden gem is on a corner, so parking is somewhat of a challenge to find but, they do have a parking lot on Liliha St, a little small but, if you're patient, you can find parking since they share a parking lot with a cafe next door (hot tip: get there a little early, stop by the cafe next door, get yourself a sweet treat and then go shopping) which is exactly what my friend and I did this morning! Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by Val and her sister, and felt like we were raiding our sister's bead/craft closet! They have such a large section of beads, lei beads, ribbons, decals, and beading supplies amongst other things. My friend and I arrived at 10:40 this morning, and omg, didn't leave until 12:45! You can honestly spend all day in there easily! We had such a blast in there, and everyone was so helpful, especially because my friend and I had an idea of what we wanted to do but didn't know exactly what we needed! I'm not going to lie, I got a total of 20 decals, BUT they're not all for me, and they're going to be used for presents! Another hot tip: if you feel like you get overwhelmed easily, come to the store with a few bead/lei projects in mind already and look for what you need. I came here without a plan, and I got a lot of the stuff I was looking for, but realized that I need to sit down and organize my thoughts for what I want to make and for whom, so I can plan accordingly for my next visit!
