Food is different. Had jalapeño hushpuppies they could have kept the hot sauce. I had crab cakes with succotash and grits which was decent and different but I've had much better crab cakes. With gas being over $4, you'd think that people coming to a restaurant would actually be sat. Stood at the host station for long while before someone told me to sit anywhere, but I was previously told to wait until a host sat me. I even called the restaurant 4 times trying to get a host to seat me. Saved my money but wasted my gas. Came here for a last minute date night and OMG was it good! Sat at the community table which was a great option given the place was packed. Took a risk ordering the Viet chicken sandwich as it was really different from all other Southern inspired menu options and it was AMAZING. Also ordered the shrimp and grits which was great, but that chicken sandwich was truly to die for and a really nice portion size. Wow. Seriously. Walked in to the hostess who took our temperature and let us choose to sit outside which was perfect because the weather was exactly what we were hoping for! An incredible welcome back to the small city I used to live in. Was never one to get too excited about any establishment in Columbia but when I read the description of this place, of course I had to try it. This place lived up to everything I hoped for and more. The drinks were unique and amazing. Made perfect each time with a twist in each different style of cocktail and the food...fuggedaboutit. Every bite was incredible out of the three appetizers I ordered. The place was a little crowded but so much that it made you feel like you were in a cheesy pub/club. Plenty of parking in the street and parking structures nearby so it's not a headache to get here find a spot and get to eating and drinking. I did my homework and visited a few other spots. The food is good but a very interesting mix... growing up in Houston, I had a lot of friends from Louisiana and ate a lot of Cajun & love it! But Bourbon also has some Southern twists to the dishes. We came on a SUNDAY night and boy was it packed. Bourbon is a short walk from the University of South Carolina and the State House. Columbia reminds me a lot of Sacramento (in California), which makes sense because this is the state capital too. Bourbon was a short drive from our hotel and was recommended for its interesting cocktail menu and their large varieties of whiskey and bourbon. We got seated right away, thank goodness because in the next ten minutes, people just kept coming in. We sat at the bar and got to see the bartenders making drinks. There was a really interesting one where they used smoke to cover over a drink. I can't remember the name of what I got to drink but it was icey and fruity? R got an old fashioned I believe. Very generous on the pouring. We also ordered the brussel sprouts, the duck gumbo, and the brisket burger. It took a while for our food to come out because apparently they hadn't expected a large crowd on Sunday nights so were understaffed. The brussel sprouts were quite crisp. I liked my duck gumbo-full of flavor..and fat haha. R said the brisket burger wasn't as tender as it could be. Personally, I think the food they serve is quite generous for a restaurant that makes really cool cocktails. Most of the people sitting next to us ordered small bites and lots of drinks. The interior is pretty modern and dark. The servers and the bartenders were all very nice and it made for a nice Sunday night. read more

Great food, great vibe! The restaurant is located in a pretty central part of COLA where there are a lot of pedestrians. When I first walked in, I was a little surprised by how small the place was, but our waiter accommodated our 7 person group easily. I tried the Bourbon biscuits - which were so good. The bourbon flavor was pretty strong, but the blueberry compote was sweet enough that bourbon wasn't the only flavor you got. I don't remember the name of my meal, but it was a breakfast sandwich with egg, bacon, mustard, and tomatoes (?). Not sure, but it's the only breakfast sandwich on the brunch menu. The sandwich was so good!! I had it with a salad on the side. The salad was really nicely dressed and it was light. Would definitely hit this place up again if I'm ever in the area. read more

This is a very difficult review and everyone knows I love to give good reviews. We were seated quickly as we had just left the Tyler Perry play and seating was filling up fast. The waiter gave us several minutes to decide what we were eating and all was well. When our dinner came out someone else ran the food, no problem. However, we never saw our waiter again. Our onion rings were not warm, they were cold. Our drinks never got refilled and all our food was spicy. I finally had to get the hostess to get a manager. We waited over 15 minutes for a manager to show up and meanwhile the waiter came back asking if we needed anything. I could see that he was busy but he started blaming everyone else instead of giving me solutions or asking me if I want another order of onion rings. He then told me I was not his only customer. I said ok and waited another 10 minutes for the mgr to come up and say she was bartending and could not get away. Needless to say I did not pay for the onion rings but I did not feel important enough to return for another try. Price for food is a bit steep and menu is limited. read more

Looking for a place in Columbia SC that's a little quirky, has GREAT food, and a bourbon selection that would make a #briarhopper jealous? I found the place. Start at the State Capitol and head down Main Street about a block. Keep your eyes right (or you'll walk by the place). Ask to sit at the "community" table next to the bar so that you can socialize with the other smart folks that decided to ignore the joints nestled along Gervais St - leave those to @guyfieri. I won't speak for my team, but the grilled cab bavette steak was incredible. The steak was grilled to perfection and accompaniments were spot on. Don't bother reaching for the salt and pepper (and please don't ask for A1), Chef Frank Bradley doesn't need your amateur help. As I mentioned the bourbon selection gave credibility to the name. I didn't partake, but being from KY I travel well stocked. The beer selection was local and well paired at the recommendation of the staff. So if you are looking to treat yourself to a great meal and atmosphere, travel off the beaten path and search this place out. You will not be disappointed. read more

My 1st time at Bourbons, the line was out the door , but the estimated wait time was accurate. We step next door and had a very $$ drink at the steakhouse. 1 drink there and the text was received. I have never felt so belittled in my life than when this "man" yelled at my friend in front of the whole entire bar, just to remind him a second time for the check. The way he spoke to her in front of customers was just wrong. I never leave yelp reviews but I was so troubled by this encounter I haven't stopped thinking about it since. At first, I thought he was just having a bad day but when I saw this other review directed towards him, I now guess he is just having a terrible life/year. Went here with some friends on a Wednesday night. It's a cool spot with a restaurant on one side and a bar with apps and drinks only on the other. The restaurant was crowded and had a 45-minute wait, so we sat outside on the bar side until our table was ready. We shared the hush puppies, black-eyed pea hummus, boudin balls, and pimiento cheese. All of it was good, but the hummus was my favorite! It was better than expected, and I could've eaten the whole plate. We also had some drinks - most of us beer, but one of us had the Heart of Darkness cocktail. It was so cool in the smoky glass, and my friend said it tasted good too. Our server, Alex, was personable, efficient, and very attentive. When our table was ready at the restaurant, we went over there. Again, we had fantastic service - I wish I could remember our waitress's name. She was knowledgeable about the menu and came by our table at the right time. Unfortunately, I didn't care for my main dish. I got the pulled pork mac and cheese, but it was not at all like I was expecting. The pork was tough, there was too much sauce relative to noodles, and the sauce tasted strangely sweet on top of being very spicy. I can't describe it, but I would definitely not eat this again. I would recommend staying on the bar side and enjoying the great drinks, apps, and atmosphere. I would come back if I'm ever in Columbia again. read more

First of all, service is amazing! Everything comes out so quickly. Presentation is on point!! The slushies are sooooo refreshing and delish! Perfect for these hot summer days in the south. We had the frozen blueberry and peach mint julep and both were out of this world. The biscuit of champions was hella filling and oh so flavorful! The piece DE resistance is their Yaya Hurricane which you can only order 2 of. It's strong enough to carry you to your car. But you should not be driving after having one of these!! It packs Rye, peach whiskey, and passion fruit, peach, and pomegranate juice (help antioxidants!). We live in Charlotte, but we will definitely be back!! read more

Every time I have been to bourbon has been a great experience. However, this time takes the cake. Saturday night wait time at around 6:15 was 1 hour to an hour and 15 minutes..expected on a Saturday night. We ended up going over to the bar side for an app and cocktail where we were promptly seated. My drink didn't arrive right away due to a mishap and we were compensated for our app and the cocktail. Honestly, things happen, that was not the expectation at all. Kat, our server, was great, and truly went above and beyond to make it right. Once we got over to the dinner side, we were sat at the bar. I normally do not like sitting at the bar as it is more impersonal than a table or booth. However, you get a great show watching talented bartenders prepare exquisite cocktails. My drink, the hurricane, was perfection. Strong, yet perfectly sweet. The boudin balls were amazing as was the shrimp and grits. Some of the best shrimp and grits I've had! Overall, 5 stars for the service, the ambience, and the food. I've been back to Bourbon a dozen times now and for good reason... The grilled bistro steak with fingerling potatoes and collard greens? I may have died and gone to heaven. The steak was cooked to perfection and yes, it is topped with pimento cheese which is totally the right thing to do. I've never had it that way before which is a damn shame because it was delicious. Also, the Ya Ya hurricane now might be my favorite drink in Columbia. There's a limit of two (because of the ingredients they have to prepare in advance for the drink) but don't worry... you won't need more than that. I'm great with one. They are delicious and pack a punch so be careful! Bourbon is also open pretty late for a Main Street biz. It seems a popular spot for other restaurant service folk to pop by for an after shift drink. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a good place for a night cap. read more

The good: freshly renovated interior with a youthful feel to it. Combines wooden textures with a Southern style that's charming. We had the option of sitting at a community table, bar or booth, so I'd imagine the atmosphere lends itself to socializing easily, if you're in the mood. The BBQ shrimp appetizer had a tangy flavor that was unlike anything I've ever had but it was quite good. Duck was also a good dish, as was the lemon strawberry tart for dessert. Menu changes about every two weeks. The not so good: quail was tender but not that flavorful for being stuffed with cornbread. The Martinez drink was too stout for my liking. Service was friendly but slightly spacey and a few of the servers didn't seem to get along which made things awkward. This is an upscale restaurant & bar. It is crowded in the evenings, even during weekdays. The restaurant is relatively small. There were only about 6 booths, 2 long tables, and maybe 15-20 seats at the bar. Unfortunately, We had a 30 minute wait for a booth. While waiting, I tried the Woody Wilcox beer and also the famous hurricane. Both were excellent choices. The food was also full of flavor. It had many favors. It was amazing. They were out of the $12 scallops and the $22 drum entrees. Consequently, I ordered the burger with a few appetizers and a side. All wonderful. The service was top notch also. Our server was attentive, friendly, and offered great recommendations. I would love to go back. if you are not going for dinner, inquire about their specials. The owners were really kind to invite us back to give them another try, so we took up the offer. And I'm glad we did. I got the steak and eggs this time and it was really good. The steak was nice and tender and the eggs were cooked and seasoned well. I exchanged the grits for the tater tots and they were good like last time, being nice and crunchy. My date got the crab cakes, and wow, they were really good. It came with grits and corn on top and that combo worked really well together. The grits were nice and creamy and the corn gave it a little sweetness. I'm glad I decided to give this spot another try and would come back for those crab cakes. read more

I was here for dinner on a Friday night and while it was a full house we got seated within 5 minutes. I want to tell you first what I would not order again because the I want last plate I review to be what you most remember about this review. Would not get the pimento shells or the beignets. The beignets were lacking and maybe it was my fault for expecting cafe du monde-ish and setting the bar high. They were good but I expected something else. We started with the sweet and sour hush puppies, they were delicious! You get 5 good size puppies and I would totally get them again. We also got the bayou burger with pimento cheese, it was seasoned and cooked perfectly and how I had asked for. Great burger for $7!!!!! Rumor has it you can come in during lunch somedays and get it for $10 and it come with a beer and a shot! THAT is having it your way!! The absolutely most delicious thing we had that night was the quail. I just cannot properly describe the perfect chemistry of the purée, cherries, potatoes, and brussel sprouts that the two perfectly cook quails sit on!
