Truth be told, I doubt I would've driven from Downtown Pittsburgh to the Laurel Highlands just to…read moresee this house even though it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright toward the end of his life. Like most dilettante tourists, I came here because it's a scenic ten-minute drive from Fallingwater, Wright's unequivocal masterwork (review: https://yelp.to/dm_1LqdsKL). Did I regret making the detour? Absolutely not, Kentuck Knob definitely has its own merits. Built in 1956 for local ice cream tycoon I.N. Hagan and his wife Bernadine, this angular Usonian home sits on a hill that provides the structure its name. The Hagans were friends of the Kaufmanns, the owners of Fallingwater, and they were so impressed, they hired Wright to design their main house. Similar to Fallingwater, this house was integrated with the surrounding nature. It was built to look like an extension of the hill rather than residing on top of it. Unfortunately, photography was forbidden inside the house as the family still keeps their personal effects here. There were no right angles in the design. The dining room table has a trapezoid shape that could be separated into two parts. The kitchen reflects an irregular hexagonal shape with a large, matching skylight. The bedrooms are similarly angular, and in true Wright fashion, the hallways are very narrow with little room to breathe much less walk. A short walk away from the house provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Youghiogheny River gorge (Video). There's a shuttle between the house and the visitors center, which houses a gift shop and a cafe. Alternatively, I took the brief hike down the hillside because there were public art pieces to peruse along the way, including a piece of the Berlin Wall (Photo 7). It's worth knowing that Wright visited the site only once and never saw the finished house. RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh? Though it was pouring the day of our tour, I never felt like Luann was rushing through, even as we stood outside with umbrellas to see some of the details. My husband had so many questions and she was armed with an answer for every one, even knowing the history of the unique furniture pieces inside. You could tell she had a genuine interest in the house and was happy to share what she knew. The weather kept us from taking the woodland path back to the visitor center but I am excited to go back and walk the grounds.

Tonight we are here for Jazz in your Face, and none of their dinner offerings are gluten free. When I asked if the chicken, at least, could be modified, the gal at the bar said no. But! She went and talked with someone, and they soon found me at my table and asked if I would like an herbed chicken cutlet with vegetables. It was so kind of them to go out of their way to make sure I had something to eat. Everything was scrumptious, and everyone was so nice! I learned that the lady was new - so she didn't know when I asked. But, she took the time to find out. I'm just one little person, but that is excellent customer service, and I appreciate it very much!

Decent size on the inside that allows for a variety of events to be held within. Decorations make the space look elegant. The dancefloor is a decent size. The bar area is capable of serving a multitude of drinks. The food was on point. Now, let's get into the nitty gritty of this place. Parking is atrocious. Yes, there is a parking lot adjacent to the building and some on street parking. Be mindful of the residents in the area, there are driveways that could be blocked. But also be mindful that Ace's management don't care if the parking lot for Ace's is being filled with vehicles that have an intention to go elsewhere in the neighborhood. If you bring this to their attention, the owner will tell you that they all work together in the neighborhood and that it's not a problem. Translation: not my problem, too bad your guests didn't show up earlier even though we were not open. The bathrooms inside are so small and cramped that you could and can get hit by the stall doors when you are using a urinal. Reminds you of a very old firehall. Or maybe a church hall with no windows. Guests were well behaved during the event. Mindful of the neighborhood. But the owner of the business makes assumptions that the guests "damaged" a planter outside by shoving a glass beer bottle into it, and took to their own personal Facebook page to blast the "wedding guests." Funny thing is, the bar area did not serve beer in bottles and alcohol outside is prohibited. But let's make assumptions to cover our insecurities. Since I seem to be focusing on management/owner here, let's go a little deeper. Be mindful of the card box if you have one for a wedding. I mean it was nice that they secured the box part way through the wedding, but did not let anyone know they did so. Then when you want to retrieve the card box the next day it is like pulling teeth. Or maybe the owner is keeping it as ransom for something. When attempting to reach the owner to set up a way to secure the box you get chastised that he does not read texts while he is out conducting business via the catering business. If that's how you run a business, let someone else do it. You are allowing your personality to shine through and it is not appealing to attract business. Also, be mindful that you are basically in charge of setup and clean up of your own event. And god forbid if you have multiple things going on that would make for multiple trips here. Yes, you did read that correctly, you are responsible for cleaning up after yourself directly after your event. Such a good practice for an event space. Also, keep receipts from this place. Write a check, keep the ledger updated. Receive an email, keep it. If you do happen to get a receipt, keep it. Also, make sure that you schedule around the owner's time as he doesn't seem to understand how life works and that people have jobs. Remember, keep those receipts because once you have paid off the fee, they will attempt to say you are short without proof, so save your proof. If you have a crap attitude and run your business short of a scam, maybe running a catering/event business is not for you. Or maybe you should take a course in personal relations and learn to at least be fake a smile and keep it to yourself like everyone else in the world has at your age.

It's way out there, if you're not from the area & your GPS will take you on a scenic winding road, country detour which is OK in daylight but a nightmare in the pitch dark on the way home. This review is based solely on the clubhouse bar/restaurant, not on the golf course itself. The building is non-descript on the outside, but fairly nice inside with a large bar, dining area, middle room with pool table & back banquet room that looks like a regular basic wedding reception room (essentially what I imagine it's used for)...which is where the band played. There is no actual stage. It was quite busy on a Friday night and the two bartenders were slightly overwhelmed and doing their best to take care of the customers. They actually have a pretty big menu with lots of choices, and I had the fish and chips which was good-a very large piece of fried fish. The Miller Lite on draft was cheap at three dollars a pint. The band had a decent crowd in the back room, mostly older folks, so it was a little strange like playing to an old people's wedding reception, but it worked out & was fun. They look like they have a nice patio attached to the restaurant that overlooks the golf course that will be nice once the weather warms up. If my friends play here again I would stop by but not living in the area doubtful that I will be back until then. Having said that if you live in the area definitely worth a looksee and looks like a decent place to eat or sit at the bar. They have a one of the largest screen TV's I've seen in a bar. The bartenders were friendly despite how busy they were.
