Last year, I needed something dressy for a global sales meeting gala event. With Arlene's help, I found a gorgeous and uniquely-styled dress by Joseph Ribkoff, a Canadian designer whose collections I had previously only seen in a boutique in the Rideau Centre in Ottawa. This year's favorite find is another Joseph Ribkoff design: a short black skirt embellished with silver rivets for a really fun and funky effect, dressed up or down. My size was out of stock through the store, so Arlene graciously special ordered it for me. On another trip to Shirley's, I eyed a faux leather jacket, but wasn't sure of the cut; Arlene explained why the cut was wrong for me and suggested a similar jacket that was more becoming. Talk about top-quality service! I really like the designers Arlene brings in, especially Brighton and Z Supply, but the customer service is what really impresses me and keeps me coming back for more.

Their jewelry is a little more expensive than some other retailers, but they're of good quality and will last you a very long time. I love their array of home decor. I bought some paintings and assorted knick-knacks there years and years ago and they are still on display at my house because they're unique, still look as good as new, and receive a lot of compliments from guests. In my opinion, their bath and bedding section is top-notch and high-quality. My warm, fuzzy blanket I purchased from them eons ago is still in excellent shape and has only gotten softer and more comfortable over the years. The same goes for my comforter and sheet sets. You may pay a little more, but these products will last for years to come. I don't know if I'm the only one who has a bizarre graphic tee obsession, but on the off-chance you're like me, Kohl's will not disappoint. Their tees are one-of-a-kind and can't be found anywhere else. I just wish they had more of a selection. Overall, their entire clothing department is impressive and sometimes you can stumble upon some really good deals. She found two: a Permanent Waves one and one for Roll the Bones. Neither of them fit. But she tried. She damn near cleared off the shelves for me all while quoting the film "I Love You Man", which I haven't seen. However, I did not walk out empty-handed. Aside from a movie recommendation, I also got the latest CD's from Bullet For My Valentine and Black Label Society. The ladyfriend, also metal as hell, got a black top, with pink lace trim and a skull on the front. I would have given this place a 3, but the bitchin' customer service and effort put forth by Lauren pushes it to a 4. Easy. And she didn't even freak when the alarm went off because something didn't scan properly. Dontcha hate that? She advised us to "bolt" whenever it happens again. Give Lauren a raise, Hot Topic Inc. NOW! I predict that she becomes CEO in a decade.

I went here for a shoe repair. Not only was the repair botched with very poor craftsmanship (chunks…read moremissing from the footbed, glue everywhere, shoe polish sloppily thrown onto the shoe - including on top of the buckle, but not underneath), but also the shoes were "fixed" without permission when I went to pick them up a second time. The leather and cork were SANDED down unevenly, scratched, and actually ripped in an attempt to hastily try to repair the first terrible repair job. I was then screamed at and told I was a "perfectionist who will never be happy" when I expressed disappointment in the poor repair. I was the only customer in store and had three adult employees screaming in my face who I had to ask twice to please stop yelling. Never once received an understanding or apologetic tone from the manager. Instead she actually laughed when I said I wanted my shoes fixed correctly or replaced. I was also told I was trying to "con them" for wanting a job well done. Extremely unprofessional, unfriendly, and frankly unskilled staff. I didn't expect my shoes to look brand new again but I did expect and SHOULD expect for them to be repaired well. Shop small. Shop local. But do not shop here.
