Bosco Lounge is actually the restaurant/bar under a new hotel at the bottom of St Marks Hill and hasn't been open too long.
I've been to Bosco before for after work drinks and it makes a welcome change to the pub scene, (which I do love but variety is the spice of life and all that), it's a little bit swanky but still relaxed enough to turn up in jeans and not feel too out of place. The staff are always friendly and dress a little off beat, a bit of a contrast to the decor. There's a courtyard as well with heaters for all you dirty smokers.
We went to Bosco last weekend with another couple for a birthday dinner. We arrived at around 8 and although it was quite quiet and there were a few staff floating around, we had to stand by the door for a while staring piteously at the live lobsters in the tank before boy 1 went off to find a waiter. We were seated straight away and our waiter was very friendly, very professional and a little bit funny. He brought some bread over which was really good, a few pieces of crusty white and a few small slices of nutty brown.
The menu is quite limited but still offers enough variety to feel like you have a choice about what you are eating, which is important to me as I don't eat red meat (includes pork) or eggs.
Our starters consisted of freshly shucked oysters, breadcrumbed NZ mussels with garlic butter and lemon and a fillet of haddock. Everyone was pleased with what they got - no food envy!
For the mains the girls got free range chicken breast on pesto mash with an aubergine pate type thing on top.this made the meal - it was smokey and delicious. There may have been some spinach involved somewhere but I was all about the aubergine..
Boy 1 got the rump steak and boy 2 got the pork loin. Neither of them were over satisfied with their choices, meat just not really up to par and nothing exciting about it.
We got 2 bottles of nice red wine, reasonably priced at around £15 per bottle.
The service tapered off towards the end of the meal, leaving us sitting for a good 20 minutes waiting for someone to come over so we could pay them. Fortunately (or not, depending on how you look at it) a guy doing card tricks (random) appeared at our table and entertained me for a few minutes.
He ended up pulling my card out of his mouth folded up and if I take it back tonight I get a free drink.
Our total meal came to just under £120 with service added automatically, so at £30 a head and with two bottles of wine I don't really think you can complain too much.
Bosco is warm, cosy and not at all like a pub and I'm off there tonight to claim my free drink and release the lobsters, so it can't be all that bad... read more
