My expectation was that I'd make a quick visit (on my list for ages), leave with a few interesting bottles of wine and be very happy to drink them at home with friends over dinner. And my expectations were FAR surpassed. WHOA, this place is excellent! I had about 20 minutes so I grabbed my pup for a walk with PV as my destination. The moment I walked in the door Luca (owner) popped up from the office all smiles (and smartly dressed in a gorgeous pink jumper!), greeted me (and my dog!) warmly and asked me what he could help with. I had vague instructions from my husband for a "mineraly" white, a "floral" white and then some bottles of red. I shared this information with Luca -- and he went to work. I could almost hear the gears turning in his brain as he readied the recommendations! He asked me price point (most bottles fall in the £15-30 range), and then began selecting some the thought would be good choices. Not only did he select them, but gave me an entire backstory on each one, the process in which they were made, the region of Italy, right down to the idiosyncrasies of the winemaker. I had no idea I'd be getting such a robust education, my only regret is that I didn't have more time to be regaled with the history of each! I settled on 5 bottles to bring back, and they were carefully wrapped in paper and placed in very nice canvas totes. This smart operation also does wine tastings and small plates (by reservation only) in their secret basement. Luca gave me the full tour, and of course -- that's the next on my list for the next time I have a smallish group to entertain. I can only imagine what a treat it would be. This is quite a small shop and once or twice I've been looking for a wine reviewed as being stocked at Threshers, only to find that this store don't stock it. However, this has been the exception rather than the norm. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and are always willing to make suggestions if you're looking for something new to try. Wine Rack's 3 for 2 offer is excellent and can make reasonably expensive wines quite good value. Now and then they run 40% reduction offers and only just recently, held a wine fair in Harpenden Town Halls, which was a free wine tasting plus 40% off any wines bought, with proceeds going to charity. One of my favourite wines that they stock is an Italian red, Arietto Ripasso Valipocella. Yum!

Alright, everything but the wine, really. So glad to see a shop like this hasn't taken being wine-centric as key to success. The beer selection has about tripled between when I first visited in December and when I popped in during a shop at Broadway Saturday market in February. The Wild Beer Co. they carry have been delicious so far as well as the Kernel and Chocolate Beers. There are also a few taps to try from there in the shop. The place itself is pleasantly arranged for browsing of the selection and feels nicely designed around the central table. Beer on the right, wine on the left. Great location right on Broadway Market, across from a fine drinking establishment (The Dove) and close to Bethnal Green. Staff have been absolutely friendly and happy to chat on both of my visits. A little birdie told me that in addition to their Wednesday wine tastings, there should be beer tastings some time in the future. Noble, I hope so!

The beer on tap that they allow you to taste and then buy for 3£ in half litre bottles is not something I have seen in this kind of establishment before. Really really good and luckily they had a tasty beer like Siren White Tips available for us to take home. It was delicious. That is not all as they have a small selection of bottled beer to choose from too, although it is a range that will be extremely familiar to you if you spend half as much time perusing London beer shops as I do.
