Essentially, I went in to get a cheeky chocolate bar after my lunch and I had to stop for a moment and regain my bearings. It's so clean! It's the cleanest, tidiest, most pleasantly merchandised off license I've ever been in. The coolers with drinks were enclosed behind clean glass, the crisps were aligned and neat on the back wall, the chocolate bars were fully stocked and almost glistened. Some of the walls were painted with accents of red, there were no scuffs on the white walls or the floors. No bottles or food items had that depressing film of dust and illegible use-by dates. Nothing over-priced that I could see. The atmosphere gave me a comfort that I've never known in a corner shop. The two gents working were as friendly as an average off license attendant but the cleanliness of the shop elicited my appreciation, and admiration for their efforts...well done chaps! I won't go out of my way to come here, as you're always ever a few feet away from one, but they've raised the bar and have ruined me for other shops!

Oddly, 4 and 5 are more elusive. Fortunately, by accomplishing 6, my frustrations about 4 and 5 are much easier to bear. Though this offie doesn't have a spectacular selection, it's pretty damn good for being around the block from my flat. You can find some more obscure items like Luxardo here, but nothing like Chartreuse or crème de violette. Still, essentials seem reasonably priced, and the employees are friendly and generous - kicking in an extra lime cordial at no extra charge on top of the half-dozen bottles I purchased. Without doubt, I'll be around.

A huge organic selection. A whole shelf of tea. Racks of dried fruits (I am not addicted to dried figs), nuts (cashews!) and I even found jars of sunflower butter here...which is surprisingly good and a good alternative to peanut butter (which they also have). Fantastic ethnic cooking section chock full of sauces, ingredients, grains, rices, beans and any element you probably need, spices, decent bakery with breads, rolls, pitas, etc. Eggs and dairy, beer, wine, a lot of coconut water, and a fresh produce section (outside) which is standard, but nice to have. Things you won't find: fresh meats or fish. Par for the course! The family that runs it is very friendly as well (always so polite!) and I always leave feeling quite good about supporting a local food shop that is not only convenient, but tucked away from the madness of the Old Street roundabout. Owners deceive and lie. The shop is a listed EVRI shop and they pocket an EVRI fee and pretend to…read morebe an EVRI shop but they regularly refuse EVRI parcels to any customers dropping off. I am aware as I live nearby and have seen this happen over many months. They lie and say machine isn't working (even when it does as I've used the machine). They tell parcel owners to go elsewhere to drop off packages as they refuse to accept. They likely pocket a monthly fee for pretending to accept EVRI packages, so this is fraudulent behavior.

But there is more to this shop than it's handy location (near Chinatown on Shaftesbury Avenue). Check-out their window displays...this is pop-tart central! For a tiny shop, Crispins has a ridiculously large selection of treats imported from the US (pop-tarts, brownie mixes, pancake mixes, runts, mini reese's peanut butter cups and yes Brach's candy corn). Candy corn is not so easy to come by in London, so the fact that they have some and at a semi-reasonable price ( £1.99/bag), this shop is clearly 4 stars in my book.

This shop is for tourists and hungry office workers alike!…read more 90% of the time I enter this shop is for the freshly baked croissants (59p or 3 for £1.) They are cheaper, fresher and tastier than tescos around the corner. If they don't have any, ask, and they'll grab them out of the oven for you. They also sell fruit, ice-cream, teas, drinks, snacks and everything you would expect from a convenience store...along with some London tourist-y bits and bobs. It's not über expensive, or particularly cheap, but it IS good for croissants.
