I had a really fun time taking a recent Cardio Hip-Hop class. The check-in process was easy. I asked the person at the counter if they took any classes there and they did. The check-in person was super welcoming and told me about some of the other dance formats offered there. This dance studio caters to both children and adults. So you will see kids running around, which is ok, but I am not really used to. The class started on time. The instructor had great energy and encouraged us to have fun and do things our own style. I haven't been dancing in a while, so I knew it would be a good challenge for me. I really had a lot of fun. My only surprise is that the classes are only 60 mins. I think they ought to be 70 minutes to include a proper 5 min warm-up and 5-minute cool-down. There wasn't a lot of warming up in the beginning of this particular class. I've taken adult dance classes for years and I am used to something that include some warm-up movements to get the rotating joints going, like neck rolls, shoulder rolls, and hip and lower back movements. The class did include a relaxing cool down with stretching for the lower body and upper body. I plan to take more Hip-Hop style classes. They offer Cardio Hip-Hop, Beginner Hip-Hip and more advanced levels, Sensual Dance, Twerk, Ballet, Shuffle, Street Jazz and a lot more. I was told "It's called the wish room - so we're here to make your dreams come true". Born2Dance helped my dream of hosting a Latin birthday/engagement party come true. In looking for a unique indoor activity, a dance studio seemed like a good fit. Coordinating logistics and booking with the team was a seamless process. They were super responsive and their professionalism made the entire planning phase stress-free. They went above and beyond to get things set up. Most of the coordination happened over text and phone calls. We did a Latin dance class with David, where he showed us a line dance. My group was absolute beginners who were a little nervous to dance in front of each other - David made everyone feel comfortable and have fun with the choreography. By the end of class, everyone looked much more confident on the dance floor. We used the Wish Room before and after the class for food, drinks, and games. This is a great studio with two locations, Vienna and Arlington. Both have easy parking. I've taken both salsa, bachata and zouk with instructor Chesco Leveratto and they are fantastic. Chesco sequences classes so well. The classes build on each other and it's never too much material for one class. He provides video recaps after each class which is super helpful and allows you to practice. Beyond being a good studio, this is a great dance community. After the group classes are over, Chesco arranges group social outings to practice your skills. I recommend taking two classes back to back (7:45 and 8:45) so you can have a whole night of dance. read more

Shahana really knows how to motivate and encourage her students. She challenges me to push a little harder than I think I could. On the days, I am not feeling 100% due to some previous injuries she demonstrates modified version. Though, I often look like a limping dog dancing I love every minute I spend taking Shahana's class. Shahana makes the class so much fun and it is totally a No Judgement Class. She gets me moving regardless how I am feeling that day. It is during those moments taking Shahana's classes I feel the most relax because of her energy and positivity. Highly recommend! I came to Born 2 Dance as an adult after 10 years away from ballet, and it was the best decision. My second review is for Marquise Hughes's Sensual Dance Heels INTRO class. I took two classes of his last year and I'm still having flashbacks about the terrible experience. As an extremely shy and anxious person, I've never done any type of sensual dancing before and I am a complete beginner. The first class I took of his went fine. The choreography was a bit hard, but I got through it. The second class didn't go so well.. during this class there was a moment where he put us into pairs and we had to perform a choreography. As I was doing the choreography with another girl, I had a complete mind blank and forgot the choreography. So I'm just standing there dumbfounded and I laughed and just went to the back of the line. After everyone was done, this man got so upset and screamed that we should never give up and we're wasting not only his time but ours as well if we don't take this seriously and try our best. His little speech went on for a bit. Now he is obviously talking about me, but other girls are raising their hands, and giving an excuse as to why they're messing up. I almost raise my hand, but then I stopped myself because why are we giving excuses in an INTRODUCTION class? Why did we feel like we need to prove to him that we want to do this? People make mistakes ALL the time and obviously I'm here so I want to do this. I simply am human (and a complete beginner mind you) and forgot the choreography. I am not a skilled dancer practicing for a big, important performance. Clearly he was having a bad day, but this really threw me off. I am so grateful this negative experience didn't stop me from trying a different heels choreographer. After gathering up the courage, I tried the intro heels class at the Dance Place in DC and the choreographer was SOOO nice. The energy was amazing too. I said all this to say... don't let a negative dance experience stop you from trying it again somewhere else. If you could give 0 stars i would. The management and front desk stuff are absolutely unprofessional, clueless and irresponsible. I called to inquire about the class they had on their website, the person who answered my call gave me all the info and instructions on how to make a reservation. I made a reservation online and paid for it. Received confirmation email with date and time. On the day of the class I arrived to the studio and found out that the class was moved couple weeks ago and there no class today, and the website just wasn't update. To my questions on why the person i spoke with didn't let me know about or why no one called me to let me know that there no class when they see my reservation, they had no answer. I was beyond disappointed as i made all the plans around this class. They gave me an owner's email to address my concerns. Well, owner never responded to my email. A week later I decided to give it a second try. I check the website again and saw an updated schedule with the class on Thursday at 8.45. Same day i called the studio to reconfirm that there be a class. I briefly told them the story that happened last week and said that i dont want it to happen again. She put me on hold , and after couple minutes came back saying that there definitely a class today. Guess what? When i arrived to the studio, NO CLASS!!!!! Like what????? I was told that the instructor is recovering after the surgery. Then why i was told when called couple hours ago that the class still scheduled , why this class is on the updated schedule online? I am beyond dissatisfied. I arranged my evening to be able to come here, drove 45 min one way. Would not recommend this place unless you know instructors in person and can verify class availability through them, as the stuff has no idea what are they doing. read more

Brought our 5 year old son for a drop-in hip hop session. The instructor could not have been more bad. He cared less for my son who was a new student and obviously was a little lost because it was his first class. None of the other kids in his class were following his instructions. I've been taking adult classes here for about a year and have had some really good experiences. I've mostly done beginner ballet, and I've dropped in on kpop and barre classes. Whether you will like the class on any given day really depends on what you're looking for and who the instructor is - some of them are more "do something to get moving and have fun" and some of them are more "let's focus on a technical foundation and have fun." In both types, the atmosphere is very positive and welcoming. Just know that you might have to shop around between teachers if you're looking for a specific approach. They are neither sticklers about attire nor biased about gender for any class, which I appreciate. Clean facilities, reasonable prices, and if you've signed up for a pass but miss a session, you can make it up in any other class (of the same length or shorter) in the same season. read more

Such a wonderful dance studio! We took our five year old daughter to a drop-in Hip Hop & Creative Dance class to see if she would like it before we committed to a full sign up. Miss Ivana Jane is a fantastic instructor and so sweet and energetic with the Mini's (5-6 year old age range). There was a wonderful balance of dancing, stretches, water breaks, freeze dance off, duo/group work, and play with the tent! The dance studio is lovely- many different classes going on for all ranges and ages. The staff are professional, kind, and the payment structure is very straightforward and practical. Instructor was atrociously bad for the kids' dance class. He wasn't able to control the kids. It was a free-for-all and the instructor seemed to be the only one dancing in the room. The facilities are definitely decent, and so are the teachers. I'm specifically reviewing for the LivingSocial deal, which it turns out came with a 24-hour advance reservation policy that was not mentioned in the details of the deal, nor on the voucher. Cancellations, once this reservation was made, would count as if you took the class anyway. No leeway on the policy, which perhaps might put off people who are just looking to try out the studio (hence LivingSocial deal). For those without a LivingSocial deal, they have a somewhat complicated fee system which is difficult to find on their web site. (It's under "Classes-Adults" all the way at the bottom of the page. They don't seem to have a "10 classes for X amount" system which would be easier (unless, of course, it's buried in this website in a hard-to-find location). Personally, I feel like this dance studio could be great, but the policies, lack of multi-class passes, and unfortunately strict cancellation code make this place second-rate compared to the D.C.-based dance studios. read more

Rating based on my salsa/bachata classes with David N, Henry Z & Bellydance. The staff is friendly, professional, and always attentive to answering questions. The review below is well... BV style. I have noticed that many Indian (FOB) males who (claim to) dance salsa & bachata are predictably arrogant and pompous in attempt to "exude self confidence." (Showing off to other token Indians like myself since there aren't too many who are into Latin dance)- in other words, their grandiosity comes out in attempt to superficially overcompensate for feelings of inadequacy. They simply don't have manners and can't be polite to save their life (unless of course you are non-Indian, then pull a 180, but disingenuous nonetheless). Typical dynamic of Indian partner dance in salsa: 1. Indian male and Indian woman are in the same space. 2. They notice each other and track the other's every move through peripheral vision while pretending to completely ignore the other. 3. To each other's horror, they are paired up by the teacher and forced to talk. Indian [FOB] male says something rude/arrogant/feels like he nailed it. 4. Indian woman is disgusted by the Indian man's rudeness/disrespectful attitude and tries to avoid the male. 5. Indian [FOB] male, still thinking he's "got this in the bag" tries to ask her name, phone number, street address, and other information he feels like he's entitled to. After all, now that he has said "Hi," and broken the ice with a rude comment, he feels like he OWNS her. 6. Male finds and stalks the woman on Facebook and bombards her with a conversation that was never meant to happen. Gets rejected. Follows up with another rude comment. 7. Indian woman drops the class I danced with one such desi male in an intermediate class- not by choice. I mentioned that I wasn't familiar with the exact routine since I came from a different class, and he cocked his head back and said in the rudest way "So you basically know nothing." I wonder how someone would think this is an effective way to communicate with people, especially a female dance partner. Herein lies the fundamental Indian dynamic- familiarity breeds contempt. I could have told him that despite being in an intermediate class, he still couldn't lead shit and was having trouble doing basic steps. But I decided to just observe and gain the lesson from it instead. Eventually, all was well. Attitude and humility is important in the arts. Geniuses have been brought to their knees for lack of humility. No matter what level of dance of any kind I reach, I remind myself that there is so much more that I don't know and there is an ocean out there to learn, so staying humble means respecting everyone and happily taking a beginner class to brush up on basic skills (as well as dancing with beginners and advanced partners because there is something to learn from everyone). For a man in a partner dance, the first step is asking a woman to dance with him. That takes kindness and humility. No woman in her right mind would want to dance with an arrogant asshole, no matter how advanced or great he is. The higher we go, the more important it is to walk in humility instead of pumping up our own ego. This leads me to why I like taking David Norton's classes at Born 2 Dance (Vienna, VA). Despite being a professional dancer, he is incredibly humble and kind to everyone so everyone of all ages wants to dance with him. More than learning dance steps or routines, we can observe such teachers and learn even more valuable life lessons from them. Henry Zelaya is another salsa/bachata instructor who takes a lot of care with his students and despite his intense swag, he is still very respectful to female partners and teaches it in his class. In a partner dance, connection is important, so empathy for the other person and their skill level comes in handy when trying to communicate nonverbally. When you lack both empathy and humility, you can be "professional" level, but not be able to lead even a beginner since you're so stuck in your own head and don't care about moving together, and only focused on showing off. I've heard it said in Latin dance to the men, "This dance is not about you, it's about the lady." Maybe David should teach a class called "Salsa Humility." Lesson #1: Self confidence is sexy. The facilities at the Vienna location are really nice. I would say it's the best I've ever seen. The bathrooms were always clean and organized and the rooms themselves are soundproof and spacious. However, the front desk staff are usually young high school girls that are inexperienced in dealing with customers. They can be disoganized and not very helpful for any questions about program information, etc. In addition, the management there can be very rude. There is abs no leeway on the the policy for refunds or transferring classes and if you call to ask about it you will either get the answering servie without a callback or get a rude response from the management . Lastly, not all of the instructors for all of the classes were that great or qualified. So while the Zumba instructors who are usually certified - you will find a range in their ability to teach at a slow pace to their energy, etc. For bellydance, you may have a great teacher or you may end up with someone who is just good at pretending to be a good teacher. Same for the bollywood - you walk away having learned nothing and not having had a workout. I cannot say for the other classes because I have not take them. Initially, I would have given this studio a much higher review especially since the facilities ARE nice BUT after my experience with management regarding their policies- the gentleman was extremely rude, uncaring, and argumentative- I will never recommend this studio to anyone. They are all about the money. I understand the policy is posted but sometimes in life things happen and we cannot always predict whether we can still attend classes in a certain semester or location or both. read more

I am a trained dancer and performer (as a side hobby!). My daughter has been taking lessons from Born 2 Dance for over 2 years (mostly hip hop but also modern, ballet and contemporary). I have taken adult classes (salsa, bachata, belly dancing and Zumba). I give this business 5 stars on all of the following points: Affordability - the classes are well worth the charges and definitely affordable compared to offer classes of similar quality offered in other studios Instructors - the talent of the instructors is AMAZING. Not only are they great dancers themselves, but choreograph well and connect well with the students Costumes - the studio does a great job of selecting costumes that look great for the performances but also are affordable and practical (meaning they can be worn after the performances) Variety of Offerings - this business does a Fall and Spring recital, but also offers a Dance Cup for the winter session which is an amazing event that blends the love of dance with the competition of sport. My daughter always looks forward to this event and the open "dance party" on the gym floor while the judges tally the scores for the teams. In addition, the studio offers instruction in a wide range of dance styles. Summer Camps- My daughter was able to take only 4 weeks of summer camp this past summer because of travel and other conflicts, but wished she could have taken the entire 10 weeks of camps. Management and Friendliness of Staff - the front desk staff is super friendly, always willing to help and answer questions. Rami who manages the studio is also very receptive to questions, discussions and by working with the instructors gives great recommendations for the appropriate classes and most effective development of the dancers. Development Opportunities - the studio can work to develop a dancer at any level. Beginners get a great foundation. More advanced dancers have opportunities to improved by joining dance companies (also very affordable) and cross-training in different dance styles. Communication - as a parent, I'm so grateful that the studio communicates well. Since I am overwhelmed by emails in general, I appreciate that the studio publishes a website for each performance where I can go (on my own time) to get updates on everything related to the performance, including ticket purchases, costumes, event times and logistics, etc. Professionalism of Recitals and Dance Cup - B2D has mastered the execution of dress rehearsal and the recitals and Dance Cups. Born 2 Dance Studios is a wonderful place that offers lessons in a wide range of dance styles, including belly dance, Persian, bollywood, salsa, hip-hop, flamenco, exotic, and more! The classes are offered for both adults and children, and are priced by "semester". They also have a range of unique fusion and technique workshops. I was involved in "Bellyhop", which is the fusion of belly dancing and hip-hop. In addition, they have wonderful recitals semi-annually, where students and instructors perform dances from the workshops and their classes. Azin Mahoozi is the creative director, founder, and dance instructor for belly and persian dance. She is fantastic! Her teaching methods are easy to follow and she is very patient, especially in the beginner classes where initial aptitude can vary widely dependent upon people's previous dance experiences. Their choreography is very unique and original, and they ensure that the best instructors are available - they actually contract with instructors who often times own and run their own dance companies in the DC metro area and are well-renowned in their dance styles. Pricing is very reasonable, and they have innovative workout packages and combo sessions that allow you to customize your classes based on your interests and fitness/enjoyment goals. Although some of the classes do close enrollment after a 3 week entry period in order to ensure that enrolled students can advance and stay on track and at a similar pace, other classes like the belly dance and hip-hop workout classes are available on a drop-in basis for $20, so it is even convenient for the busy individual who cannot attend classes consistently. In addition, the studio is very considerate about your time and understands that although we don't want it to be, our dance classes/fitness can sometimes end up at the bottom of the to-do list. So, they have a very fair and reasonable make-up policy. If you miss a class, you can make it up - taking a class at the same or lower level than yours- or you can use the missed class as a free pass to any other drop-in class, like one of the workout classes mentioned above. I love this studio. I took a class here after college (bellydance and hip hop fusion) but then moved out of the area and didn't have the time to drive over. I'm back, and I still love it! Valerie, the front desk-er (who is also a dancer herself) is really helpful and always answers my questions. I've never had issues with any of the people at the front desk, as some others have had per the other reviews. I agree that Morgan was a great instructor, but she left before I came back to the studio. Last semester, I took classes with Arina (bellydance), Katie (hip hop), and Natalya (Zumba). I've bellydanced since college, but have more recently developed a love for hip hop, which I will be continuing. Arina is a wonderful instructor, always on time, answering questions, and offering constructive criticism and feedback when it's needed - plus, her choreography is gorgeous. Natalya's Zumba class is REALLY fun. It was my first Zumba class, and there were lots of people there - lots of energy and smiling...and drinking water because it's definitely a workout. She has pauses between most of her songs, which is GREAT because I can catch my breath. Katie (Anderson), like I mentioned above, was my beginner hip hop instructor last semester, and I adored her, so I took her hip hop fitness class. BOY OH BOY, Katie's fitness class is no joke. It isn't just dancing/cardio, and she incorporates ab work, leg work, and arm work (it's very similar to High-Intensity Interval Training/HIIT I think) - man, does it work you out!! I liked that class a lot, and I'll be taking it this coming semester as well. I'll also be taking another hip hop class with her. With hip hop, I'm going to stick to Katie. While her choreography classes aren't always very structured, I appreciate that, because I enjoy experimenting with a certain part of a song and determining which moves go best with that part. Plus, she's a ball of fun, and is one of the most encouraging, non-judgmental, drama-free people I have ever met in my entire life. That's what I look for in an instructor, so finding her was like striking gold for me. I always came back from her classes energized, feeling good, and thinking very positive (weird, right??). I have been taking classes through this studio on and off since early 2011 and have not encountered the issues described by previous reviewers, but then I have not had to deal with the front desk staff that much. In particular, I have enjoyed all of the belly dance classes I have taken with Azin, the studio's founder. I had taken belly dance classes from instructors in a number of different studios (in addition to watching instructional DVDs) prior to coming to Born 2 Dance and Azin was the first instructor to truly impress me with her ability to easily convey HOW to correctly execute a move as opposed to just watching her do something and trying to emulate it, as had been my experience with other instructors. She breaks things down to easily understandable steps even if your muscles are not up to the task yet. On a couple of occasions I did do drop-ins with another instructor, Arina, and was not as impressed because her teaching style differed from Azin's, but overall I have been extremely happy with the belly dance classes, and the students from Arina's regular class seemed happy enough with her teaching. I would also disagree that the studio is "all about the money" per the 10/17/2011 review, and if anything, I have found them extremely accomodating in ways that other dance studios I have attended had not been. If you are uncertain about a class, I recommend taking advantage of their drop-in option. It's not difficult to understand how they price the classes if you decide after a couple of drop-ins that you want to sign up for the rest of the classes. The classes are prorated, which means that you only pay for the classes you take after signing up on a certain date. If, for example, you miss the first two classes and sign up to take classes for the remainder of the session beginning with the third class, you will pay a lower rate (or, as taken directly from their website, "Prorated Fees reflect the number of weeks left in the session ($15 x Number of weeks)"). I have taken a variety of classes at this studio. The Zumba instructors are really great and each is different with their style of teaching so it is best to drop in on different instructors if you can. I like the variety of classes and the ability to take a different style if you like so if you sign up for Zumba and decide it's not for you, you can take hip hop cardio or bollywood. I also like that you can buy a fitness pack of 10 classes (or 20, 30, 40) and just go to whatever classes you want. A word of caution, as the other reviewers have said, you have to use all your classes before the end of the session or you lose them. There is no flexibility on this policy so I would recommend buying the minimum you think you'll use and then purchasing more if you run out. It is more expensive than other places to take classes like Zumba but the facility is nice, the instructors are great and for the most part the clientele are welcoming and friendly. Although he can be abrupt, I have never had an issue with the manager returning my calls or emails when I had questions. read more

I love to dance but am not a trained dancer. Born 2 Dance has tons of classes for adults, and is definitely not pretentious or snooty! I also love that they have a recital every year for kids and adults. I took a Bollywood performance class with a friend and we had a blast. After a yoga-related hiatus, I'm back for hip hop cardio and technique and loving it! Parking is adequate, the studios are nice, teachers are friendly, and I'm getting a good workout while having fun. read more

Yay! I'm glad Born2Dance is on Yelp. I really like this dance studio and if I had lots of time, as well as money (I am a "perpetual ex-student"), I would take tons of classes there. What I like about them: 1) I like the one-stop shopping for dance classes, as opposed to going one place for bellydancing classes, another for flamenco, another for hip hop, etc. In that sense, their format is similar to Joy of Motion (and Joy of Motion is such a pain for me to get to as I am so NoVa-based). 2) the instructors are pretty knowledgeable and friendly, and if you stick with a particular dance form, you might actually befriend some classmates (or at least Facebook friend them). 3) Students, especially adult students, are encouraged to perform in the semi-annual dance recitals. And these dance recitals are pretty fun to watch. I didn't invite anyone to the first one that I was in because I was unfamiliar with the dance studio then and I was afraid that the recital would be embarrassing or boring, but now I will invite people because the instructors perform in-between the student numbers, and some of the students themselves are just really, really good dancers. So, the recitals are just really fun to watch, especially if you love experiencing multiple dance genres from around the world. If I had any criticisms, it would be that I wish the floors were a little more springy. But I've only used one of their dance studios, so I don't know if that's true for all the floors. Otherwise though, I will totally continue taking classes here! read more

I've been taking classes at Born2Dance for a year, and I would disagree with some of the negative comments. There is a 10 lessons for a discounted amount option available, so the person who said that it's not there was completely wrong. There is very flexible make-up policy. If you missed your class, you can take any other class. I am not sure about the cancellation policy - never had to cancel. Once I started, I got addicted. Very nice teachers, and very nice facilities. It's true that sometimes front desk could be swamped and overwhelmed with a lot of people trying to get their attention, but I never noticed them being rude. They always try to help, and I always saw them being very nice. My both kids take dance lessons there, teachers are extremely patient and nice with kids. We are definitely going back. read more

After sending my feedback to the studio, I received a thoughtful response from the Managing Director, Rami Shalan. The studio conducted an investigation into my complaint and even gave me a refund which is contrary to their policy. I am very pleased with their prompt response and immediate action. Rami was very professional and considerate. Gold star for customer service! They are working to correct the problem to avoid this issue in the future. Thank you very much! ---------------- Warning: DO NOT take the Bollywood class with Amruta. I was in my University's Bollywood dance team for 4 years; I was also a dance instructor for All That and Jazz in Dumfries. As someone with a dance and instructor background, I am appalled that Amruta is allowed to teach. She is extremely unprofessional. She makes students uncomfortable, rolling her eyes at them, stating that their questions are dumb, not knowing what comes next, and rewriting choreography. The class is not hard; the moves are basic to anyone who has "6 months of experience," and the routine is probably from YouTube. I looked at her bio and was supposed to be impressed, but after watching her dance and interact with students, it's a disappointment. She is the sole reason this class has any level of difficulty. I understand "hard" instructors- been there, done that. But her level of behavior goes beyond hard into intentionally mean. It's simply uncalled for. Last class, she made the announcement that she is leaving in 2 weeks and we'll have a new teacher. That's information that should have been disclosed before we paid for the class and reflects poorly on the studio. Regardless, I am dropping the class because I hate coming home annoyed when it's supposed to be an outlet. I am aware of the no-refund policy but hey- if that means not seeing her again, then it's worth every penny. read more

Really fun and eclectic dance studio. The instructors are as amazing at teaching as they are about choreography. Plenty of classes for girls, boys and adults. Lots of energy here! Love it! Born2Dance is the best dance studio in NOVA becauset it offers all of the most popular modern dance styles to ADULTS and children. Whatever your level, you'll find something you love.The classes are small and intimate, which is also great. I'm huge fan of hip hop and they offer it everyday of the week which makes it easy to fit it into my schedule! The instructors are knowledgeable and come with extensive resumes.
