New Bop Shop store location in progress.

Great article here @ the Rochester D&C about this much-loved vinyl destination: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20111105/LIVING/111050314/Bop-Shop-losing-its-lease-Village-Gate-Square?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CHome When I *actually* moved to Rochester in 1981, record stores were my salvation. I wound up working @ the Record Archive in '82 and spinning records on 88.5 WRUR FM. It was around that time that the Bop Shop opened. While both stores are current & vital, it looks like the existence of the Bop Shop is being threatened by, of all things, their landlord. I know I'll be going to the Gate House and Dark Horse much less often without Bop Arts events to lead me there. The Village Gate will suffer when it loses the Bop Shop as one of it's anchors.

Rows of records!

So overwhelming, but in a good way! They have everything for the music-minded. It's awesome to see the selection, new and old, CDs and records, used and new. The people who work here are super helpful too. Always ask questions because they are the really informed about what's in the store in general (plus extra stuff in the back/basement, etc.) and also cool bands/albums you may not discover on your own. At home, we have a newly acquired record player and have been popping in here to pick up some new/used records to slowly build up our collection. So far, it's a few random finds like a Bill Cosby comedy act, Simon & Garfunkel, ELO, and a couple Beatles albums. It also won't break the bank -- the used stuff is mostly in good condition. Tom does some cool stuff with the place too, hosting music events on occasion during Record Store Day, great sales, and bringing in quality acts that perform at music venues (like Abilene and Lovin' Cup).

Several albums from the clearance section, $2-$5!

I really enjoyed my visit to this record shop! Before going here, I had never heard of it before. But thanks to a friends suggestion since we recently got a record player, I checked out this hidden gem! We walked in and were greeted with rows and rows of vinyl. There were a few "regular" customers, chatting with the helpful girls behind the counter. After looking through the records in the front with moderate prices, we found the clearance area in the back right corner. We found at least 10 records that we could not leave without, for between $2 to $5 each! Genesis, The Who, James Taylor, the Beatles, The Carpenters... many great artists and the sections are well-labeled and easy to peruse.

Bop Shop Records, the unassuming exterior.

Review Highlights - Bop Shop Records

Record Archive may have a larger selection, but I always spend most of my time (and probably way too much money) at the Bop Shop.

Ah, the soon to be gone FYE (For Your Entertainment)! Brought to you by Trans World Entertainment!…read moreFormerly known as Record Town (and their sister store, Tape World)! Yes, FYE is finally closing their last Rochester area Store... leaving the West Side lacking a store where folks can buy physical media. They're holding a "Going Out of Business" sale right now, with markdowns on CDs and Vinyl LPs for those who actually purchase their music. Confession: back in the 80's I was, for a brief time, assistant manager of the Marketplace Mall Record Town. Big hit then was 12" of "The Show" Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew (feat. Slick Rick). To this day, I can still hear "Six minutes, six minutes, six minutes... Dougie Fresh, you're on". Thank gosh we still have Record Archive, Bop Shop, HiFi Lounge, Needledrop and the great, great House of Guitars. Support local merchants for the win!

Keep in mind, this review is for people looking to do trade-ins. Over the last few years, but…read moreespecially over the last month, this one particular store (Greece location) has added harsh, draconian policies that it won't back down on, that make it possibly the worst place to do trade-ins. Like, worse than Gamestop. First of all, there's a 25 dollar limit per customer per day. You can not get more credit than that. I had an item worth way more than that, and I had to drive out to Buffalo to get it to go through their system. Second of all, you can't do Trade-ins if there are any customers behind you. You will literally have to wait until the line disperses and everyone else has gone through, including people who got in line since you stood aside. And just today, I learned that you can't use store credit to buy gift cards. Yeah. If there's nothing there you want, you can't just buy an amazon card and try your luck there anymore. You just have to keep the store gift card and come back later, which is especially nasty of them if you happen to live a long distance away, and are forced to go to that location for the soul purpose that the Victor and Henrietta locations are both gone. You want to feel like a criminal, without having to face all of the long term consequences? Go do Trade-ins at the Greece FYE.
