We drive past Accent on our way home as we live just a few blocks away and were always curious about what the studio looked like. Natalia, our dance instructor/choreographer was fantastic!! We picked a song and she worked her magic in coming up with some great steps, we as non trained dancers, could learn. She was very encouraging and our dance ended up being much more complex than what we had in mind! 3 lifts and almost 3 full minutes of dancing! Our wedding day was perfect and we'll keep Accent in mind if we ever want to take their group salsa classes.

There are two rooms, which is nice, and one has beautiful wooden flooring, which seems well-maintained and makes for a lovely space. I took a beginner ballet class that was amazing. It's probably the first adult ballet class I've taken where the teacher was not just encouraging, but also seemed to take adult dancers seriously. I felt safe with her corrections and she seemed incredibly knowledgeable about the craft. The students in this class were kinder and more laid back than some of the other studios I've tried out so far, so totally loved the beginner ballet class here because it seems to be community-oriented. I'm only knocking off stars because the studio is HOT, and not in a sexy way. I thought I would collapse from the heat inside that room. It wasn't just hot; it was sticky and humid in there, which is not something I have ever experienced before. There are fans in the studio, but they don't do much to help with cooling down the space. Other dancers were just taking off clothes and walking outside to try to catch their breath. It's pretty remarkable how much hotter it gets inside the studio than even the weather outside, so that made me a little nervous about potentially returning during weeks when the weather is above 80-degrees. It's horrendous. I love Ballet and really enjoyed the class I took, but wish there was a way to cool the place down. Not sure how safe it is to do ballet or any form of physical activity there if you are heat-sensitive, so just be warned about that. It's very much an issue, especially during these months when the weather is 90+. That's a liability waiting to happen.

However, I prefer to sit back and…read morewatch other people perform, so you can only guess the pained expression that I had on my face when my fiancée, who enjoys watching 'Dancing With the Stars,' suggested that we take dance lessons to do a choreographed Viennese waltz for our wedding dance. I'm was thinking, "Why?? It's just one more thing we have to worry about on the big day, no? Can't we just go out on the dance floor and just shift around to a slow song at a jr high school dance like everyone else?" In my nervousness and frustration over the prospect of getting up in front of a large audience of friends and family to put on a dance number, I found myself blaming Walt Disney. You know, all those fairy tale princesses and their ballroom dance scenes; Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and many others indoctrinating young girls all around the world to dream about that Snow White moment when someday their prince comes and they can be the "princess" and glide around the floor just like in the cartoon movies. Don't worry, my rant won't turn into a screed because fortunately for me, my fiancée chose to to seek out Murisa to help get us ready for our number on the big day. Murisa is wonderful instructor. As a novice to dancing/ballroom dancing, I had no idea how to properly move on the dance floor but her instruction helped me to clean up my form and movement by laying things out in terms that I was able to understand. Plus she was patient with us as we were looking for a song that inspired us (we changed songs twice) and changed the dance from a Viennese waltz to a traditional waltz then back to Viennese waltz. All in all we took ten lessons from Murisa. Each lesson is 45 mins and the lessons are held in a facility near Koreatown. The facility has a large dance floor that is shared by many other instructors and dancers of all levels. Murisa's scheduling is flexible, however, her time slots can fill up fast, so if you're in a time crunch to get ready before your wedding day, best do it soon!

We had zero experience prior to this and were nervous, but Murisa made every lesson a lot of fun and we can't thank her enough. However, when contacted, I was immediately steered to the payment website to sign up for multiple lessons. Since I never met Sergio, I asked for an intro lesson and was the told the lesson would be at a private residence and ask to pay the $100 fee via Zelle. I found that to be a bit sketchy so I decided I would pay when we arrived at the lesson. On the day of the lesson, when I tried to confirm the appointment, I was informed that since I did not pay up front, Sergio scheduled another lesson. It's seems this he is more interested in payment than developing a relationship with a new client. That tells me what the lesson would be like.

Let me start by saying this loud and clear: I am not a great dancer. I'm decent--with two left…read morefeet--and I work hard outside of class because, well, I need to. I've even booked private sessions with instructors just to nail down routines. So if that sounds familiar, keep reading--because by the end of this, you might just be signing up for your first class. I've been a proud member of the Groove Zone community for nearly two years now, and honestly, I can't say enough great things about the instructors and the entire program. Yolanda Thomas, the owner and lead instructor, is a force of nature--an incredibly kind, passionate, and inspiring human who truly cares about every single person who steps through the studio doors. Her motto? "If you think you can't dance, I bet ya I can teach ya how to." (Spoiler alert: She can.) Thanks to Groove Zone, I've performed at two South Bay Lakers halftime shows and even hit the floor at a WNBA halftime performance at Crypto Arena--in front of 15,000 people. Yeah... 15,000. Never in my life did I think I'd perform in front of a live audience, let alone an arena crowd. It's the kind of rush you can't describe--and an experience most people never get the chance to have. And the community? Pure gold. The dancers I've met have become friends, cheerleaders, and my biggest supporters. There's zero judgment in the studio--because we're all there for the same reasons: to learn something new, break a sweat, and most importantly--have fun. Big shoutout to another powerhouse instructor: Manuela. She might seem intimidating at first (because let's be real--she's an absolute beast on the dance floor), but she is hilarious, supportive, and knows her stuff inside and out. She pushes you to grow, step outside your comfort zone, and leave class drenched in sweat--but in the best way possible. When it's time to hit the stage, she'll make sure you're 100% performance ready. And if you're not? She'll tell you that too--but with honesty, compassion, and the goal of making sure next time, you'll own that stage. That's how Groove Zone rolls: real talk, real support, real results. Take it from me--don't do what I did. I walked into my first class... got overwhelmed... and walked right back out. It took me a year to return. Don't let your nerves hold you back like that. Instead, challenge yourself. Step outside your comfort zone. Join a community of people who love to dance just as much as you want to. You don't have to be Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears. (I'm definitely not!) You just have to show up, bring your energy, make some new friends, and get one hell of a workout while you're at it. And when the day comes that you see yourself on a Jumbotron at a packed stadium, absolutely killing it in a halftime performance--don't say I didn't warn you about how badass you'd feel.
