A mountain landscape with a partly cloudy sky, dense forested slopes, and rocky peaks in the distance.

Great challenging hike in Vail! You do have to take the bus from the main bus station in Vail as the trailhead for this hike is in a residential area and you cannot park there. The bus is easy, convenient, and quick. The hike starts off moderately but there is a steady climb to the falls where a lot of people will go to and turn back. It was around 2 miles up to the falls. From there we went up to the lake which is a very challenging but beautiful hike. The last bit in the valley and then climbing up to the lake feels very long and this hike ended up being slightly longer than what All Trails says that this hike is 10 miles. Luckily it was cloudy and rainy most of the day and only got hot on our way down. Doing this hike in the heat would be brutal although there are shaded areas. Recommend poles for some of the steeper incline down but maybe not needed if you're just going to the falls. Highly recommend this hike!

This trail is a hidden gem! We did it late August 2021as a emergency pick when our plan to hike at Hanging lake canceled due to mudslide. We didnt get a chance to reach the lake cause of time constraint had already booked iron mountain hot springs to go. Felt like walking through heaven! It drizzled for about half an hour, was so gorgeous.

Views on this hike are WOWZA!! Colorado is beautiful especially in the fall. There's an array of bright yellows throughout the hike. The hike isn't the easiest. I'm a Colorado Native who hikes regularly and climbs 14ers, and I had to stop to catch my breath a couple times (not just from the views). It starts out with a moderate incline and goes from there. It took us about 3 hours round trip, including the 30 minutes we spent at the top by the waterfall taking pictures and eating a snack. The route down is a lot faster, although I have knee problems and it was quite a bit of pressure on my knees.

Very nice trail and even more enjoyable when there is some snow on the ground. If you're lucky, you might see a family of bighorns.

Come back to the west side of the transportation center and look for a "hiker" bus.

This was my Sawatch range finisher and it was a grueling, but rewarding hike. I clocked about 12…read moremiles round trip with over 5K of elevation. The downhill was the hardest! Definitely tough on the joints. Much of the hike was in the dark to begin, so it felt like it took forever to get back since nothing looked familiar. It's a beautiful mountain with no technical skills required despite the elevation and length. I thought the scramble was great fun-harder class 2 but still easy with little exposure. Going through half moon pass is beautiful and offers stunning views of the mountain, but I definitely had an "oh sh*t" moment when I saw how far away it was. I brought my friend with me who did this as her first 14er which is pretty bad ass! I think if you choose this as your first, you could easily do all of the class 1 and 2s without a problem. There is one river crossing and so many pretty flowers when I went. A great challenging hike with beautiful scenery! I'd recommend camping at half moon campground the night before so it's easy to get an early start.

Obviously you can't summit now. It's covered in snow! This is a favorite among Colorado Fourteeners…read morethough. Just had to review. Expect at least 12 miles roundtrip from the closest trailhead. If you start closer to Minturn, it could be a 20. Truly enjoyable with lots of variation and a tight drop off bend as you approach the pinnacle. It has the visuals of where a sherpa would live with their goat. Truly awesome.
