OH DEAR! How can i even begin to catalogue our disappointment? I can but try. Perhaps i should start by observing that if a restaurant is going to have it's kitchen on view then it needs to make sure those working in the kitchen are maintaining a good standard of hygiene. Half my group were facing the kitchen and soon got heartily tired of watching one of the chefs repeatedly wiping his nose on the back of his hand whilst serving food.. Service was incredibly slow and, although this was apologised for (and a complimentary drink given) I don't accept been busy as a valid excuse because a restaurant should have sufficient staff and resources for the number of settings it has. When our food arrived several of the dishes were cold had had to be sent back to be re-heated (not good with pasta). One dish arrived with the wrong sauce and the child's pizza was more poppadom in it's consistency and would have lost out in a fair fight with a supermarket basic pizza. My own chosen meal of Calzone Carne was a disappointment even though it was one of the minority of meals served to us that wasn't suffering from a major fault. Bella Italia is one of those places that add a service charge to the bill but we knew this and deducted the charge. It took them a while to get the bill right as they originally seemed intent on over charging us by approx £50.

There is a restaurant upstairs which has a set menu but is slightly more expensive than the bar meals downstairs. At lunch time there is a carvery which has some really tasty dishes, not just joints of meat but there are home made pie dishes and pork in mushroom sauce and many other dishes to chose from. You can have two courses for £5.99 which may have gone up I haven't been over the last few weeks but the desserts are also delicious. I especially enjoy the plum crumble with custard but there are lots of choices. It is nice to go at lunch time if you have the chance and is very warm and cosy. The waitresses are dressed in complete waitressing outfits and really know what they are talking about when they describe the food. I love it there!

The Chemic Tavern is in the Woodhouse area of Leeds. Woodhouse is not known for it's excellent pubs and neither is neighbouring Hyde Park. They both mainly consist of student pubs with no soul and flat Carlsberg. Not good. The good people at The Chemic Tavern have managed to remove themselves from these other kinds of pubs and have created something bloody lovely. First things first - the beer. They always have a great selection of ales on. Timothy Taylor's Landlord is always there and then usually two or three others. You then have a selection of decent lagers, wines and cocktails - all reasonably priced and well maintained. It's just nice to walk in to a pub, stroll over to the bar, look at the options and not think to yourself 'ahh bugger. .' but instead think 'ooh, what shall I have first?'. The staff are legendary. It seems all to often nowadays that being polite and having a friendly chat with your customers is a bit too difficult for a lot of places. Not with The Chemic. On every visit I have been made to feel like a returning friend and I love that. You instantly feel welcome and relaxed. It appears The Chemic only hire nice, chatty people. This is a very clever move - albeit a very obvious one. The music is always good too. There's no jukebox but you will often hear Motown, Blues and good Indie tunes. They have live music nights there as well, come to think of it. Ska nights, Irish nights and other things will go on in the back room that also features a darts board and an array of board games (if you fancy a geeky night down the pub, playing Trivial Pursuits). The other really nice thing about the place is that everyone who drinks in there appears to be very happy. I think this is because they're all aware that it's the best pub in miles. The Chemic appears to only attract people (and lots of them at the weekend) who are there to have a nice, enjoyable drink (or six) with their mates. I could go on and on but I fear it would just end up sounding like that I was considering proposing marriage to the pub. Which is obviously a ridiculous idea. . . isn't it? Yes, of course it is. How would I fit The Chemic in a church for a start? So I will end this review by adding that the pub has an amazing fish and chip shop (Arkwright's) next door and you're allowed to buy food from there and eat it inside the pub. Good stuff. Very close to Xscape, so it's convenient for dinner when I'm on business trips, I've never tried the hotel restaurant because of this. Check in/out is usually quick and hassle free. The staff are also helpful and friendly. Breakfast is quite good with full English and continental available. I noticed that they have pancakes on my most recent trip but couldn't find any syrup to put on them. They also have bagels and crumpets. The hotel is right next to a railway station (Glasshoughton) so it's quite easy to get to Leeds. My only negative point is that the sliding bathroom door in some rooms is very difficult to use.
