It is an hour before the movie starts so I sat myself down in a booth at a nearby restaurant, Boon Tong Kee, and ordered a "light lunch" of sweet and sour pork and hainanese-style chicken rice.
Do NOT order the sweet and sour pork. (Let the Force guide you before choosing this dish.) It is a pretty-looking dish (arguably), but you are getting very thin "cafeteria-style" slices of pork good for one person, and sauce that is milder than Chowking's. The price most likely reflects how the dish was dressed up--a bed of salad greens and a generous sprinkling of what looked like mango bits, whole cherry tomatoes, and chopped red onion. I can understand the "fusion" in the mango and tomato, but the salad greens seemed too "cheffy" for me. I don't get it.
On the bright side, the hainanese-style chicken rice was really good. What possessed me to pair this with an assertively-flavored dish with a sauce...I'll never know. I guess I was just curious. I might have to come back and order the steamed chicken. read more
