One of the few great used bookstores that is still around. The are at a new location on Katella but it's the same great people running it. Now the old location was bigger, but the new one is still packed wall to wall, and floor to ceiling with everything imaginable. How did I not know about this great used bookstore in Orange? After Yelper extraordinaire and great friend, Kelley U, mentioned the Bookman during a recent conversation, I knew we had to check out this store soon! My son likes collecting vintage books, and this store has a wonderful antique section. I loved looking at the vintage children's books, and I even spent time perusing the old westerns as well.This bookstore is so large that I could spend hours browsing the aisles here. The gentleman who owns this store was really helpful and gave us some great info on what makes certain books so collectible. Since I don't know much about collecting antique books, I found his knowledge and love for books truly wonderful. This was such a fun place to pick up some great last minutes Christmas items too! With everyone going to E-Readers, it's really nice to be able to find those rare, beautiful books at Bookman. I came here to see if they had any Harry Potter books, they did have some but I already got them in my collection. Massive collection of books sorted into genres and subjects. I'd spent most of my time in the astronomy, fine arts, and mythology section. Most books are under $9 in the genres I was looking in. The first room had a large history section sorted into other countries, california history, WW1 and WW2 history. Good amount for science topics in technology, astronomy archaeology, and weather. They also had two other large rooms that had the romance, classics, sports, suspense, intrigue/spy, shakespeare, and musical theater section. The place was nicely organized and clean. I love this place. There is nothing more pleasing than to browse the stacks for gems you didn't know you wanted. They also buy used books for store credit. I recently sold a few and have the credit burning a hole in my pocket. They also host a poetry reading and spoken word every fourth Friday of the month. I came here on a work break..I didn't want to stray too far from work, because traffic was brutal, and home was too far, and I wanted to stay in the area. A bookstore was the perfect stop for me. I miss the days of bookstores, dvds, record stores, blockbuster, etc..and yes I have piles and piles of books to read at home..but I don't care. I always have that ongoing list of books that I eventually want to buy, and read. This store was great! The staff was friendly, and very helpful. The store was pretty big, so they were very helpful in helping me find the sections that I wanted. I've been on a horror kick lately, so I wanted to stock up on some horror classes. I used to have some Edgar Allen Poe books, and Grimm's fairy tale books..but I have no idea where they are in the house..but what luck! I was able to grab both here! I even found the "Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark" books. I was here for probably a little over an hour, before I had to run a few errands before I went to work..but I easily could have stayed a few more hours lol. I wound up buying probably around 10 books, and everything was decently priced for sure. I will definitely be back next time I have a gig in Anaheim! A seriously great store! read more

I'm an adult and yet I still enjoying reading YA Horror books for the 80's and 90's. I never feel judged buying any from Bookman. They never give me a funny look when I buy a Stephen King novel and an R.L. Stine book. They never follow me around because of how I dress. The service there is top-notch. They go above and beyond when you ask if they have a book they do not have on the shelves. They will turn the store upside down if their computer says they have it. And multiple employees will go look for the book while another is looking on the computer. I started to go here when they had a Stephen King companion that hadn't been in print since the 80's and I haven't stopped since. Thanks to them, I have all of Stephen King's written works. The staff is very friendly and will apologize, profusely if they don't have any books you are looking for (even if you still have a stack of books in your hands). If you have any used books, the credit system there is wonderful! They know how to treat a regular customer right. read more

I was going to lunch and spotted a used bookstore in the same shopping center. I was pleasantly surprised to see a clean, well lit store with beautiful book displays and row after row of well-organized books cataloged by subject material. All the books appeared to be gentle used and most have their book jackets. The front desk was a nice gentleman who helped find the books a person was looking for with the aid of his desktop computer. The shop had a website also where books could be ordered online. Very convenient if you don't have time to rummage through shelves of books. I'm more a browser and like to carefully explore. The store is fairly large and browsing is encouraging. I noticed that one worker was setting up chairs and found out that the store was hosting a poetry reading that night. I definitely would recommend this store to anyone looking to find an out-of-print book. This store had a very large inventory. read more

Bookman is my favorite used bookstore in the area. They have an entire aisle of general fiction. I could spend hours browsing through these shelves. The books are well organized by author's last name. They also have a large selection of non-fiction, poetry, biography, etc. I tend to stay in the fiction aisle, but enjoy perusing other areas too. Prices are competitive. Most books I saw were priced at $5 or less. You can save time by searching their online index, but for me, part of the fun is going in blind and getting lost in the search. This is my favorite book store ever. Every time I go in, they have restocked with tons of new (used) books and I usually leave with 5 or 6. Pricing is more than fair, nothing here is overpriced. Whoever the buyer is for the store does a great job at bringing in a variety of quality books, you will not find a lot of "filler" here like at other used book stores. Visited this bookstore last weekend and they had an assortment of books. They have tons of cookbooks, instructional books, art books, a tons of children's books, and almost every genre of books you can think of. If you don't have anything in mind, you can spend hours browsing this place because they have such a large collection. The only downside about this place is that if you are looking for books that are newer (books published within the past 5 years), this may not be the place for you. These books are old but gold. It's like walking into an organized time capsule. If you're open minded and willing to do a bit of digging, you might find something that catches your eye. The prices are cheap and on par with other used bookstores. If you have kids, this is a great place to get them a new collection they'll enjoy. However, they're lacking on graphic novels/comic books. Bookman is my go to bookstore...just moved from its Tustin Street location 3 weeks ago. It's now on Katella Ave not far at all from its original spot. I actually still had a credit voucher from a couple years ago that I just so happen to find...and I also had some books that were given to me that I decided to trade in for some...um...better reads...lol! Yes you can bring your used books here to trade in, or for store credit. You can also check their website before hand...just to make sure that they have the books you're looking for. They have a pretty good selection...so most likely they will have it. They also have a very easy, straight forward & organized categorization system...alphabetical by authors last name on both fiction & non-fiction sides. I will be headed back soon to use up my remaining credit & find some more good reads! read more

After months and months of calling and getting the voice machine all the time, I was pleased that I finally heard a voice on the other end! Bookman is officially open for business at their new location in Katella. He did warn me that books were still in its boxes, yet some were up on their shelves. Spent the day off browsing the shelves for hours. There were a few men still putting up the shelves. And yes, many boxes were around, but that didn't take away from the experience and how I remember the service with this business. Their website is still pretty accurate, and if you need support in locating a book, they will happily assist. I heard all fiction books were up, so that was easy enough. Still, great selection and many books on our lists were available. They've got a wide variety, and used books are under $7. Probably about 50% done with getting all of the inventory up. For those that have a groupon they expired, they will still honor it. Glad to have the bookman back! read more

Super friendly workers. They have books outside that are only 93 cents. I felt like I was at a candy store. They have a clean restroom and the books are quite organized. The art of reading real books will not go away as as long as book lovers continue to buy real books. Reading on a tablet for a short period of time is okay but long exposure is more damaging to your eyes and it can cause headaches. If you are prone to headaches don't stare at electronic screens too often. read more

12/20/2018 STORE IS NOT OPEN FOR BUSINESS YET. New location at 320 E. Katella in Orange. Owner is waiting for final inspection. Store has new bathrooms, new paint, newly remodeled. But full of sealed boxes of books. No shelves yet, so it will be at least a few days before retail sales begin. CALL AHEAD before driving out. I LOVE Bookman and all used book stores so I am VERY HAPPY that the store moved rather than closing. I WILL be back. read more

Love this place! I've been looking for a used bookstore (or, really, any bookstore) near us since we moved into the area around 2 years ago. Checked out a few (some that I already found out were closed :( ), had a few possible Barnes and Nobles to go to, but, overall, nothing that really clicked with me. I finally checked out Bookman a few months ago and have been consistently going at around once a month or once every two months (if household budget allows). I love how there is organization! There is also an effort to have everything be in alphabetical order by author or title, or, at the very least, the books are separated so that fiction is in the fiction area, children's is in the children's, teens in the teens, history in history, etc. Plus, because of how big the store is, you actually do have room to browse instead of feeling like you are in someone's way. Majority of the books are in pretty good condition. All are readable, even if there was some water damage; haven't had any books that had torn pages. Prices range, but it's around either half the price of a new book or less. I love coming here to check out the children's section, hardcover books in fiction, and the arts/crafts area. Also, the customer service has been awesome! I'm pretty sure I've met the Bookman at least every time that I've been there, and he's a sweetheart! Just loves his books, loves his customers, and knows where everything is! Plus, his Facebook page keeps me up in spirits; after all, haven't you found odd things in old books before? But, yes, I've never had an issue with their staff. Parking is fine. I've never seen it so overcrowded that I couldn't find a parking space. They do buy books for store credit. Be aware that the store credit can be used for up to half your book purchase. So, for example, if you have $10 store credit, and you're purchasing $12 in books, then you can use $6 of the store credit. Very fair, in my opinion! Rounded up to 4.5 stars. My only knock is that they don't have as many hard covers, but that isn't completely in their control. I've been to many used book stores and this one has the widest selection! I love the people working here-always friendly and willing to help. I've never brought books to trade in because I hoard them, but the prices are fair and I LOVE that you can go online and make a "want list" and if something comes in that you're looking for, you can purchase it online or request to hold it. I have found several various printings of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books this way. (I collect them) Including a first US edition! Visited here with my boyfriend on our search for new books to devour. Loved the huge selection of books and sections as well as their filing system as it's separated by subject and author (either first or last name, can't remember). Some of the books are dated, but I like how it adds to the variety of available books and since many of these books are donated, there are books here that you might not find in other book stores. Also, THE PRICE! I could go on all day about the prices! Many of the books are around $5!!! I think this is a great deal seeing as books typically go for about $10+ depending on where you buy them from. It seems that the older/more damaged the book is, then the lower the price is. I saw some books going for about $3 (what a treat!) If you actually want to take your time in here, there is no air conditioner so it gets pretty hot during Summer (I entered as dry as the dessert and left with pit stains). Something you can do to counter this is look on their website beforehand at some of the books that they have so that you have an idea of where to look and what to grab when you're in the store. To wrap it all up, I love this book store and I will be back due to the wide book selection/variety and the unbeatable prices! read more
