I visit The Bookman when I'm in the area and love browsing the aisles. On a recent visit I took three books in to see if there was any interest in buying them. I spoke with someone I think was the owner and he said he would take the books and offered a price which was store credit. I wasn't able to find any books on my visit but he offered to cover my books for free with a plastic covering because it would protect the dust covers. I certainly agreed. That act of generosity will never be forgotten and I will certainly return when I'm in the area. Thank you. read more

As my Pug and I stood in a long line at the Barnes and Noble today, about to purchase Brave New World in paperback for $17+tax, I remembered that I had seen this place somewhere. I promptly discarded the overpriced reprint in a display of new releases and headed directly here. Man, was that a good move! As soon as I walked in I was hit with that wonderful, familiar smell of old books and two smiling faces. After a brief photo shoot of the Pug by one of the friendly gentlemen for their FB page, I began looking around...and around and around. This place is huge! It's like that recurring dream where you keep finding new rooms you didn't know you had in your house. I picked up 5 books for little more than what I was about to pay at B&N. They were out of Brave New World but who cares! I'll be busy for a while with my 5 "new" novels and can check again for it when I return. And I will return. Thanks guys! read more

I recently moved to the area, and I've been looking for a good used bookstore to find some biographies and film books that aren't as easily found. I was so surprised at how big the store is and how large the film and biography sections themselves were. I found what I was looking for and more and can't wait to come back! read more

What a great find! I grew up in Orange County but just discovered this store last week while browsing Yelp. I'm so glad I came across this gem. I was short on time when I went to check out the store, so was only able to browse a few sections, but it was clear they had an amazing selection to choose from. The general fiction area was quite good - I scored a few books from some of my favorite writers (Murakami, Austere, David Foster Wallace). They carry a good variety of both mainstream and lesser known authors. I also picked out some books from their philosophy section which is way above average, with a lot of hard to find stuff. When I have more time I'll be back to check out the rest of their extensive offerings. The people working here were really informative and cheerful while assisting customers. At the check-out I was asked if I had a coupon..said I was a first time customer and she gave me a discount. I thought that was awesome. Go to their website and sign up for the mailing list and they'll email you coupons from time to time. Also, the site has a searchable database so you can can see if they have the particular items you're looking for before coming in to the store. read more

I love this place. Whenever my kids need a book for school, I can always find a used one at Bookman so that I don't have to pay full price for a book that my kids will only read and use for a couple of weeks. A great, comfortable used bookstore with a nice, wide selection. This place has tons of character, as well as tons of choices. Just about every genre/subject is well-represented here: mystery, sci-fi/fantasy, classics, contemporary fiction, romance, history, travel, philosophy, Beat literature, art, music, foreign language, etc. Equally nice is the fact that they're open until 8 p.m. on most days, unlike many other such stores which close up at around 5. Neither the best nor the worst in terms of their prices. If you have a lot of old books lying around that you don't really have any intention of revisiting, you can always trade some of them in for store credit, which will cover half the cost of your selections. I've been going fairly regularly for several years now: I guess it's become a bit like an old friend. read more

I was first taken to this place as a child to tag along with either my mother or sister in the early 90's when it was a relatively new place. These days, it is my go to place to find hidden gems and sweet deals! While I do look in one of my favorite sections pretty often, I almost always seem to find something new. Bookman is a tried and true source for any book you are looking for. They have been in this location forever and ever. The staff is wonderful and friendly. They have a great selection. I heard about Bookman from a neighbor and decided to bring in some books, since one of their services is buying used books. I didn't realize how big the store was until I got inside. The bookshelves are to the ceiling and the numerous aisles go deep back, giving you an amazing, vast collection to peruse. While the friendly staff went through my boxes of books (they even helped carry them in from my car), I decided to see what I could find on their shelves on the subject of photography. I was able to locate that section with ease and was pleasantly surprised that there were many modern books on digital photography and software. I was given store credit for the portion of my books that they bought from me and they helped put the remaining books back in my car. They've been in business for 25 years and that says success! Especially surviving the electronic book age. Nothing replaces holding a real book, in my opinion. Great store and I know I'll be back. read more

I'm sure this store meets a lot of people's expectations, and I myself have been a customer for 20 years. However, I base this review on a recent experience that left me a very unhappy customer. I've bought and sold hundreds of books here over the years. During that time I accumulated a substantial store credit from selling books. I never used it thinking it was there for a rainy day. Today was that day because I'm soon moving out of state. I didn't want to ship any books that were not part of my dedicated collection of first editions, signed books, and other rarities. So I took in all the odds and ends to add to my store credit and exchange it all for a few valuable books. It turned out I was misled to think the full credit could be used to buy books. It's only good for half of a purchase, so I had to spend a hundred dollars to redeem the credit of $200. On top of that, I could not use it to purchase any valuable books. I picked out three books worth about $100 and asked the owner if i could just surrender the remaining credit instead of having to put in cash or take more books home that I didn't really want. That seemed fair to me, but the owner rigidly held to his limited policy. In my opinion, that's very poor customer service. For 20 years I brought him hundreds of good books for pennies on the dollar, and the rat wouldn't cut me a break in the end. Obviously, I'll never patronize the place again because I'm moving, but even if that were not the case, I'd never give them my business again. If roaming dusty bookshelves is your thing, this is your place. But if you just want a book to read, go to the library. If you have books to sell, donate them to Goodwill or a library, and you'll get more from a tax deduction than you will from these Shylocks. read more

We enjoy this bookstore and selection often! I have to stop myself from spending hours in here, and from spending lots of cash. We drop off books quite often, and get store credit for up to 1/2 off of our purchases. My boys still like to read actual books instead of the digital kind, so it is great to get books for vacation and other uses (just picked some up for our DC Trip). I must say this store is a GEM! I couldn't believe how many books were in this store! AND all of them were nicely organized! The owner of the store knew exactly where the book I was looking for and held it for me until I got there. I was searching for Julius Caesar Barron's Editions (easy read) for my daughters class. Apparently, its a hot item! My daughter just told me she needed this book today...ummm it was 730(pm)!! I had called over 12 bookstores in OC and this is the only one open and had the book. I have been to most of the used book stores in Southern California and Bookman is absolutely the best. There are a few small places that can compete with Bookman vis-à-vis the quality of their selection but many of these shops are much smaller or have much higher prices. Bookman regularly has new stock coming in, their prices are very competitive and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I buy and sell books at there on a regular basis and hope they stay in business for a long time. read more

Everywhere we visit, San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, the wine country, etc, I always search out bookstores that carry used books (my wife thinks I'm quite daft). I have yet to find any that compare with the selection (I'm into classic lit) that Bookman offers. I visited a highly recommended bookstore in the San Diego area that had no organization by title or author (total confusion). Bookman is organized by author so it's like mining gold once you find an author you like. The fun part of used books is that inventory changes all the time so I go every weekend with anticipation of new finds. My goal is to buy more books than I can read so I have plenty to read when I retire. Plus, browsing is free therapy from a long, stressful workweek. read more

Used book stores are a rare breed in Orange County California, and I feel privileged to havean excellent one just a couple of miles away from my home. The staff are very helpful when you need them, but in my opinion the best thing to do in a used bookstore with a terrific selection is to get lost. I come here once a month to get lost and always end up coming away with several volumes. My only complaint is with their policy of only allowing a percentage of credit for books traded or sold to be applied to any one sale. I would suggest selling your unwanted books elsewhere and coming here to replace them read more

Lotta love for bookman. Been going there for years. But I feel that it's not the place to go if you have something specific you're looking for, it's definitely a browsing store, but it's totally worth the trip.
