This was my go-to bookstore when I lived in the area. Like most people, I initially only went here to impress a well-read girl I had the hots for, thinking it would show her how anti-establishment and intellectual I was. Well, that didn't work out (she married a musician) but it did lead me to a fantastic place that I must have patronized a hundred times. While you can find every book on the planet on Amazon, there is something to be said about taking in the aroma and ambiance of thousands of actual physical books. It is also a lot more fun to browse the stacks in person and randomly stumble upon some hidden gem that you'd never find online because it wouldn't have enough reviews. Is review culture ruining our society? Why am I posting on yelp? Bottom-line: check it out before places like this become relics of the past. Also: it's cheaper than Amazon. read more

This used to be my favorite bookstore as a kid. You could bring in old books to get credit to buy books. However the books here are a bit expensive for used books. All in all not a bad bookstore. You'll never know what you'll find here read more

This place really did look like a nice place, but aside from the rows upon rows of books, it didn't have quite much else to offer. They carry a large collection of books, but they seem to be either several copies of the same book or books that no one seems overly interested in. A lot of the paperback books are in sub par condition, something that wasn't very appealing. They do, however, do an excellent job of keeping things organized enough to be able to find what you're looking for. The staff wasn't very warm either. Upon entering, I was ignored by the two employees at the counter and as I walked through the aisles, the staff at work ignored me as well. I generally like to be left alone while shopping, but a simple "hello" would have been greatly appreciated. Still, the Bookman was one of the nicer used bookstores I've visited, it just isn't one I would frequent. read more

The staff here is absolutely wonderful. Always helpful and some of the vetted ones can tell you if they have a book and exactly where that book is right off the top of their head. They're friendly and up to chat if you want and I love that I can just drop my books off for store credit and peruse around. The prices are fair and the quality of the books are all in pretty good condition. They know what quantity to keep for each book (which will effect which ones you can get credit on) so the place isn't bombarded with that summer's over-bought "fifty Shades of Grey." They carry odd-ball older pieces and contemporary novels and their General Fictions and Sci-Fi/Horror sections are by far their best. I literally block out a Saturday for this place and religiously go alone because I can Easily spend four or five hours here going through their shelves. There's some really amazing stuff here. The Bookman is one of the *only* places in the whole of Orange Co. that radiates the same depth and presence that I've truly missed since coming here from San Francisco. The new location is far better organized than the old store. And though there are still some stacks in front of the shelves, they're completely accessible and you can look through them with ease. Their staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and their website is actually accurate. If you're looking for a specific title, you can locate it through their search engine and you can purchase it there. Or you can go in with the title you found online and they'll locate it for you. This is literally the only real used bookstore in OC and every time I've been, my family's had to physically pull me away from the aisles to leave. I went to their grand opening party and it was awesome. If you're an old-world bookstore lover, this is a sanctuary! read more

I love this place! I found it randomly at its old location, and I always made a trip at least once a month. It's a great place to find books I need for class, or even one that I just want to read (I picked up Library of Souls here.) there's also a nice selection of manga! I absolutely love this place. You walk in and it just smells like books aka heavenly. The people are so nice and will let you loiter as long as you like. I've walked into this store and looked up and suddenly an hour and a half have passed. They have lots of variety and sometimes multiple copies of what you're looking for so you can pick and choose according to your fancy. Also, everything is very reasonably prices. The only thing I have any sort of potential qualm with is parking. But once you get inside, it doesn't even matter. read more

I buy all my books from this independently owned and operated bookstore. The staff is friendly and helpful. The selection is varied and enormous. I often get lost for hours in my book loving frenzy. Paul told me about their classics in paperback section and I was in heaven for months. They order new books for me, too. My family and friends know to get me gift certificates here. They have a great selection considering its a used book store. They really do have books that are hard to find or out of print. For example I bought Leonard Nimoy's and Charlie Chaplin's Autobiographies at the Bookman, where you cannot find them anywhere else. Amazing place. read more

Just came in on a whim looking for some brand used books. They have a huge selection! I mostly looked at sci fi. Prices are ok half off of retail pretty standard, to more off. Its kind of random. The only reason that I dropped it a star is some of the paperbacks look like they're on their last legs and I wouldn't pay half publisher price on those... i got a couple of books that I'm really happy with and the mrs got a bunch of books! Overall very happy with our experience. People that worked there seemed nice enough. read more

My boyfriend took me here when we were first dating because I expressed my interest in old books (specifically psychology) He called around and found out that this location had books written by Sigmund Freud, and took me here by surprise to go and get them! The bookstore is amazing to me, they has every subject, any book you can think of they either have there or will put it on a wishlist/waitlist and will call you when they find it or get one in. (great customer service if you ask me) Also, they are not your typical snarky library type employees either, they are so friendly and helpful. I've been to nearly every used bookstore in the greater Los Angeles area (Iliad Bookshop, Brand Books, The Last Bookstore, Book Alley, Cliffs Books, etc.). Bookman in Orange County tops them all with the largest selection I've seen in Southern California. The prices are also reasonable and (this is a huge plus) their entire inventory is searchable on their website. As a matter of personal preference, they also have without a question the largest science and philosophy sections I've seen at any used or new bookstore with the exception of Powell's Books in Portland, OR. Bookman may be a little out of the way for those in L.A., but if you're obsessed with used bookstores as I am, then this place is definitely worth the trip. read more

Bookman is the kind of neighborhood bookstore dreams are made of: Rows of neatly shelved books, friendly staff, lovely smell of mustiness that comes only with used books. It's a good place to stumble onto gems -- but because of its eclectic selection, there's a good chance you also won't find. I was looking for Vendela Vida's "And Now You Can Go," and though the Orange store didn't have it, the Huntington Beach store did, and the Orange store transferred the book over for me to pick up a few days later. It kinda worries me that they don't specialize in any one genre ... non-chain general bookstores are closing like crazy. Please don't close, Bookman! read more

I absolutely love this store! There are aisles and aisles of books of all subjects for people of all ages. Books are used and in good condition and reasonably priced. I bought a couple of books for my daughter all good condition for 50 cents each!!! I don't know why I have not heard of this book store before. You can stay in this store for hours!!! Great used bookstores are so hard to come by in my opinion. This one is fantastic!! Huge selection of used books, most in almost perfect condition. I didn't see a book over the price of $10 during my time in the store. Be sure to check out their 93¢ racks out front. I found a hidden gem, out of print book about John F. Kennedy there. Sold on Amazon for no less than $25, and I got it for 93¢! Great store for any book lover! read more

Bookman is awesome. Close to me and super cheap books, I think yes! The staff here can be either really nice or really busy, but they always help if you ask. They had an enormous selection of really old science fiction literature and anytihng you can imagine. Kids books, classics, how-to & so much more. They may look small from the outside, but you can get lost in the wonderful selection they offer-I know I have. One thing I always appreciate most about their staff is that if they do not have a book available, they do try to see where they can find it for you--or even order it for you. read more

Wandering in here is like finding Aladdin's Cave. I went in hoping I might find something for my boyfriend who is interested in comparative religious studies. I thought I might be lucky to find something, anything on the subject, as I'd had no luck in chain bookstores. I left with four beautiful hardcover bound books and could have taken a dozen more, which I was so surprized by, but that's the beauty of this place. They may not have the exact title you are looking for, but they certainly will have 100 other books you'll happily replace it for. read more

Having frequented other used book stores, I must say my first visit here was impressive. Very organized and the two folks who worked there were very nice and helpful.
