Party of five. We anticipated our first post pandemic excursion this week. We pre-booked our lane for our glow night adventure and headed to Bonnie Doon bowling lanes. This Ally has many lanes, most of which were empty this evening. Tonight was a GLOW NIGHT EVENT. The alleys were dark. More dark than anticipated. The only glow we experienced was At each entry point. The lanes, seating areas do not illuminate. lanes were well-maintained. Bummer experience, Due to extreme darkness and melancholy country music that played throughout our visit. We enjoy country, but the evening was filled with slow jams, not reminiscent of a fun family night out.... not what we thought we were signing up for. One employee stated the music was the morning cleaning crews choice. Another staff member stated the manager had the password to change the music, despite an inquiry, three hours into our excursion and upon our departure the melancholy music remained. We ordered several menu items, drinks which were mediocre. We made the best of an unfortunate situation, DISMAL. Looking forward to booking with another Alley in the future. read more

I've bowled here previously, and shame I haven't submitted a review before now. Situated in the lower level of the Bonnie Doon Mall and there's 2 sets of stairs from inside the mall to get you here. Just a note I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere - it is 5-pin bowling, so everyone can bowl here. And it's also handicapped accessible - there is elevator access - although the ramp to the lanes looks a little Matterhorn-ish. Not expensive to play if you have a few friends join you. $36 for an hour of all you can bowl, so no tracking frames, and $2 shoe rental works out for 4 friends to $11.55 each including tax. Discount alert: if you sign up to their newsletter on the website, they'll send you a $10 voucher to come bowl as well as a special Birthday gift and additional coupons. Reading reviews says that there are 48 lanes, and indeed the place just goes on, and on, and on...I didn't count, we bowled lane 9 near the beginning. You can pretty much show up any night and there will be a lane waiting for you without reservations. The lanes have a "lob-guard" but we didn't see the need - I suppose it keeps repair costs down for the bowlers unclear on the difference between slow-pitch and 5-pin bowling. Ditch the paper and pencils, you don't have to score your own. (Phew!) Being math challenged, I wondered if I was going to embarrass myself in front of my friends. Although the scoring equipment looks modern, the displays (tube TVs)...are aged a fair bit past retirement and don't display quite as well as they did when new. The picture from 2012 shows the clarity issue then, and it's the same now. The balls and shoes are worn, and decor is remarkably classic "bowling alley". I'm no expert bowler, so I can't tell if the lanes are good bad or indifferent, but they seemed plenty fun enough for our recreation. A note about the liquor licence - they close at 9 on a Thursday night. It might have been nice to know that before 8:30 when they stop serving, since we didn't get going until just before 8 we enjoyed one round, and had to go on fumes and a whole lot of giggles at our lack of skill to close out the night. Saturday night glow bowling starts at 7pm - and it is a hoot. If you need lane guards for the little ones - I think I saw them hanging down the way, call ahead and ask if you'd like them. Next time, I think the adults are going to be having that accessory added. (We need some serious practice to get over 80!) I know I've attended adult bowling parties here - accommodating large groups is not a problem. Company parties, Birthdays, Fundraisers... There is a snack bar, it's standard fast food à la bowling alley. I'd probably say if you have dietary restrictions or sensitivities - you might need to snack before you come. Summertime when it's boiling outside, it's air conditioned and pleasant here, so if you need an escape I'd recommend it. I don't think people consider it an entertainment option in the summer. Better for me, but the secret's out now! There were a couple of lanes closed and they looked like they were being worked on, so upkeep is ongoing. The ball return is definitely vintage, but worked flawlessly. I think this is the first time *_ever_* I didn't have to ask (and wait) for assistance to get the pins unjammed from the pin setter or the balls coming back! KUDOS and +1 star. I've always passed this bowling alley when I find myself strolling through this mall. I finally had a chance to go as my husband had some sort of discount coupon. It was however, expired by a day, but the staff were good enough to let us use it still. They are super friendly too. It's well lit despite being in the basement level. There's a lot of lanes here and the bowling shoes were in really good condition. They even had toddler sized shoes for my mini bowler. The children's lanes are 5 pin & have guard rails so that no balls are gutterballs which helps improve everyone's overall game & adds to the fun. They also have the bowling assist for kids so that they can bowl by themselves with minimal assistance by placing the ball on a slide-like contraption. The balls were also fairly manageably sized for both parents and kids. This would be a great place for kids birthdays because there's lots of seating too. read more

I'm in a five pin bowling league here and we have a lot of fun. They recently renovated, so the lanes are in great shape. It's a quirky place in a mall basement. They won't serve you beer until you have a lane. Some of the balls are dented and in questionable shape. The staff are either really nice or pretty mean. It feels timeless and I love it. The one negative thing I have to say is that I'll never eat here again. I had a really unpleasant burger and it made me ill. Overall, it's a blast. read more

I hadn't been to Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes in years, so I was surprised to rediscover that it has 48 lanes! Usually the older bowling alleys only have a dozen or so lanes, so imagine 48 lanes of glorious bowling tucked into the basement of Bonnie Doon Mall. It wasn't very busy when we got there on a Saturday night around 7pm, but more and more people kept coming as the night went on. We used a Groupon and all we had to do was hand it over and get our shoes. No fuss, no muss. Girl at the desk was friendly and chill. The snack bar looked like it had a lot to choose from (burgers, sandwiches, pizza, fries, nachos), but all we got was a large pop for the super low price of $1.70. They had something here that I've never seen before. 10 practice balls before you start playing your game! Nice little warm up. Cute/funny graphics on the screen when you get a strike/spare/gutter ball. I swear our lane was wonky - it must have been crooked or something for real. The balls were doing all sorts of weird sharp curves that just aren't possible unless the lane is whack. Maybe (hopefully) it was just our lane. We had a great time regardless. This is my favourite place to bowl in Edmonton; not because it's the best service/atmosphere/quality wise, but because I personally am a weakling who struggles with big balls. I also think that the location is really convenient, in that Bonnie Doon is quite central in my scope of the city. It's basically genius that a bowling alley was built under a mall - malls should always have some entertainment element to them to balance out all the shopping and eating. Plus, a bowling alley, something that doesn't require windows, and just sprawls above ground.... so, despite my typical aversion spending much time underground, I actually find this practical aspect of the alley charming, and makes up for it's less than glam decor. I appreciate the amount of bench seating there is, and the convenient granny coat hangers, though I think more functional table/counter surfaces could be provided. And this is on par with Wal-Mart for places you'd want to take a bathroom selfie in. Because I'm not hauling around massive and heavy balls that my puny little arms can't fully handle, I end up having all the fun that my romanticized perception of bowling had promised. I have not tried any foods here, but the bottled coolers seemed pricey to me - so maybe head out for happy hour somewhere else (maybe someplace with a great bathroom for your selfies too) before you game. I've been going to this place since I was a kid. Their AMA deal is amazing, 3 games and shoes for $15.00. Their drinks and food and reasonably priced and they have a good selection. The lanes are well maintained but the balls need replacing, their covered in deep knicks that hurt the fingers and make it hard to direct the ball properly. Lastly, we had to ask for a new lane as they tried to place our party of 3 between two children's birthday parties. They were very nice about the switch though. read more

I didn't know this Bowling Alley existed but I guess this was only my second time to Bonnie Doon Mall. The first time I just walked around it and bought lunch at the Safeway cafe. Seemed like a sleepy neighbourhood mall with not much different or special. There's quite a bit of construction going on around the mall so the exits and entrances are a little more congested but it doesn't really limit access. The lanes themselves look dated but decent. The score boards are kinda old an glitchy as well but I think that's the case with ALL lanes at the moment. The shoes have seen better days but everyone is on a level playing field because we have to wear them! Otherwise there's not much memorable or remarkable about this place. read more

A very good place to bowl though always busy when a normal person would be free ie. weekends, after work, holidays. This leads to wait times of nearly an hour for a lane. And of course there are no lane reservations on those important weekend days ... Why would there be? It's almost as if there is a shortage of bowling alleys in the city. It surprises me that this would be such a popular activity. People still bowl, and the activity has stood the test of time. They do serve alcohol, but the stuff on tap is pretty harsh and could likely be used as an industrial cleaner! Lots of younger adults and teenagers. Not that is a bad thing, just know this going in. Price is 5$ to 7.50$ per round depending on when you go. 3$ for shoes. Still a fun activity! read more

The automatic score machine malfunctioned throughout the two games we played, from the first ball of the first frame, when we had to go up for a reset. Tthe lane turned off when the final member of our party was on the last ball of the final frame, at the technical closing time,but the two lanes on either side of us were allowed to keep playing long after that. The staff member was completely unapologetic and certainly offered nothing to compensate for the bad experience, even though at that point she said she suddenly remembered that the lane she put us on has been malfunctioning lately. She should not have put us there to begin with and should have moved us right away on the first frame. Sometimes it's fine at this bowling alley, and we have even had birthday parties here, the customer service is extremely uneven and sometimes outright awful, as it was today. read more

As far as bowling places go this place was alright. The staff are a bit uninterested, and lazy. But other then that is ok..its a really spacious place though and there seems to always be free lanes. The shoes are probably some of the worst as far as bowling shoes go though..not that bowling shoes are ever particularly good; but these are BAD bad..they need to replace them! read more

Call it what you want: Retro; Throw Back; Antiquated. Bonnie Doon Bowl IS FUN. Modern scoring system, 5-pin bowling with glow bowl spells family fun for me. Small concession has enough snacks but not what I call healthy but that's not why I am there. Our office had our year end party there it was a huge success. The lanes are cool because I love that if you bowl they will still show you what you got so you can see or look back in the middle of your game.I bowl there all the time it is always fun and I always enjoy it.The staff are awesome people some of them helped me with my bowling.The food is awesome whenever I order food it is always good I would always recommend this bowling alley.The burgers and the mozzarella sticks are the best things they always cook right.Never burnt. read more

Went here yesterday for the first time. My family and I bought 3 games. The service at the food counter was good, however, it could have been better. Their washrooms need to be tended to more often. We were there for two hours and the entire time it was out of paper towel. All in all it is a nice place to go bowling. read more

We decided to meet up with some friends, who have kids the same age as ours and go do some bowling. We had two lanes going for the 8 of us. When we arrived, we were told that we would be billed hourly for the time we played. We were happy with that and proceeded to bowl for almost an hour. There were many different sizes/weights of balls for us to use. Some lighter ones for the kids and heavier ones for the boys. We were able to get bumpers put up for the kidlets, so they didn't have as many gutter balls. The area was fairly clean and there is a lot of room when you are bowling. The shoes seemed to be well taken care of and weren't tattered or worn as much as I would assume in a bowling alley. They offer some food such as mozza sticks, pizza and burgers with your choice of pop or some alcohol, which is nice to have when you are hanging with friends. After about an hour, we went to go and pay for our two games of bowling, and the lady stated that it had been started as a per game not per hour. She then proceeded to tell us it was going to be $60/lane because there were two games per lane. My girlfriend came to explain then, so we tidied up and went and stood in line to go and pay for these and complain, but by the time we got to the front of the line again and the kids had cleaned up it was 1.5 hours and even though this was billed per game, the guy said that either way it would amount to the same. Just, very poor customer service with the payments. Bowling use to be a cheap afternoon and now it seems to be more of a hassle then a fun time. read more
