I don't get to Berlin often, but when I do I like to buy freshly roasted beans from a roaster ranked in the Top 50 in the world. I have tried several dedicated specialty coffee roasters in Berlin but now focus nearly exclusively on Bonanza. Big, rich, complex and wonderfully distinctive selections, really deftly roasted. My visit to Prenzlauer Berg was made especially worthwhile by an employee who not only knew the current selections in detail, but had excellent personal recommendations. She said she was particularly impressed by the La Pitina Natural Costa Rica, and WOW did she nail that. What a full-on flavor bomb those beans turned out to be, and her recommendation of the Akinyi Shamba Kenya was also knockout - - LOVE these coffees. After that visit I ordered them again online from here in Hamburg, and am again very pleased. I really appreciate Bonanza's service and dedication (not to forget superb buying and roasting!) across all facets of the operation. The best in Berlin. Adorable location, it's away from street noise and traffic, tucked away behind some buildings and right next to a preschool with farm animals (in Berlin, who knew!?). There's outside seating in a quite courtyard and plenty of room inside too. The espresso is absolutely delicious, staff are friendly, the pastries are also great. Worst Christmas Experience Ever! Came in Dec 24th in the morning to buy a pack of coffee beans intended as a Xmas present -- they said they were closed and that their credit card reader was switched off. They offer oat & almond milk for vegans! Their oat & sesame date vegan cookie is delicious! The space is best for very small groups or couples with seating throughout & outside. The WiFi allows you to work or play while enjoying the coffee. The music is R&B euro style. Order when you walk in & they bring the coffee and water to your table. The staff speaks better English than I do and are friendly. The other customers do run off with the sugar jar but it made its way to me quickly! The look inside is very clean & minimal, not fussy. I've never had oat milk before but the flavor works well with their coffee. They do not offer decaf but I've noticed that caffeinated coffee does not ramp me up here like it does in the US. Though there were plenty of options for coffee between here & the Schonhauser s-bahn station, I'm glad I had my first Prenzlauer Berg cappuccino here! read more

I usually prefer a V60 brew, but every once in a while I don't mind a shot of espresso with a dollop of frothy milk. And I have found very few places that do milky coffee better than Bonanza Coffee Heroes. Bonanza also roasts their own beans, and they are happy to grind them for you - anyway you want! I got a lovely light roast to bring home to my Hario drip pot, the only downside was the price which was nearly the same as back home (Oslo that is). I think I paid 15 euros or so for a bag. But for me, it's still totally worth it. I also find Bonanza's minimalistic interior very appealing, and in contrast to other reviews I have read (here or elsewhere) I have found the service to be excellent - and for the staff to more than helpful answering all my coffee related questions. Some stupid, some (hopefully) not. Only negative, it's about five minutes too far from my work.. not making it the regular lunch time hangout it could have been! read more

There were so many people at this cafe when we went!! Upon entering, the counter area was kind of open but still on the side, so I was confused at first about where to order. Their menu is super simple, with a few espresso drink options and some coffee-related dessert options. There was still seating left inside despite how many people were in there. The decor was very clean and minimal, and fit the hip Prenzlauerberg cafe vibe perfectly. Stacked on one wall were coffee paraphernalia that I eventually want for myself: Chemexes, Aeropresses, water boilers, etc. all for sale. There was also an island with coffee machine looking things near the entrance that I am still perplexed by. Either way, it's a really good space to chill and the people working there are really nice. I got a flat white with their Ethiopian coffee, which was more full bodied and fruity than I was used to. It was still really quality coffee, and I enjoyed it in the nice atmosphere the cafe provided, even when it was packed full of people because of the Sunday flea market nearby. I lived across the street from Bonanza for 3 months and rain or shine (one being more common than the other...) this place was always packed. It is clear that it's the neighborhood spot for coffee. What they do (espresso, traditional capuccino and latte) they do very well, but do not ask them to step out of what they know or what is sought after in a Berlin coffee joint, aka: Ice Coffee or Cold Brew because these are fads unique to the USA and like one can imagine "no one does it better". The joint is owned by Japanese coffee lovers and attended too by your average hipster German barista. Service is not out of the ordinary but I also don't attend this place looking for a 6 star Balinese Hotel style service. Even though a little over priced I can't deny that the coffee is musk, full bodied and all in all proper! Used to come here in the early days, when Bonanza was one of the few really good coffee places in Berlin. Now there are plenty, some better than Bonanza (Godshot, Barn, Krümel, etc.) and while the place - overrun as usual - still can make good coffee, the douche-y guy at the cash register treats people exactly as you would expect in a place that does not give a hoot about individual customers. Today, my request to have the coffee (almost 4 Euros) in a cup was refused, instead I was given a dinky paper cup - awful (someone known to the barista came out with a cup). I really want to give this place 4 stars. The coffee shop is very nice and they make it seem like it's a chemist pouring the drip coffee. My only gripe is that it is way overpriced! A small cup of coffee costs 2.5 euros and its not even topped off. A small cup of drip coffee costs 4.5 euros and you are getting a 3/4 cup of small coffee if you're lucky. I tried to tell them more than once, "no room for cream", and they only put another drip of coffee in the cup. For Berlin prices, that is very expensive! I was already irritated by the fact of not getting a full small cup of coffee and the fact that I am getting half that for that much is ridiculous. They roast and make a darn good coffee. The espresso I had here was the best coffee i got in Berlin. Hands down. If you know Ritual from San Francisco, Bonanza's coffee is very close to matching Ritual's dedication and perfection to roasting coffee beans. If you are living in Berlin and like coffee you will hear about this place sooner or later. And it's all true what they say about it: it is certainly one of the best coffee places in the city. They roast their own beans, grind them and really celebrate coffee as an art. It's pretty nerdy and pretty hipster, but the coffees they produce are just worth all the show. Their espresso maker is a pure beauty. The machine is apparently worth close to 20.0000 Euro. It's worth it to already to come here and just see the machine. Their flat white is outstanding and for me the best I ever had anywhere in the world. Their special is their filter coffee. It's a bit pricey for Berlin standards but totally worth it. I bet you never had a filter coffee that's that tasty. If you want to sit down and study or read and enjoy your coffee then this place is not the best choice as seating is limited. Bonanza was exactly what I hoped for - amazing craft espresso. That's the main point of buying coffee instead of making it yourself right? These guys and girls know how to do it exceptionally well! It is immediately obvious because you walk inside and are confronted with various brew methods and stations instead of a traditional counter. Once you pick your brew method, bean origin/taste (roasted in house), and drink style, they masterfully craft it in a matter of minutes. I was lucky enough to get a seat and enjoyed the minimal ambiance during my smooth and flavorful, not acidic, burned, or too fruity, cappuccino. My only complaint about Bonanza is the atmosphere is not very inviting: seating is limited and uncomfortable, and the front counter area is a bit hectic and confusing. My friends went to Bonanza and walked out immediately because it was overwhelming and confusing. But if that's not the type of coffee consumer they're catering to, then that's ok too! The employees are nice and informative and most speak English, so give it a try and reward yourself with a great espresso experience! read more

Berlin's third wave coffee game is strong. Bonanza was one of the highlights of my unofficial coffee shop tour there. They have a delicious flat white and the baristas obviously know their stuff. It's reminiscent of SF/Williamsburg in Brooklyn in terms of the hipster vibe. They also grind their own beans (I believe). There are only two or three small tables inside, but there is some outdoor seating too. Highly recommend to anyone who takes their coffee very seriously. read more

Bets coffee in Berlin. On Sundays, as there is the market over the road Mauerpark it gets like... WAY too busy... so if you want to go on a Sunday maybe go later in the day after 4pm when its chilled out a bit. All the staff are friendly and coffee lovers/freaks - they know their stuff. I usually go for Flat White or Latte (more milk), although sometimes I like a filter, TBH I prefer "black coffee"/ Americano but they don't do that, and in summer I take a espresso and pour it over the ice myself because that's also something they don't like. So, we asked for advice. They said "this coffee is low acidity." Either they gave us the wrong cup (see below) or they don't know their product. I tried to order a cup of coffee that had beans loaded into a grinder. They told me it's not available. I tried to order a different cup from a different part of the bar where it was indicated I could find the beans that actually were available for brewing. Second try, also a fail. I finally got lucky on my third try and thank god, they DO have that coffee available. Ok. We've got two coffees on order. Coffees are brewed and... they brewed the wrong coffee. And, they weren't sure which cup was which, meaning that at least for this first cup we don't know what we are drinking, and we think it's not what we ordered. Waiting 6 minutes for a rebrew of the second cup, hopefully using the correct beans this time. The first cup tastes nice despite being high acidity, so 2 stars for not having crappy coffee, but really guys, figure out how to run a coffee shop. :( read more
