It's also a little on the dark side so you find yourself angling your menu for some light to read it. But, all this said, it's a popular place - reservations are recommended on the weekends. Fortunately, we went on a weeknight so we're seated right away. Service is friendly and efficient. She brought us our drinks and took our orders right away. I ordered the NY Strip, "Gaucho Style," which comes blackened with Parmesan-garlic fries, roasted veggies and chimichurri sauce. The steak was cooked to medium and was still tender and delicious. The "blackened" seasoning was perfect for the steak. The only drawback was a long, tough tendon running the length of the cut. Everything else on the plate was exceptional. The fries were crispy, hot and full of flavor. The roasted Brussels sprouts and broccoli had a nice char to them and likewise flavorful. I got to try my wife's baked salmon. It was moist and tasty. Unfortunately, the accompanying honey-lemon-dill sauce was a bit too sweet. Again, service was above board. We were checked on often, my iced tea glass was filled without the need to ask. Prices are slightly higher than expected but reflects current price increases all around. BUT, if you grab some drinks, order some apps and enjoy the big screen displays, it's easy to see why Mr. Mike's is never a boring place.

THE FIRM LOUNGE & GRILL…read more Talk about imprudent timing, opening at the sunrise of the pandemic, and having to writhe and wriggle from the gate. Thankfully, the Firm did so within the hull of a sunken juggernaut, the revered Copper Pig. Alas, schedules and the aforementioned writing career prevented me from visiting The Firm until now, a fact I now regret, as it impeded my efforts to ridicule and oversexualize its name. That being said, it was a great film with Tom Cruise. Where was I? Erections? No, The Firm, right. No sex jokes. The first real surprise upon entering was how much they adopted their own personality within the old location. I was half expecting the often used Hannibal Lecter metaphor of walking around in another restaurant's skin, but they really took the effort to stamp their own identity, with the only fragment of the previous Pig being the exposed wood of the ceiling. And while the tables are in the exact location, it feels entirely new, dominated by that bright blue underlit sign slapped under the bar. Patrons even enter through a different door. The booths are generous, shockingly to the point that the more rotund members of our party had no issue wedging ourselves into place around a table that could easily hold eight. And for some reason, we decided to spend a week's wages here. Not sure why...maybe it had been a while since we'd all been out together and ended up throwing caution to the wind. The alcohol flowed quickly and consistently, not in any way prompted by the unforeseen reunion of my wife with an old friend she hadn't seen since my wife's breakup with her ex. Not. Awkward. At all. I'm sure the sudden ordering of a double shot rum and coke was not at all a consequence of that encounter. It prompted a round of fruity and convoluted concoctions mixing bumu, triple sec, empress, mirtillo, vodka, and various berries (not all in one drink; who do think I am, David Hasselhoff?) After ordering the full order charcuterie, I had considered that we would follow that with a series of smaller appetizers, which I assumed after the wife ordered both the bruschetta and the elk carpaccio. A friend tackled the stuffed yorkie (the pastry, not the dog) while another accepted the hot wings challenge. Ordering just appetizers is a practice I enjoy as it really shows off the talent of the resident-- --Oh, we're all still ordering mains? ...Okay, I didn't see that one coming. I guess that means buffalo chicken pasta for me, top sirloin for the wife (not sure where she's gonna pack that), and a pair of Wagyu beef steaks for my two friends. It's shocking how much different a Wagyu tastes compared to top sirloin. They were both fantastic but in different ways. Both the elk carpaccio and the bruschetta were, admittedly, conventional but a perfect encapsulation to why those two dishes are popular in the first place. If there was any criticism to be had, it laid with the charcuterie. There were two options, a single and a group, but I felt the selection was lacking with the latter with only two meats, two cheese, and a trio of sauces with other condiments. If ordering a group charcuterie, I'd want a few more options. What we got was great; I was just expecting a bit more selection; that's selection, not quantity. I'd have taken a reduction in each if it meant more variety. And that was it, a fantastic--oh wait, dessert? You can't seriously...fine, I guess we're ordering dessert. I could say no, but...of course, I didn't, and there arrived a warm chocolate brownie and a pair of fried ice-cream dishes dusted with cinnamon sugar and resting on a fried bowl sitting on whipped cream. We shared, just FYI, but thank god I wore the big pants. I admit that The Firm is conventional, if not a little predictable. But it's far from humdrum, banal, or lethargic. It plays the notes to perfection, a situation where they play a cover song and end up making it better. The Firm is...well... It's like that song, "Nothing Compares 2U". It's a Prince tune, but it was Sinéad O'Connor that made the song a legend. It's not about who does it first, but who does it better. I just hope The Firm doesn't tear up a picture of the pope in front of me. (Yes, I'm back. What can I say? It's been nearly three years, and I found some time between my three successful Kickstarters, which I only mention for the sake of the haters. Thankfully, new businesses have emerged in the interim, with many unfortunately within the carcasses of failed predecessors. Another reason for my return is to encourage people to support local in this time of division, fear, and ignorance. Know that my goal is to convey positive energy to these struggling restaurants, most of which, like many, don't require my review for validation. The Firm is one such location. )

This is a dining experience very few will match. The interior is classy and clean; a modest amount of tables geared toward great conversation, laughs and enjoyment of the moment. Reservations are recommended although there were still a few tables around the whole time we were there. I ordered the beet ricotta ravioli from the "Fresh Menu" of the day. It's a big, stuffed pasta ... tube covered in rich, unctuous braised lamb. It was a while to wait, but so very worth it. The whole dish was absolutely AMAZING! It was flavorful, decadent and incredible with every bite. I got to try the angel hair pasta and shrimp and it was equally delicious. I was going to skip dessert until I heard the words, "strawberry maple cheesecake." Yes, I caved and it was just sinful; amazing flavor and texture. With the exception of the wait time for our meal, service was 5-stars just on its own. Every attention was paid to make sure glasses were full, dining expectations were met and plates cleared at the end. Truly top drawer service. Prices are a bit mid-to-high on the budget scale. But, for (again) an ultimate dining experience, North 54 will be hard to beat.

Cornerstone is Schrödinger's restaurant. Some of you smirk while others desire an explanation…read more Alas, the word budget compels me to ignore those pleas and continue. Cornerstone neither bad nor good. It is neither ugly nor particularly attractive. It exists in both states simultaneously and taking inspiration from the Copenhagen interpretation, the superposition ends when you walk in and have a meal. The metaphor somewhat breaks down at this point as honestly, what really happens is that the good and the bad meld together into a rather unsatisfactory gray, their ultimate sin. Cornerstone is melancholy. The ironic use of red in places doesn't detract it feeling colorless. It's a stunning shade of gray, but like the depressing trend of recent movies, that may not be the best course of action. Cornerstone doesn't offend the eyes--it's just refuses to color outside the lines (despite the aforementioned limited palate). I have made comparisons before about there being some manufacturing line where a machine extrudes the same pedestrian restaurant that anyone can purchase. I'll take 60 feet of restaurant, please. They roll it out, bring down the cutter, and you walk off with your portion. Cornerstone is the Hyundai Accent of restaurants. You don't need to look further than the menu as proof, lacking any panache or originality. Nachos, chicken tenders, lettuce wraps, burgers, wraps, pizzas. And not even funny names...I mean I hate amusing names for boring dishes but here, nothing, just "stir fry" and "steak bites" and "beef dip." Hold me back. The delivered dishes were equally uninspired. I opted for the Cornerstone burger while my friend ordered the Steak Sandwich. The descriptors were bullets points. "6 oz. Sirloin. Garlic Toast. Fresh cut Fries. Frizzled Onions." My burger saw that simplicity and raised it with "House made Beef Burger, Cheddar Cheese, Mustard, Relish, Cornerstone Sauce." That's not a sales pitch--that's an ingredient list. They can't even be bothered even to sell their dishes. My friend's plate was exactly as listed, basically, take those items and place them on a plate and hand it out. The steak was chewy, and the portion was small, especially for seventeen dollars. Mine was sixteen dollars, and I can say with confirmed certainty that there are better burgers nearby for less. My plate was just a burger lacking elegance, speared with a toothpick, fringed by the soup special, and dignified with a single package of stale saltines sitting slightly off edge, almost forlorn like the fat friend in every romantic comedy. How sophisticated. The burger was good; there's no denying that, but there was nothing setting it apart from any burger you could make with your own two hands. I had a burger from the White Goose food truck that was half this price and included bacon, a $2.50 add-on at Cornerstone. My only other garnish was the napkin. About the only aspect of the décor I thought was worthy of praise was a slightly unbefitting centrally-located wine display sparingly seasoned by some striking bottles. There is also not an overabundance of televisions, meaning this place is inadequate as a sports bar (which is what it replaced). So, given that evidence, we have yet another Moxies clone that is desperately hoping people won't leave the hotel to search for any better. Heaven forbid they walk thirty feet to Karahi King or Crossroads or walk down the street to Twisted Cork. And if customers have a car, forget it. It's not so much I dislike Cornerstone, it just falls into a category of restaurant that is getting larger and larger, ones I am indifferent to. I could not care about this place. My apathy towards Cornerstone removes any reason to visit it compared to the competition surrounding it. Even the donair and poutine joint across the street is more desirable than this. Cornerstone obviously cost a lot of money, but they phoned in a monotonous menu and dishes lacking any originality. This could be expected of a restaurant under a hotel, the need to pander to the largest demographic resulting in such a compromised menu, yet I have seen better restaurants under lesser hotels. Look at Rockford; look at Hummus Brothers. Granted, those two not that much better than Cornerstone, but they are. Food: 2.5/5 Service: 3.5/5 Presentation: 3/5 Value: 2.5/5 Recommendation: 3/5

The food was quite tasty. I was a bit surprised that the Cornerstone Breakfast had a single strip of bacon and single sausage but the overall meal was adequately filling. The poor review then came after my empty plate was cleared. I sat there for over 10 minutes at an empty table with no bill. I tried to flag the waitress down whenever she was in sight to no avail. I watched her clean 3 tables and top up the coffees at the table next to me. Finally close to 15 minutes later I got her attention, got the bill, barely tipped and left.
