    Before Bombshell.
    Sara E.

Since I moved to Michigan, I have been looking for the right fit for a hairstylist. I never had this issue in NY, LA or a smaller town in Missouri. I have two degrees; one in English and one in Communications. I am pretty confident in my ability to communicate. I went to the salon with the hopes of having my roots touched up. I am a natural blonde and it's not a difficult process. In addition to my current hair color, which is a warm honey blonde, I also provided a couple of pictures from my prior hair stylists. I even explained that I have hair that tends to be porous and takes easily and fast to color or highlights. After I was washed, I was horrified. My hair was a deep ash grey/black. I have no idea what happened. She immediately started saying that it was because it was wet. Give me a break, I'm not an idiot. She then proceeded to give me the highest level of highlights on top of my hair. I looked like a skunk after the second wash!! I had white streaks against dark, dark hair. No sign of blonde anywhere. She said, "Don't worry you don't have to pay for it." But, even after going to another salon and paying $160-my hair still sucks!!!! It is SO hard to strip this awful dark color out of my hair even with new highlights, lowlights and toner. I am livid that this is considered a high-end Birmingham salon. I look like I have been dyeing my hair in prison blindfolded. It will be months before my hair does not look horrible. Run from this place! I will be adding a before and picture as proof.

She's so sweet and kind, and the whole atmosphere is just so relaxing and they even offered me tea, great conversation, and a movie while I was there. As always, Tonya made me feel beautiful. I also picked up some trial-size products for my upcoming trip, which I loved. I'll definitely be back--see you soon!

After doing some googling, this location seemed like the best bet. I was able to make an appointment online which was super convenient. They had a bunch of one hour slots to choose from, along with a variety of services. You can get extra add ons like moisturizer, a scalp massage along with a few others. They also have different hair styles to choose from. I went with just a plain old blow out since my hair looks best straight and can be hard to manage. When I got there, I checked in and the whole place is beautifully decorated. I was offered a mimosa, tea, coffee or a water. They were nice enough to run me out some water which was very refreshing. You literally sit in a chair at a bar where your stylist works your hair and you can watch TV while you're at it. The gal who did my hair was super nice and did a fabulous job. She really took the time to make my frizzy hair look great. It took a little while (about an hour) since my hair's a bit much. Overall a fabulous time! While it's not any cheaper then going to a salon, I really enjoyed my time here. I would gladly return as I loved my experience and it was worth every penny.

The first inconvenience of the day was that I got a call around 8 AM for my 1 PM appointment that there was a scheduling error and that the stylist I was working with had a bridal party scheduled and forgot, so I would have to either reschedule or cancel. Totally get understand mistakes happen, we're only human. Unfortunately, I didn't see the voicemail until I woke up an hour later, and when I called they notified me that the 2 alternate times they mentioned I could reschedule to had been filled. The good news was that I was at least able to get an appointment scheduled, however I expressed my concerns that it would be cutting it super close to my event, and they reassured me I would be out of there on time. Alas, I got to my appointment 10 minutes early, and I wasn't seen for almost 30 minutes as they were running behind. The main reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is solely because I actually loved the haircut, regardless of everything else that happened, I got exactly what I wanted and the stylist did a great job of talking everything through before starting. The one thing that really surprised me was how much I disliked the blowout! This salon is almost known for their bouncy blowouts, so I was very surprised to see that by the time I walked to my car (5 minutes) my hair was flat! My hair holds curls/blowouts VERY well, so I'm not sure what happened, but I called the salon notifying them how disappointed I was as I had another event the following day and they let me come back the next day to touch it up (free of charge).

Aidan, my coordinator, was amazing. I walked in not knowing where to start, and he guided me through the entire process with warmth and clarity. He even helped me add my sister-in-law to the schedule the day before the wedding so she wouldn't feel left out. This experience was so much nicer than I even anticipated. Susan and her staff are warm, friendly, and Susan knows from experience how much BC sucks. If you'd like to get a wig, call Susan first. She recommends that clients schedule an appointment; this is definitely necessary! My mom received top notch, one-on-one service from Susan and her wig consultant, Shannon, and the consult and wig selection took us about two hours (not sure if that's average, but if you or your mom is picky, leave some time). They offer high quality synthetic wigs and human hair wigs, all of which are customized to each woman's tastes (and head size). We ended up selecting a human hair wig, which is pricey, but definitely worth the expenditure. We'll head back in two weeks when my mom's hair begins to fall out to have my mom's hair shaved off and the wig styled and fitted. Susan stated that this normally takes about two hours (there's a cute looking restaurant next door - Mae's - that looks nice to chill in while you're waiting). Susan also sells cute hats, skin products and other random products that you never thought you'd need... If you're in the metro-Detroit area, this is definitely worth a visit. Anyway, I rambled long enough, but it's hard to know what to expect so hopefully this helps you. Susan's is just a really nice, calming place. I can't recommend it enough.

I wound up at Susan's after I found out I'd be going Kojak thanks to chemotherapy. My hairdresser…read morerecommended Susan's because she wanted me to look and feel good during treatment, so we made an appointment to find my new hair. We were greeted by Susan herself and ushered into a private room where we talked with Susan and Shannon (the stylist) about how I normally wear my hair, when my treatment would start, and what to expect when my hair would fall out. Susan is a cancer survivor herself and a former oncology nurse, so she's familiar with different chemo drugs and what they'll do to your hair (she told me my hair would fall out on day 15 and dang if she wasn't right). Susan and Shannon talked about the different types of wigs they offer and make recommendations based on your wants/needs and lifestyle. They also make sure you know how to take care of your wig and recommend products that will keep your new hair looking great. Once I picked out my new hair, we set an appointment for my fitting, which happens after your hair falls out, or you shave it off (they will even shave your head if you want). During that appointment, one of the stylists custom fits your wig to your head. This step is totally worth it. Whenever I wear my wig, I get compliments on my haircut and color. People don't realize that it's not my real hair. These wigs are not cheap, but when you consider how much you'll wear it and how much money you won't be spending on haircuts and styling products, it's really worth the investment. The personalized service and sensitivity of the staff really makes Susan's a unique place. I never felt uncomfortable or embarrassed and I got an awesome wig that makes having cancer suck just a little bit less.
