A wide range of lagers is partially compensated by three slightly less prominent hand pulls London Pride, Charles Wells' Bombardier and Beowulf's Hurricane. An order for a spritzer resulted in an excellent large glass of sauvignon blanc and, for once, no question about do you want soda or lemonade always a bad start to a drinking experience. We had been warned by friends that the steak and kidney pudding sells out early and it had. Starters of prawn & crayfish cocktail, goats cheese wontons and ham hock terrine were all pronounced tasty and hearty and would suffice for some as a light lunch. The mains of beer-battered haddock, red Thai chicken curry and a substitute steak and kidney pie were most satisfactory. The service was good and the price came out at just over £20 per head. Being near the holidays; folks seemed dressed up but casual attire seemed ok too. The menu choices were varied and all the choices were nicely paired with good sides. I ordered the chicken curry (English, right.) and it was delicious. Everyone at our large table seemed happy with the meals. I drank my first English bitters and it was very enjoyable. It reminded me of American home brew which is to say more interesting than Bud or miller beer but not as fizzy as beer in general. I think it was called "Crazen". I had what I believe to be an English dessert; a kind of raspberry cobbler. Hit the spot for a great meal. Very good service and the crowd was lively. Room acoustics were a little tough for me but they always are.
