I am not kidding when I say every class here will kick your butt. Such a good workout and instructors are amazing. I can't remember any names but I have not had a bad one. They all take time to explain the moves to you and totally help you modify if some of the moves are difficult. Music is amazing too and lockers up front are clean. Front staff is super nice too. read more

I've came here a couple of times as a ClassPass member. I usually take the Friday afternoon classes because that's usually the time that works for me. The equipment and the places are pretty client and new-like. Yes, as mentioned by everyone, parking is not very easy or cheap. One hour parking is $3, 2025 rate. I usually too lazy to try to find side street/ residential street parking. There's always a bit of traffic, getting to the street because its a popular street. Despite the parking issue, traffic, I like the class and the instructors. On top of that, the credit for the class is reasonable. read more

Love the classes and great equipment. It loses a star because the water fountain has been out of service and the locker doors fall off then don't get fixed. For $350 a month they need the location to be in top shape at the least. read more

I've been a fan of BodyRok for years--formerly a member at the Mission, SF studio and now an occasional drop-in at the Oakland location. But after my recent visit, I'm genuinely disturbed and won't be returning. I took the 12pm class and arrived early. No one at check-in mentioned anything about grip socks being required, and this wasn't a rule when I was previously a member. Mid-class, a woman supervising the instructor interrupted my workout to tell me I needed socks. I apologized and explained I hadn't known. A few minutes later, she handed me a pair with a rude, "Next time, bring your own." Only after class--as I was leaving--the front desk asked me to return them. That's when I found out they were from the lost and found. Yes, I was given someone else's used socks to wear during class without being told. I emailed the studio, expecting a sincere apology and acknowledgment of how unacceptable this was. Instead, I received a generic response saying they "appreciate constructive criticism" and that signage is posted in the studio. No acknowledgment of the unsanitary handling. No ownership. No apology for handing me used socks. Not even a follow-up from a manager. This wasn't just a miscommunication--it was embarrassing, disrespectful, and gross. Offering me a chance to purchase clean socks would've been the professional and hygienic thing to do. If this is how they treat former members and paying guests, it's clear BodyRok Oakland is more concerned with enforcing policy than respecting people. Extremely disappointing. read more

This was my first experience with reformer Pilates and I really wanted to love it! I do mat Pilates on a regular basis, but social media has convinced me to try reformer. Upon getting to the studio, it sucks that I had to pay for parking- but that's Oakland for you! The studio itself was not well taken care of, especially considering the price. The bathroom was outdated and the back area was closed off with visible messes scattered around. There were not many amenities you'd expect for such a pricey workout studio. The instructor really did not bring as much enthusiasm as group fitness instructors normally do. The music was very quiet , so the class seemed to drag on. The instructors cues were not very clear and I noticed many others around me looking around for direction. We could have really used her energy to power us through the class, but it wasn't there. For Pilates, I expected much more of a challenge. By the end of the FORTY MINUTE class, I was able to do much more. I thought I may have been thrown off as it was my first ever reformer experience, but after connecting with some regulars after class, they agreed that the class was not great. Reformer Pilates is definitely a luxury workout experience and I was so excited to support one of the only studios in the Bay Area. After this class, I'm not convinced the investment is worth it. I will stick to my Move with Nicole videos on YouTube! read more

Came back from a long trip and woke up super early at 5am. I checked my classpass and there was a 6AM class with Mel- instead of going back to sleep I decided to take this class because one of my goals this year is to be better and take care of myself physically lol. So anyway- I've taken pilates classes in the past, a handful of BodyRok classes but it was my very first time in this studio. It was nice and clean inside. They have digital lockers. I thought, you know... yeah "easy, slow motion movements"... NOPE! Mel said you thought... right on the dot of time we went straight into it *PAIN* I was really warm within 5 minutes and the inside of the studio is actually well ventilated so I was like okay.... and there were a lot of new movements that I have not done in past pilates classes so I was *confused* at 6am lol. Mel was really kind and kept coming up to me to fix my posture and give me pointers which I appreciated (sorry Mel and thank you) at some point in class my body had given up as my mind wanted to push through but my body was cramping and in pain. Needless to say it was an ab and leg day- somehow my whole body was sore for the next 2 days including my lats and I have no clue how. I will definitely visit again and will need to prep my body the night before with some potassium and hydration for morning workouts because I am an evening girly. read more

I first started at BodyRok through ClassPass but then found a great one month unlimited deal and went 24 times in the month of August! I personally had a very good time coming here. I see some reviews mentioning parking but there's always a lot of parking at the Lakeshore/Trader Joes lot, it gets busy on weekends but that's to be expected so just plan ahead and don't be late when you know you need to account for extra parking time in this area. This isn't the fault of the studio, it's to be expected when the location is in a big city/popular neighborhood that gets lots of traffic. Loved the instructors overall, some classes were more challenging than others, some more upbeat, etc. I do think some instructors need to do a better job at helping people who are struggling. I would sometimes see people next to me struggling or doing a move wrong/dangerously and the instructor saw and didn't help them make adjustments. Something to improve on definitely. My favorite instructors are Ari and Sonialena, they were always very helpful and made sure to give us adjustments if needed and always felt very supported throughout class. Would recommend their classes! I also had Katie (I think that's her name) who recently came from the north bay location? Her classes were tough and gave me a great workout! She's also very motivating and helps us push through till the end haha Overall I had a good experience and would recommend this place. Try it for yourself and decide if you like it or not. Also if you're new I'd recommend the basics class first to get yourself acquainted with everything and come early to get instructions if you're new. It took me a few classes to get a hang of things and I will say I toned, lost a little weight, and got so much stronger in the month of August and it was thanks to the wonderful instructors I had here. Also front desk staff are very nice as well. read more

scheduled a class with a friend. Since I am new to taking this type of class I booked a station next to my friend to feel more comfortable. However , upon arriving , my station was occupied by someone else. I informed the instructor who then lead me to the receptionist. I informed the receptionist of the same thing and she just instructed me to take the spot but did not know it was already taken. I told her someone was already there and she looked in her computer and stated oh it seems like she booked for that station too . I mentioned that I booked specifically since I came with a friend. She didn't seem to care much , all she said was well do you want me go tell her to move but she booked for it too or did you want to just go since the class started? I did tell her yes if you can you go tell her but she asked "are you sure since the class is starting"and at that point I just walked into the class. All in all I think it was just not really acceptable. Sent an email and so far have not heard any response yet read more

Signed up for their monthly trial membership which allows you to take 1 class a day. After 3 straight days, I've decided to give my body some rest time and recovery! Very sore from the workouts. I definitely feel it in my core. I like using the pulley system and the fact that you work out many body parts in 45 minutes! It's good to get to class a little earlier to stretch and stake out a machine. Nice cubby lockers in front that lock. read more

Let me start with, I walked in 2 minutes late. Class was at 7:10 and I was on my reformer at 7:12. The instructor did not bother to look at me, acknowledge me, or walk near my reformer. Unfortunate because the front desk girl was so kind and welcoming but Kasandra was definitely underwhelming. I totally get that I walked in late, but a simple smile or acknowledgment would've been nice considering this is my first time at this establishment. She checked-in with other girls in the room but did not once check-in on me. I was visibly looking around confused and did not know what to do. The woman next to me even noticed how confused I was and went out of her way to help me. The fact that a guest had to help me because the instructor won't is crazy. I was 2 minutes late. Get off your high horse Kasandra, you teach pilates. Chill. She knew she was intentionally not acknowledging me because the second I came out to let the front desk know about my unpleasant experience she immediately came out to see what I saying. This place is OK if you can't afford anything else. They definitely hire a lot of brand new Pilates instructors who are still learning their craft, and I understand that that is necessary, but that is what you get. A lot of the time the sound is too loud and you can't hear what the instructor is saying. There are a few instructors that are great, however, that are more than worth their salt and definitely worth taking classes from ~ Sonialena, Cat, and Anisa are all incredible teachers and go above and beyond to make sure everybody gets a great and challenging workout that is appropriate for their skill level. I definitely stayed a member of this place for as long as I did because of those particular instructors. So yeah, overall not terrible but not the best. read more

Fine facility, parking is a non-issue if you plan well. But the instructor, Shannon, is in the wrong profession. I've never come across such a [b]itchy instructor before. She was not good at instruction, but moreover was rude in correcting you. Difficult to describe but as an example, she was unclear about varying weights (ie didn't specify we need to change), then was like "no we're on single yellow now!" Or in having us turn a specific direction, she was, again, unclear in instruction and then got short with the gal next to me "no. Turn around. TURN AROUND!" So rudely the gal and I changed aghast looks. Shannon, girl. Look for a job at which you're better-suited. Though you may be hard pressed to find anything with that attitude. I may give another instructor a try, but not sure the exercise / experience is worth the price tag. read more

I took a class with Caroline via Kaiser's ClassPass program, and I had a great experience! The only other exercise I do currently is daily walking x2 around the lake & I'm not especially fit right now, so I was worried that the class would be too hard or intimidating. I've never done Pilates, barre, or body rock before, although I think I have at least average balance and strength. It was a tough workout for me and I think there will be a bit of a learning curve to perform as well as everyone else in the class, BUT Caroline was very kind and explained how to do different modifications. The other people in the class also seemed very welcoming and kind! I didn't get any weird looks from people as I had I take breaks/use mods, as I have at other gyms. I am still trying to take COVID precautions and I appreciated that they required proof of vaccination. Some class members wore masks and some didn't; I felt safe enough to not wear mine (it was a decently large room with space between people). I definitely plan on coming back & would recommend this to others! I'm excited to get stronger and improve my health :) read more

I started taking classes here a year ago and I've fallen in love ever since. After my first month I decided to commit to a monthly membership and it's been one of the best decisions I've made for my physical health. I feel so strong in my body and I can see the physical changes that these workouts have made on me. I take classes at this location and also in Berkeley. The studios are always clean and all of the staff have been warm and friendly. Some of my favorite instructors include: Iyanna, Anisa, Vanessa, Shannon, and Caroline. The front desk staff, especially Elizabeth, are all phenomenal! I highly recommend you give Bodyrok a chance if you haven't already :) read more

Honestly - I don't know why the other reviews aren't raving about this place! I absolutely love BodyRok Oakland. Having been to the Berkeley location as well as a SF location, I consider myself decently experienced with BodyRok. The Oakland studio is absolutely stunning. Although a bit smaller than the Berkeley location, the high ceilings and beautiful natural light give it a very open and spacious vibe. I personally also like having only 1 row of reformers because then every individual has a mirror directly in front of them. Staff at Oakland's studio is some of the same people from Berkeley - all very nice and welcoming. Especially Caroline, she a total Pilates expert, provides great motivation when teaching, and her kind nature makes this an ideal spot for learning Pilates. She was super welcoming and really helped me improve my form with some moves. BodyRok is such an effective and enjoyable workout. And with a juice bar down the street, this location is so ideal! Definitely will be coming back soon. read more

Not real pilates. what I like about Pilates is slow. Intentional movements with a focus on form. This felt like some corporate power. Pilates place. the music is on too loud, the little microphones they use aren't loud enough to hear over the music. And they switch between movements too fast there's none of the form focused work that happens in real Pilates. read more

DON'T LEAVE YOUR STUFF IN THE LOCKERS REGARDLESS OF LOCKING IT OR NOT. The front desk is not going to watch the area or make sure that the people who come in are actually there for a class or not. Writing this review mainly to balance the first one out. This location is clean and spacious with higher ceilings than the SF FiDi BodyRok location. If you've never been to this location before you will have to fill forms out, so leave time for that before class. Disclaimer: I never visited the previous iteration of this studio and am not very experienced in Pilates, but I had been to a few reformer classes (and one BodyRok branded class) before my first visit to this location. The class itself was only about half full, which provided for ample personal attention, correction, and encouragement from the instructor. As a relative beginner, I appreciated that the class was truly all-levels, while my more experienced classmates were able to challenge themselves with different upleveling options that the instructor presented. Based on the number of machines in class, it seems like there will always be an abundance of lockers. The shower situation did seem lacking (one shower stall was full of boxes/supplies, and the stalls are only separated by curtains from the co/ed locker area), but I generally don't need to shower immediately after these classes and don't personally find this aspect important. Last thing to note is that it was pretty darn cold in the building, so I recommend layering up for class. Overall I enjoyed class here and will be returning semi-regularly with my ClassPass credits. Thanks for a good first experience! read more

I'm writing this bc of how awful my experience was at BodyRok in Oakland . I gave myself plenty of time to get to this location unfortunately there was absolutely no parking which resulted in me parking pretty far away from this location . It took me 15 mins to RUN to the body rock facility 4 mins late . Even tho there were empty reformer machines I was denied the class , I explained I traveled far to come to this location , no parking , and had to get a sitter to do this class. I pay almost $100 to do these classes and to be denied access bc of a few mins late is appalling. The instructor was snooty and un kind . read more

Three strikes and you're out. This newly converted BodyRok studio can't seem to get rid of its baggage from the past. In its prior incarnation as Pilates Now, the studio offered more traditional pilates classes. About a month ago, it was reopened as BodyRok, a brand that that a handful of other locations in SF and the East Bay. Having been a frequent BodyRok client for several years at their Mission, Berkeley, and FiDi locations, I was pretty excited to hear about this opening. I've always enjoyed the BodyRok style of workout, which is extremely similar to Lagree. On my first visit to the Oakland BodyRok location, the studio had just swapped over and the signature BodyRok machines had not arrived yet. I got a less than optimal workout on the old machines that were not as challenging. I didn't break a sweat. I figured I'd give it another chance after the new machines arrived. My second class was with Willow, who was terrible. It felt more like stretching and again, I didn't sweat at all. Her cues and moves had not adapted at all to the new BodyRok style. For BodyRok, I expect to be pushed and "burn out" each area (such as left leg) before moving onto the next. The way she taught was to do each exercise with the left leg and then immediately move to the right leg, which is ineffective. She also did not try to slow us down; in BodyRok style pilates, each move should be 4 counts or slower. While her method may have worked before for Pilates Now, it needs to change. I chalked the second bad experience to a bad instructor so I came a third time to class with Luiza. Luiza was definitely better than Willow but alas, it ended in another disappointing workout. So disappointing in fact, that 5 hours later on the same day, I went to BodyRok Berkeley to do a second workout because I felt nothing at all after the first. While it may have made it easier to open up a RodyRok where an old pilates studio already existed, the rebranded location simply inherited old instructors who have not adapted to the BodyRok brand. The way these instructors teach would not fly at all at any other BodyRok locations. I hope they make some changes soon and if that happens I might give it another chance. Until then, if you're looking for a real workout, I recommend BodyRok in Berkeley, X-Core nearby and on Piedmont, Core Society Fitness in Emeryville, or Bold in Berkeley. read more

This gym was recommended by Chelsea H. I tried it for one month, and then ended up going for another month. Its clean, organized, and the instructors are positive and helpful. Great experience! Not very welcoming. Girl at the front desk seemed detached/uninterested. It was my first time at this studio (I was using classpass). The room is small so class size is limited. Instructor introduced herself but that was the only interaction I had with her for duration of session. She did not provide me any corrections, modifications, or specialized instruction. Workout was decent - focused on arms and abs. Definitely felt sore, but wasn't a sweating/exhausted kind of workout. There was no music. It was not very upbeat. Kind of bland. I would give the studio another shot in hopes of meeting a more enthusiastic, welcoming instructor. But I've been to many other workout studios in the area that are much more welcoming. read more

This is my FAVORITE gym! The structure of the classes are 40 minutes of intense workout. The workouts push you to where you feel accomplished and the trainers are friendly as well as experienced. I especially love the clean welcoming environment of the studio. They have showers, lockers, AC, towels and versatile classes (TRX, Jump board, specific body part classes) so it never gets mundane or boring. I've recommended this studio to all my friends and family. Bonus points is the location is super accessible as their is a free parking structure across the street. The owner Caroline does her absolute best to make sure everyone's concerns are heard and respected. Thank you team BodyRok for helping me with my fitness and helping me become stronger! read more

They desperately need a new receptionist. Trina, poor thing knows nothing about customer service. She told me I was late with an attitude and told me I had to walk in to ask the teacher if I could join the class. I am a pure beginner and the class was not catered to beginners which I think should be stated in the class description. It's also incredibly overpriced. read more

I've been a regular here since 2014 through its various incarnations and owners. It has basically had the same layout and class schedule, but the recent typical class is shorter (40 minutes) and more intense. The machine is based on a pilates reformer, but is more like a Lagree machine, with an additional back platform and pulley system. The staff and instructors are always helpful and friendly, but the lockers are not always in working order (my only issue). Also, most of the patrons are female and the locker room area is coed though not obviously so, so I think men might feel a bit awkward. However, there are cubbies available to leave shoes/keys, etc outside of the locker area, so there are options. Pilates workouts seem to have more of an appeal to women, but Joseph Pilates was a man and developed this workout in part to rehabilitate injured WW1 soldiers. The studio is closed at the moment due to Covid19, but when it reopens, I recommend it highly to anyone looking for an intense, safe, strength centered workout. read more
