After this experience, I will never join a gym again…read more
I went to the gym in person to cancel my membership, as instructed. After completing the cancellation form, I asked for a copy. The staff member assured me he would email it to me. He also informed me that because I had missed the cancellation deadline, I would have to pay for one additional month. I wasn't thrilled, but I figured, "What's one more month?" Little did I know, this would turn into a six-month nightmare.
The month after what I thought would be my final payment, I noticed another charge on my account. I called the gym, explained the mistake, and was told someone would call me back. They never did.
A couple of weeks later, I called again. A woman answered and eventually called me back, explaining that she couldn't find the footage or the cancellation document I had signed. She assured me that my membership had been cancelled and that I shouldn't expect any further charges. When I described the employee who had helped me as a younger, blonde guy with a smaller frame, she said that would explain why she couldn't find the form.
Another month passed, and I was charged AGAIN. I called, explained the situation, and was once again told someone would look into it and call me back. Sometimes nobody called. Other times, staff assured me the membership had been cancelled and that I had nothing to worry about. Yet the charges continued.
Today, I called again, beyond frustrated that this has been going on for SIX MONTHS. Throughout this ordeal, staff members have repeatedly promised to help, but the issue remains unresolved.
When I finally spoke with the manager, he told me that "this never happens," despite multiple online reviews describing similar experiences. He then suggested that I was partly to blame for allowing this to continue for six months without speaking up, claiming he had never been made aware of the issue.
I explained that I HAD spoken up. I had called repeatedly, explained the situation to multiple employees, and followed their instructions. Each time, I was assured that my membership had been cancelled and the issue would be resolved.
The manager then told me he couldn't simply refund six months of charges. Apparently, I could cancel my membership now, but I would have to pay for yet another month.
Let that sink in. After repeatedly attempting to cancel my membership, being assured it was cancelled, and continuing to get charged because the gym apparently couldn't locate my cancellation paperwork, I was told I would have to pay AGAIN to end this.
Essentially, I'm being asked to pay more money because the gym's staff failed to properly process my cancellation and resolve the issue, despite my repeated attempts to address it.
If you plan on cancelling your membership here, I strongly recommend taking precautions:
1. Document everything. Photograph every document you sign and note the name or description of the employee assisting you.
2. Keep written records. Record the date and time of your cancellation, save all emails and messages, and insist on written confirmation before leaving.
3. Follow up in writing. Don't rely on verbal promises. Get confirmation that your membership has been cancelled and keep a copy.
4. Monitor your bank statements. Watch for charges after cancellation and contact your bank if you need to dispute them.
After reading other reviews, I've noticed what appears to be a recurring pattern of complaints:
1. You're required to cancel in person, and staff promise to email you a copy of the paperwork.
2. You're told you must pay for an additional month.
3. When you're charged again, the gym claims it can't find your signed cancellation form or footage of you entering the building.
4. You call to ask what happened, and staff promise to investigate and call you back.
5. They either never call back or claim the membership has been cancelled and they'll discuss a refund with the manager.
6. No refund comes, the charges continue, and the cycle repeats.
Six months. Multiple phone calls. Multiple promises. No resolution.
The most frustrating part isn't just the money; it's the complete lack of accountability. I followed the cancellation procedure, repeatedly contacted staff when charges continued, and trusted their assurances that the issue had been resolved. Instead of taking responsibility, management blamed me for a problem I had been actively trying to resolve.
Cancelling a gym membership should not be this difficult. Based on my experience, I strongly advise anyone considering this gym to think twice. If you already have a membership and plan to cancel, document absolutely everything and get written confirmation. Don't make the mistake of relying on their word alone.
