This is such a quaint "general purpose" store, decent selection of groceries, necessities for the locals (livestock feed, etc) and a pleasant little gift area with a nice range of local flavor. We wanted the Hatch Chile burger... and to my delight they were willing to make with Turkey rather than beef. Coolest part was, when I said it would be "to go" because we were traveling with our dog, the man suggested I bring her in! There was a dining area off to the side and not only was our dog welcome, but the chef came over and fed her a biscuit! Bodes is the real deal. Don't miss it. read more

Stopped in Bode's GS yesterday, a busy Saturday morning, on the rode to the Echo Amphitheater....our first time ever in this little gem of a store on a well traveled road. We were met at the door by a masked employee who was monitoring customer volume, making sure store was not over crowed. He was very courteous and welcoming. Our party of four spent roughly 15 minutes or so browsing....seemed to have all of the essentials. Snacks. Beverages. Even with limits on the number of customers allowed inside it felt crowded but that's me being subjective. Never really felt I was too close to anyone. Checking out was very quick. Despite having many customers my cashier was very personable. Only wish they had a better stock of their trademark Bode's short sleeve tees (Men's Large) in stock....cashier promised additional stock expected within a few days....giving me a good reason to return. read more

Driving through Abiquiu NM up U.S. 84, we stopped at BODE'S GENERAL STORE for lunch - and the food was Really Good! My wife ordered the Grilled 3-Cheese Sandwich with a side of French Fries. I ordered the Corned Beef Reuben with a side Salad. Both were very tasty and delicious - especially the crispy French Fries. The Reuben was perfectly balanced with corned beef, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing - very mouth-watering! Next time, I'll want the Green Chile Cheeseburger with French Fries, and try their Beer-on-Tap. After lunch, we enjoyed browsing around the Store to discover its impressive merchandise variety - everything from hot-sandwiches-to-go, beer and wine, camp cooking gear, fishing supplies, knives & axes, animal traps, rain ponchos & mosquito repellent, to an impressive array of fresh vegetables and snacks. Oh for the good old days when Mr. Bode ran his store with grace, humor and stocked the shelves with real food. If you're on your way to Abiquiu lake or Ghost Ranch Bode's store is still convenient, if expensive. You can purchase wonderful enamel ware pots and dishes for your camping experience or chose from a great selection of cards to let everyone at home know what a great time you're having. The food selection is much bigger than other convenience stores. The locals still remember a time, just a few years ago, when we could ride our horse out to Bode's and have an organic meal with good conversation. read more

Don't let the name fool you because this store has the most amazingly delicious food. The cheeseburger is juicy, yummy and chocked full of fresh veggies including green chile peppers. My favorite is the grilled cheese sandwich toasted crunchy to the bite and full of yummy, gooey-cheeses ie, (Boars head) cheddar, muenster and pepper jack and topped off with Boars head bacon on sour dough bread. A nice assortment of wine, beer and sodas are at hand. Fresh veggies for sale as well if your feeling healthy. They bake fresh, delicious pastries, pies, muffins and cookies from scratch daily. First: Accept Bode's for what it is... a slice of (vanishing) northern New Mexico. As a one-time city slicker I appreciate the down-home vibe, people watching and the best red chile breakfast burrito anywhere in NM. The green chile cheeseburger rates right up there. You don't stop at Bode's for gourmet fine dining... just real (good) food prepared very well and at a great price. Just barely made it here before they closed at 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon. ordered the green chile cheeseburger and tater tots. This burger is huge! You could feed a family of four between the burger and the mountain of tots. My wife enjoyed the blood orange iced tea and the food was delicious! Very glad we went 30 miles out of our way to get these burgers. Looking forward to the next visit. read more

The only place to stop in Abiquiu...so good. I had the HUGE green chile cheeseburger with tots & it was on point. They were a bit busy when we were there but it was well worth the wait. Only store around but really good nonetheless. Very crowded on a holiday weekend--people going to the lake I guess. We were never able to eat here, the restaurant always seemed to be closed when we came by. Still they had some hot meals to go which were actually good. We got a roast chicken and fresh tortillas and made wraps at our Airbnb. They also had green chile mac n cheese which the kids did not like but I did. Even the wrapped burgers were pretty good. We also got a slice of pie and some cookies--disappeared quickly so they must have been good. All kinds of stuff packed into this store! Very well curated. read more

My parents live in Abiquiu and I just LOVE going to Bode's each time that I go home to visit. They've got everything under the sun - hand crafted soaps, locally brewed beer, fishing poles and bait, cast iron skillets, dog biscuits, fresh produce... I mean you NAME IT - they've got it! We still love Bode's and I will always go there when I'm passing through, but as another hidden "not recommended" review stated, something is missing. I think Bode's was more of a fully functioning grocery in the not-too-distant past. I guess I miss healthy food on the shelves and the baby chicks in the springtime. There are more souvenirs and less space for other things, so it feels less complete and Amazing like it used to. On the up-side, there seems to be more focus on good things to order from the deli than there has been in recent years and they have a good selection of postcards and greeting cards. read more

Found this place because we were getting low on gas during a motorcycle trip - rolled in and thought - meh another gas station place - HA! foolish mid-westerners! this place was rocking! it was 10:30 a.m. but so what we stopped for lunch - the philly cheese steak was their own concoction and yummy spicy. The burger with green chili - did I really eat it all? Tater Tots were perfect - the pre-made enchiladas were fantastic. The vegetarian in the group found something to eat and we all dove in on the hand made soaps and other organic items. Best purchase the Rum in a head shrunk bottle - the bottle made it home to Chicago... the rum kept us happy all trip. Service was fun and engaging. A MUST Stop! read more

This is a great local rest stop, gas station, relatively good fast food and local general store / market. It's the best in town.

I love Bode's !!! It is a small town Market with all the charm that goes with that. All of the workers are always friendly and I love that. Bode's is a pretty decent place, but Rachel C's review is a bit inaccurate in a number of ways. For one thing, the next nearest store is only 2 miles east on U.S. 84. And Española, and it's Wal-mart is only about 22 miles from Bode's. Also, Bode's is most certainly open on Sundays. And there isn't a wood stove or a fireplace. However, the rest of the review is pretty accurate. They offer a pretty broad range of items, with a focus on groceries and snacks. They have a deli, which has excellent food from opening to around 3pm. They sell alcohol, with a pretty decent beer selection. And yes, they do have a bunch of old guys sitting around and swapping fish tales. Speaking of which, they sell fishing licenses, and have a small selection of bait and tackle, including live bait when it's in season. The main problem with the place is the prices. They can be a bit high for some items. However, if you factor in the cost of gas to drive into town, it's pretty much a wash. Overall, not a bad place to stock up. And the food is damn good. read more

Dinner at Bode's is a must on Friday and Saturday nights 5:00pm-7:15pm! The food was excellent - everything is fresh and made from scratch, including the salad dressing. We started off with the guacamole, salsa and chips (each item was top-notch), followed by the salmon and ribs (tender, flavorful and delicious), and finished it off with house made flan and strawberries. The local flavors, not only in the great food, but also the friendly locals who filled the Flamingo Room, offer an authentic taste of this special part of New Mexico. Service was warm, professional, fast and inviting. Our server, Aimee, is a doll! She alone makes it worth a visit to Bode's. We also had the pleasure of meeting the manager, Bob, and owner, Dennis, who took time to talk with us and made us feel right at home. Confusing set up-- you go in and then choose your food and then pay and then eat. Hard to know that's the way it works but once you figure it out you're fine. We chose two of their excellent pork tamales that are hidden in the large silver container near the fridges. You plop them onto your own cardboard "boat" and eat up. They were a good option in the land of hardly-anything-to-eat in this part of the country. You can also stock up on fruits and "minnows" for fishing (ha!). read more

Service was a bit slow but given the local flavor you kind of expect it as you walk in the pre made breakfast burritos were probably good and I definitely would have gotten one of we were passing through in the morning. I eat here often when returning from the lake. I have yet to get a burger that is not overdone. Also, less green chile that's tastier would be an improvement, unless you enjoy soggy, sloppy buns. The fries are always hot and fresh. I recommend the green chile philly and when they have it, the cuban. While visiting Ojo Caliente we were looking for some good food to eat. The WONDERFUL owner of the hotel we were staying at (Taos Trails Inn) recommended to take the "short" ride (about 35 mins) to Abiquiu and eat at Bode's. We were very hesitant at first but were bored so we gave it a shot. It was SO GOOD! The store itself is quite cool, selling a solid local microbrew, Monks' (recommend trying!). We got the Chili burger and green chili fries. They were just amazing!! GREAT FOOD and really solid price (whatd you expect for a gas station in price but not quality!!). One thing we didnt do but wish we did was take the food to go (ambiance isnt amazing at Bode's) and drive down another 10 mins to the lake and eat while looking out over an amazing view (sunset is especially amazing!). Also, Ghost Ranch is just another 15 mins from the lake and is worth checking out if you got the time! So basically, if you are in the area (and that includes Ojo Caliente!!) it is a must!! You will not regret it. read more
