Price gouging is real - i got an OUTRAGEOUS quote of $1400 JUST to add two hinges to my exterior door...pretty basic stuff. Gave the reasoning of taking off door, cutting in new hinges and rehanging the door, balancing and leveling...the typical stuff that ANY professional would do. Gave the song and dance thats not something we specialize in - okay, then just say you cant do it and not send me a ridiculous estimate. Had three other bids from the Angie's list website (you know, vetted professional), with the top estimate being $300. Which sounds fair for the two-three hour job. Sadly, someone elderly or inexperienced with normal home repairs would have probably gone for it based on their long standing reputation - well that shouldn't be the bases to take advantage of people. Had to hire these guys to come out and replace the lock and coin system on a laundry machine. The washer lock was vandalized in an attempt to steal quarters and the crook couldn't get in, only problem was neither could anyone else after he was done trying. They technically a B&B had to bring out some special equipment but they got the job done and gave me all the coins that were trapped in the old box. What really impressed me was the attention to detail - without my asking, they matched the key head shape and color, and when they gave me the keys, they put the original keys in the opposite direction from the copies so I could tell them apart. The employee also preemptively advised me that the copies of the mailbox key may not work properly because the original key was thinner than a standard mailbox key, but he said to come back if I had any problems and he would redo them at no charge. I had a really great experience with Bode & Bode. I needed a safe removed that was left by the previous tenant without the code. I reached out to more than one locksmith without being able to get anyone to commit to coming out and taking the safe out (one of the other locksmiths even ghosted me when they said they would show up). By dumb luck I found myself locked out of my house. Bode & Bode sent a technician in a very reasonable amount of time. The technician was unable to pick the lock (it's rarely used and very old and oxidized-- I usually just rely on the deadbolt) but drilled the cylinder neatly and cleanly, extracting it with no damage to the doorknob. I have a Schlage keyless entry deadbolt on my front door and it stopped working. I really wanted to get it fixed instead of replacing it. I got burned by the first lock smith company I called -- the dispatch folks are nice but the actual locksmith was awkward and useless. He called three times before he showed up -- two hours late. When he finally arrived, he didn't seem to know how to fix it or have the tools to do the job. I basically paid $30 for him to say he couldn't help me! Called to have them check/troubleshoot my downstairs patio door lock since the deadbolt was not engaging with and the handle was loose. A locksmith came and futzed around and made the lock work (temporarily). Despite calling them in advance for an appointment and being a local locksmith, I was charged a $50 travel fee beyond the actual fee for repair, since inexplicably they sent me a guy from Tracy. Bode & Bode rekeyed the locks in my new place, but charged significantly more than I had paid for this kind of work a year ago. The key they gave me said "Do Not Duplicate" on it. Home Depot refused to copy it and it wouldn't work in a self rekey kiosk. Bode offered to make a copy, but wanted to charge for it. They finally agreed to do it for free after a few days, but then wanted proof of residence. They get the job done, but are frustrating to deal with, at least from my experience. With what they charge I would have expected better customer service. read more
