I stopped at Boccato for lunch and overall it was ok.
Truth be told, I had my heart set on eating at another establishment, but when I arrived it was closed. So I had to go elsewhere. I remembered Boccato from when I was at the Horticulture Building in Lansdowne Park and recalled that they had crepes. I love crepes, so I headed over as it wasn't too far away.
When I arrived, it looked like they only had sweet crepes. I asked the nice man who greeted me if they had savoury crepes and he said they had cheese crepes. I wanted something a bit more exciting than a plain crepe with cheese. The menu displayed on the wall was only desserts and drinks so I asked him if they had a food menu, he said they had a ham, cheese, lettuce and mayo panini. So I opted for than but without mayo. It was $7.99 plus tax.
When it arrived, it was actually a wrap, but I like wraps too, so no big deal. It was essentially a pita with thin deli smoked ham, shredded iceberg lettuce and shredded marble cheese, pressed in a grill. It tasted good, but it was something I could have easily made at home. It was big though, so points for that ;)
After my wrap, I decided to get a scoop of their gelato since it looked like their specialty was desserts and not savoury foods. I asked what flavour "melassa" was and he said molasses. He said melassa and halwa were very popular and he gave me a sample of both. They were good, but a bit too sweet for me, so I went with a scoop of pistachio instead. It was $5 and rather small, but it tasted good. It was light and airy and not too sweet nor too rich. The pistachio flavour wasn't that intense though.
The man serving me was very nice and friendly. The cafe is very pretty inside with a lot of character. It would be a lovely place to sit and chat with friends.
I think Boccato is more of a dessert or coffee/tea place, and it's strengths are the decor and environment and also the location. They have some outside seating, and you're right in the heart of Lansdowne Park. I would consider going back for some dessert crepes. read more
