When we were kids, we frequented a SoCal bait shop, wherein worked a very strange guy who we were convinced was eating the bait on a regular basis. It seems that in Isleton, there is a bait and tackle shop where this sort of behavior is encouraged. Many folks visit this shop to buy live crayfish by the pound for crawdad boils and such. The little freshwater lobsters are pretty tasty, with a sweet little bite of meat in their tails. They also make great catfish bait, but why not cut out the middle of that transaction and just eat the little critters? Bob's store sign boasts that he is "The Master Baiter," an honorific I can only imagine draws more than a few curious customers to The tiny town of Isleton. Inside the store, there is a modest selection of tackle-- hooks, sinkers, terminal tackle, line-- and several tanks, coolers, and freezers here and there containing assorted love and frozen bait. The nice lady who helped me with my purchase suggested I was a little late in the season for strippers, and aside from one just-legal fish I caught on the first day, she wasn't wrong-- dozens of small shaker fish was about all we caught. Still had fun exploring the Delta. Not much out here but River interests, anyway. But it is a beautiful part of California, and one everybody should experience in their lifetime. read more

Well, Bob sold the place and moved on. The man and wife that bought it still run a great bait and supply shop. Also you can buy fresh crawdads (crayfish, mud bugs) for your crab boil or fish fries. I liked this guy. He loves the community and drives a long way to keep the place running. When I'm in the area it's always nice to drop in and get my supplies. And remember. There are 2 types of mud bugs. Blue and red. The blue are premium. I recommend you call ahead and order some for him to hold. Enjoy the river, the views, and the wonderful lil town of Isleton. read more

Bob's deserves a real review, because he is in fact.... THE MASTER BAITER! (The name of the shop is the actual reason we went to Isleton to fish.) We rolled into the small town of Isleton at about 10:30am this morning, and off to Bob's we went. I managed to pick up from braided spectra line for about 30% less than what is charged in SF, along with some great Senkos. Since we didn't know the area, we figured let's talk to Bob and find out where to go... Then he proved, he is IN FACT, THE MASTER BAITER. He told us exactly where to go, exactly what bait to use, exactly how big to cut it... 4 hours later we came back for water... hot, tanned, reeking of anchovy, and waving our hands around talking about the 30+ fish we caught and released, EACH. (We also hooked onto some sturgeon, but they released themselves. Heh.) Bob is my new hero, my anchovy touting hero. This was probably one of the best fishing days of my life, action wise... and he knew exactly what we needed to do to get to the fish. read more

Like another reviewer, I went to Bob's for one reason only: Crawdads (crayfish). I called at 12:19 PM (looking at my phone log) to ask if they had blue crayfish. The woman that answered, "yes." I told her I was on my way, would be there in an hour or so to pick up 3 lbs of blue crayfish. Because I was taking my 3 year old on an "adventure," I took the scenic River Road for part of the trip and stopped at one of the huge communications towers to take a picture. Since an hour had passed since I first called Bob's, I called again to (a) make sure they knew I was still on my way and (b) confirm they had the 3 lbs of blue crayfish. I called at 1:25 pm and this time a man answered. I told him I was 30 minutes away, called earlier, and wanted to make sure they had the 3 lbs of blue crayfish. He answered, "yes, I have them." Great! Or so I thought. I arrived 30 minutes later, walked in, and said, "hi, I'm here for my 3 lbs of blue crayfish." The guy there asks me, "are you the one that called." Yep, that would be me: the mofo that called TWICE about the 3 POUNDS of BLUE CRAYFISH! He simply tells me "I'm sorry I wasn't able to get them." That's it. Well, at least I had a nice 60+ mile round trip drive to your lovely bait shop. Of course, had I known that Bob's did not have my crayfish I would have simply waited until tomorrow morning to drive 16 miles round trip to the farmer's market near South Side Park. I have bough craw dads here before so I was very upset and confused when I ordered more(12lbs) to be ready Sunday, I just called( it's Sunday, 2 days later) and they are sold out. That fine if you sell out but don't tell people that you will have the amount they wish for and then don't when I'm ready to pick up my order? This place has changed! I remember when you can drive over and pick up live crawfish anytime! Now it doesn't matter when you call and how much you want to purchase they simply don't have nothing to sell you. I have been trying to purchase live crawfish since January of this year and every time I call ahead to place an order I get the same answer no more, sold out, call again. I came here for one reason and one reason only. The crawfish. The lady that operated the shop didn't understand me for some reason. I asked her to buy 20 lbs of crawfish and she said we could only purchase 5 lbs of blue crawfish and 5 lbs of red crawfish. I did not understand why? I told her I was buying the the 20lbs because It was for me and friends and still she gave me the same answer. I drove an hour from sacramento expecting 20 lbs of crawfish and left with only 10lbs. Like everyone else we went here for the river crawdad. We made a call to reserve 5 lbs. The Asian lady said that she has a lot so come and she reserved the 5 lbs for us. We were excited so we plan to do a scenic drive in the morning the next day on Saturday. While we were debating to get more lbs when we get there. Gas at this time was around $4 per gallon. It's about 80 miles from us. So we got our cooler and left early morning to beat the traffic near Antioch. We got there around 10 am. When we asked to pickup the order, she said all the crawdads die. She did not know why it die. Her face did not show any sincerity on her answer. She kept saying, Sorry no crawdad and look away. It's the kind of face that my pet dog would give me when he make a mistake. We were mad since the driving was far. We think this place does not reserve any crawdads. After reading other yelp, it looks like a trend where people get fool for coming and telling them they don't have any. Had she call us about the issue, we would have come another day. read more

When I was a kid my father used to take us to Bob's before we hit our favorite spot in the slough. This is one of the best shop I've been to. I even bought a Master Baiter hat so I can 'represent'. Go here if you are in the area. Make it a tradition. read more

Bob is the man.... Great guy very friendly and more importantly VERY HELPFUL.... if you are willing to learn hes willing to teach and let me tell you he knows what he is talking about.....He has put me on some very good fish and taught me ALOT about fishing the area wether its speeds to troll with certain lures to how to make my own sturgeon leaders etc... if the world had more people like bob it would be a better place.... Jane who also works in the shop is a sweet heart and a joy to converse with.... overall the shop is just the definition of what a bait shop should be small town feel great bait and informative owner ... I cant say enough about bobs bait shop or just him as a person ... I would highly recommend you stop by if your ever planning a fishing trip in the area read more

I guess this bait shop just does not want my business. On 3 separate occasions, I was told one thing on the phone and when I arrived at the bait shop I received something different. My first experience was approximately 4 months ago: I wanted to spend an afternoon fishing so I decided to stop by the shop to purchase some bait. When I arrived I was told 40 lbs crayfish was reserved for another customer. My second attempt ( 6 weeks later) I called the afternoon before my fishing day to make sure they were selling crayfish. I asked what time they opened and was told 6:00 am. When I arrived at 7:30 am the shop was closed. I back tracked to Rio Vista and made my purchases at another bait shop. On my way home I drove back to the bait shop I was told by the lady that they were open at 7:30 and I must have been mistaken. My third and final attempt to purchased Crayfish came this past Saturday. I first called on Friday to make sure they had crayfish for sell. I was told they had crayfish and would be open on Saturday. I called Saturday around 1:30 pm again to confirm they were open and I was told they would be closing at 5:00 pm. I told the person on the phone that I would be purchasing a couple of pounds. I drove the 40 miles to the bait shop intent on purchasing crayfish. I arrived at the shop at 4:15 pm and found the shop closed. I again had to circle back to Rio Vista to make my purchase. I will not make anymore attempts. read more
