I had a clogged main drain today, super easy access with in the middle of the driveway, called the first company that came up since I just wanted to see what the general situation was, how fast I can get someone, how much it would roughly cost me. They couldn't quote me a price but I agreed to have them come over because they said they had a free onsite consultation. I was going to confer with my plumber (who wasn't available today) after the quote to see what I should do. So we found the issue and I told the technician that I had to speak to someone about it but it took a minute to get a hold of him. In the meantime the RR technician put a clipboard under my nose, he calls and 'Estimate confirmation'. I thought it was just for us to have a written agreement on the estimate, so he can show his company that he had been here to check out the situation. I never once said, ok let's do it and officially asked him to start the job. I went around the corned to talk to my plumber who misunderstood me on the pricing thought I had said $250 and said that is prob a normal price, but to ask the technician that we don't need a camera in the pipe and if that would make it cheaper. As I came back the technician had already taken most of his equipment out of his truck and when I was confused about it because I had never given him the go ahead for the job he grumpily said "Well, why did you sign the estimate then?". I cannot deal with grumpiness or aggression so I just let him move forward after he had told me that the camera was a free add-on not actually part of the price. He then snaked 1(!) main pipe for about 15/20min and that was it. I was super chocked about the price still and after he had left started calling other companies. I was quoted the above mentioned and confirmed for my size property price of $33 for the service for today. That is more than 17x less than what Roto-Rooter charged me. I called the office, the guy said there was no wrong doing, they are the best, with the best insurance, they can go into hotels, mum and pop companies can't do that and that is the price that is set by the corporation and he cannot give a refund because the work was done. He then agreed to talk to a superior to see if he can get me a valued customer discount. I am waiting to hear back. Will update. But how insane - 17x more expensive than other companies.. $33, $59, $125 actual quotes from local, same day, service providers and they charged me $553 & 3% credit card fee. How can they justify such a price!! I had no idea about any of this before today and with the technicians pushiness and grumpiness they put me on the spot and didn't let me make a clear decision and I felt forced into letting him do the job and not look elsewhere. But honestly even if, there is NO WAY IN THE WORLD I COULD HAVE EVEN IMAGINED HOW MUCH MORE THEY DARE TO CHARGE THAN ANY OTHER COMPANY. I am flabbergasted. Our pressure regulator to the house failed and the water pressure was 150psi. This sprung a leak in the old shower valve (3 knob) for our main bathroom. It backs up to the hallway. He came over, addressed the immediate need by capping off the water lines feeding the tub valve in our bathroom. We were without a primary tub for a few days while the valve (we have an older house and this is particular part is not common) was ordered. It left us with full functionality of our home including a stand up shower in the second bathroom. He worked from the hallway, so that we wouldn't have to re-tile our bathroom tub surround. This is quite a bit trickier, but much better for the homeowner. He also replaced or regulator on the outside of the house. This was at the very beginning of pandemic lockdowns! He wore a mask and gloves at all times. When he left, he left everything spotless. And on Christmas Eve, he dropped by with a gift for our son. He remembered us 8 months later and our boy (who constantly wanted to "see what was going on"). Awake Plumbing-not just great service. The owner, Al, is quite simple and exceptionally caring and thoughtful human being. I'll be using his services whenever I need ANY plumbing needs taken care of.
