Plagued for years with my pesky tonsils I was tired of getting tonsillitis and booked myself in for an appointment with one of the consultants at Ross Hall Hospital to talk about getting them taken out. Everything was organised quick smart and three weeks later I was taken in to have my tonsils removed.
Ross Hall is a private hospital and the staff are really attentive and you don't feel like you're being rushed out as you are just another number in a bed like some NHS hospitals. I was in the Royal Infirmary a few months before this and the doctors seemed to look down their nose at everyone and treated the nurses as if they were muck off their shoe even though the nurses were the ones that seemed to be doing all of the work. It was an awful experience and I'm glad I was able to go to Ross Hall to have my operation.
I was in my own room which had its own en-suite bathroom, it was as welcoming as a hospital could be with soft towels, plush carpets and a nice view of a small garden outside.
I had never had an operation before and was feeling rather nervous but the consultant visited me before my operation and explained everything that was going to happen so I felt more at ease. I was wheeled down to the operating theatre and the anaesthetist was chatting away and the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room, I felt very drowsy and I just remember feeling really shivery and itchy but it was just the anaesthetic wearing off.
When I got back to my room I was still very drowsy but my mum and best friend informed me later that I was talking absolute nonsense before falling back asleep again - a little embarrassing.
I didn't want to eat after my operation as my throat hurt so bad, I was told that after tonsillitis you are given ice-cream to eat all day but in actual fact I was told to eat things like toast and hard things to take away any infection around the throat. It was pretty painful but it was all part of the healing process. I was in for two nights and I tried some of the food as there was so much to choose from. It was more like a restaurant rather than typical hospital food. There was a lovely woman who brought the food round and she popped into my room the evening after my operation with an ice pole for me which I thought was really kind and thoughtful.
My consultant even came to visit me after the operation to see how I was getting on and to apologise for the fact that I would be in a lot of pain but it was all worth it as my tonsils were among the worst that he'd seen.
Overall, Ross Hall was a very positive experience, as far as hospital experiences go. There was no typical hospital smell, no over crowded wards and from start to finish my operation was a success and I was put at ease my whole time staying here. read more
