My little guy. I'm thankful to Blue Perl for all they have done to help me with my sickly boy.

**This is really long, but I want to communicate my full experience to others who may be looking for an emergent hospital when their pet needs it.** I just want to praise Blue Pearl for all of the support they provide when I'm worried about my pet. Whenever I call I get a supportive person who calms me down by explaining what could be happening. Also, they don't even charge me when I call, which is amazing in itself. My little guy has seizures and when it first started I was in a major panic. (I've gotten more used to it now and can handle it better on my own because I know how to care for him.) But anyway, I called today for a separate reason. My Yorkie was swallowing hard. I called Blue Pearl to get advice and they were very patient. They told me I could come in or monitor for additional symptoms (and listed what those would be). I decided to monitor him for symptoms and not more than an hour later he had diarrhea and vomiting. (Neither of these are very unusual for him, but having them occur in sequence with the vomiting was concerning.) I called Blue Pearl a second time and explained what was happening. The nurse (I wish I recalled her name) was so knowledgeable. I explained that he had eaten plants outside earlier today and she then explained how the leaves and stems can irritate their throats. She told me I was welcome to come in and get something to soothe his throat or continue to monitor him and take him to my vet in the morning. I appreciated her explaining things and providing options. Right now, I'm monitoring him. Thank you, Blue Pearl! I cannot express how much I appreciate having somewhere to turn after hours (it was between 7 and 8:15 pm) for support!

I called late last night after my dog woke up around 2 AM yelping, shaking, and clearly…read moredisoriented. It was sudden and alarming--he seemed confused, trembling, scared, and very clingy. This is not normal behavior and it was incredibly scary. I called the only emergency vet in the QC immediately. When I explained the symptoms, the woman who answered told me there was nothing they could do and that I would need to drive to Cedar Rapids or Des Moines. I asked if she could offer any guidance or insight into what might be happening or how to handle it in the moment, but she was short, dismissive, and didn't provide any meaningful help. I'm left questioning how this qualifies as an emergency service if the response is simply to send people two hours away without offering any support or basic information. It was frustrating and disappointing, especially in a stressful situation. I ended up finding more helpful information and reassurance on my own from Chat GPT within minutes than I received during that call. How incredibly sad when you get more empathy from AI than you do from the "professional" human at the vet? I ultimately determined on my own that it was most likely a focal seizure and that I could monitor him overnight and follow up with his regular vet in the morning. It seems like this is something an emergency veterinary service could have helped assess with a bit more attention, care, and a few additional questions, rather than the dismissive response I received. So just a heads up--this "emergency vet" may decline to see you and your pet and instead direct you to Cedar Rapids or Des Moines, over two hours away, even in an emergency situation. I was on the phone for only a few minutes with no questions answered before they determine they are not willing to see you, which made an already stressful situation feel even more dismissed.
