My daughter and I drove down from Orange County. I was so excited to see LaJolla had a Bluemercury. Loved the products and service I received from the New Orleans and Charleston stores. Was disappointed they don't carry my Baccarat Rouge 540 fragrance. What was really disturbing was the sales clerks followed us around in a creepy/hovering way. While looking at lotion the sales clerk would appear right next to us and pretend to organize product. It was a weird vibe. We were going to buy a few things but decided to leave. Came here on a whim because I needed a new sunscreen and prefer to get mine from higher-end places (I have sensitive skin, rosacea, need ones with good ingredients, etc) and was given the best one I've ever tried in less than 10 mins! I think it was Kimberly who helped us because her name is on my receipt. She was so friendly, casual, and really knowledgeable about the products. I ended up purchasing 2 Barbara Sturm creams as well as serums for my redness prone skin areas. They matched my skin for a CC tinted sunscreen perfectly. I'm so surprised to see this location with such low stars: Every single time I've visited the sales associates have been so friendly. It really feels like I'm shopping with my girlfriends instead of a customer being tolerated. A huge part of this is that the associates who work here have NEVER pressured me to buy something (unlike some other beauty stores!) so I feel free to take my time and choose the products that are right for me. They do get a little busy at times, but I've never felt ignored or forgotten as the associates work through the queue. In fact, Esthetician Tracy even hops in to help when she's free! I also want to shout out the two employees with the colored hair: They make me laugh and make what's normally a pretty overwhelming experience (so many options!) a breeze. As a Black woman, I always worry that the makeup options won't compliment my skin tone, but BlueMercury not only has my color in foundations and other makeup, they have skincare specifically for darker tones and made by Black entrepreneurs. I love that and it makes me feel welcomed, valued, and equal to every other customer who walks through the door. I make a point of stopping by every time I visit La Jolla! I hope others don't avoid the shop because of the reviews on here. Give them a chance and you'll see they're wonderful! read more

Yikes! The customer service is lacking, to say the least. This location is walking distance from home so I have tried to shop here a few times, but the customer service is so bad that I have to be done. Each time I have come in, I have been the only person in the store and have not been greeted. The ladies are behind the cash wrap or standing at a table chatting with eachother and it feels like I am interrupting and am unwelcome when I ask questions. I have never left a review on Yelp or any website before. However, my experience with Bluemercury was so bad that I feel compelled to leave a review. My friend had recommended them so I called them and left a message that I'd like to come in for a consult. I did not receive a return phone call so I actually called several times and left messages and they never returned my call. I decided to drive to the LaJolla store, which was a 20 to 30 minute drive, to speak to a sales person and hopefully either get assistance or make an appointment for assistance. The sales person said that she could not assist me, but she would set up an appointment for me and so I agreed to come back on another day. I came back at my scheduled time only to be informed that even though my appointment was in their system, they did not have anybody there to assist me. I spoke to the manager, and she was extremely rude to me, and quite frankly simply ignored me. I asked if she could arrange for anybody to give me some assistance. Eventually, another person came up, who was very helpful and apologized for my situation then asked if I wanted to schedule a time to meet with someone. I politely thanked her for the offer and said I do not know my schedule, you don't answer or return phone calls and I can't be sure that if I made another appointment, you would in fact have someone to help me. So I gave her my telephone number and asked her to speak to ask someone who could help me and have them to reach out to me to schedule a time. I never heard from anyone. I want to emphasize that I was extremely courteous and respectful through out the entire process, so their behavior is even more disconcerting. read more

Tracie is so great at what she does, it was so convenient, I was running late from traffic and she made my stress melt with her amazing skills, she is incredible at her job and the best Esthetician I have had the pleasure of receiving a spa treatment from. I hadn't been in this Blue Mercury in about 12 months, since I was not impressed with the customer service the last time I shopped there, but hoping that things had changed, I stopped in on a quiet Friday afternoon. Sadly, no improvement in customer service. Three salespeople in the store, and while one did retrieve an item I inquired about, I spent 10 minutes on my own reading hair product labels, opening jars, and looking at products with no assistance. Bluemercury's corporate office should be made aware of the terrible and possibly racist customer service at this location. The sales representatives appear to be selective in greeting certain customers and not greeting others. Upon observing the patterns of behavior at this store, I noticed that the customer service representatives greet white customers but do not greet non-white customers. Bluemercury clearly needs to provide training on unconscious (and conscious) bias. If it doesn't fix this problem, Bluemercury will likely go out of business. And in my opinion, Bluemercury would deserve that fate. read more

Bluemercury is here! I was an east coaster for 10 years and grew very dependent upon Bluemercury's products and artists. I moved to SD four years ago and feel like the Ultas, Sephoras and Nordstrom counters have just not been cutting it. Luckily, Bluemercury has arrived! I headed to Bluemercury because I've recently been very unhappy with my makeup (a Nordstrom counter brand). I have very oily, acne-prone skin and I was wondering which was the lesser of the two evils: no makeup face (oily, red, spotty) or makeup face (greasy, uneven, discolored). Bluemercury's Katie was an excellent listener, made me up with some Hourglass, RMS and M-61 products and.... Changed my life! My makeup face went from a 3 to a 9 (is anyone's skin really a 10?). It's day three of doing my own makeup at home and I'm easily replicating Katie's job thanks to her advice/suggestions. I can't stop staring at my face. It looks like my natural skin and there are no more sliding grease pools of makeup by mid-day. I'm so relieved and happy. Parking and traffic are terrible and their products are not cheap... but in my experience the quality of product and staff is more than worth it. read more

Was on vacation, taking in the sites, when suddenly my significant other decides we should visit his family. I had absolutely NO make-up and of course, I wanted to make a good impression since this would be my first time meeting them. Walked into Bluemercury, explained my situation and the staff was simply AMAZING. They asked me what I needed, got me matching lipstick, blush and eyeshadow, gave me other products, such as, moisturizer, toner and the like, all with the understanding that I was not there to purchase anything. In fact, they even asked what fragrance I use and set me up with a little sample bottle, so I could take it with me. Of course, I ended up buying some products the lipstick with rosehip felt like silk on my lips and the mascara was so natural that I would have been an idiot not to purchase. I have been a Bluemercury fan for years and was excited to bring my boyfriend in to get some skincare for him. The two women working when we entered were incredibly aloof and dismissive. Neither offered any help, didn't even pay attention to the fact that were alive and breathing in the store, for the entire time we were there. My boyfriend spent good money on a number of products and they were rude and cold during the checkout process. He went to use the restroom and I was left with the two saleswomen who whispered to each other while I stood there alone. They kept passing glances towards the bathroom and towards me, as if we were doing something wrong. They did not thank us when we left. Word to the wise: don't go here. You can get these products anywhere else without such horrible service and energy. I agree with the review below... corporate definitely needs to interfere. Poor experience here - I thought that the staff would be knowledgeable on clean beauty and they really aren't. I realized Credo UTC is the place to go for that (also a great customer experience and spent half of what I did at BM!), whereas Bluemercury is aesthetic focused. I came in about a month ago and I found the staff to be unimpressive and really lacking knowledge of products beyond their personal preferences. I shared details around my skin condition (medical) and was too trusting in their recommendations. When I got home and read the ingredient lists and did more research online, I was honestly shocked at what they encouraged me to purchase. I returned it the next week without use. Considering I shared my condition was medical, I'm very surprised they didn't take the request for their professional recommendation more seriously. I would have rather they said, they didn't know what would be best for me - clearly work on commission so were not concerned about me, just the $ I'd make them.
