After replacing a door and frame recently, it was easy to see the drywall and patching that went around where the frame had been. Luckily, the previous owner of the home had kept cans of paint (and labeled them by room!) from the last time the house had been spruced up. I grabbed the can for the room needing some love and headed to my local Porter Paints to get what I needed. The store itself, located at the corner of Breckenridge Ln and Willis Ave, is clean, well-organized, and a great place to find home improvement inspiration. While not as large as a home improvement megastore, the location had everything you might need to give your home a professional-looking paint job. The staff was very friendly, and - using the can I had brought in - were able to match the paint I bought to the can the previous owner had left. It took just about 2 minutes for my can of paint to be ready and for me to be back on my way to improving the look of my home.

PC is an authorized Stihl dealer. They also repair Stihl products…read more I have a 16 year old Stihl chainsaw I bought new. It has performed flawlessly over the years. I haven't used the saw in a couple years. Recently I took the saw off the shelf just to see if it would start after sitting for an extended time. Unfortunately, the saw was sitting in a puddle of bar oil. I checked You Tube for the possible problem. Turns out that over time (16 years) the rubber oil line from the oil tank to the bar/chain can deteriorate and start leaking. I also watched a video on how to change the oil line. Of course the repair guy on the video made it look fairly easy. So, I decide to make the repair myself. I got the part from PC and proceeded to tear down my saw to make the repair. Well it turns out the repair wasn't quite as easy as the video made it out to be. I got to a point I realized I wasn't going to get this done. I took my saw (in pieces) to PC to have their repair man look at it and give me a price to finish the repair. Keep in mind the saw is 16 yrs old and not worth putting a lot of money into it. The repair man, Ed, got the new line on and reassembled the saw with the parts I had taken to him. Not only did Ed fix the saw, he did it for a very reasonable price. Top notch service provided by Ed and PC. I have several Stihl products and would not hesitate to take any of them to Ed/PC for service or repairs.

This is an independent franchise so I get to support a local business while still having a great selection and competitive pricing. Customer win on multiple levels. I needed to go in for an outside drainage solution before the rain hit. I went in by myself and the folks behind the counter collaborated with me to find a price-friendly solution that fit my needs and was simple to install. I never felt intimidated (unfortunately that's still a reality in some places) and would have no problem going back for my next project (and there is ALWAYS a next project...). PS - the person behind the counter (owner?) was explaining to me that they get a really great deal on paint, a white label brand of the expensive stuff at a steady ~20% off. In case that's a project YOU are ready to start, definitely check these guys out.

Oscar's has a bit of everything -- plants out front to buy, all the bits you'd expect to find at a hardware store with some other odds and ends inside. It feels very mom-and-pop. The people working are always very friendly and knowledgeable -- and fast. And, surprisingly affordable, even cheaper than big box hardware in some cases. I've lived in the neighborhood for oh gosh, 22 years. Eek. And they have been a godsend for Crescent Hill homeowners like me. It's not just the convenience, it's the ability to provide services that old homes need. For example, my house was built in 1928. I still have, and use an old school deadbolt on my front door.. with its original key. They are the only place in town (that I've found) who can cut replicas of this particular key style.. and guess what they charge? $1.99 a key! That's it. Pretty sure the HD is around $4-5 a key. Example 2: I haven't replaced all the windows in my house yet. A few years ago I needed to repair some of the screens and a few cracked window panels. The old school kind, 4 aluminum sides and a sheet of glass. Guess who was the only place that still repairs those?.. you betcha. Example 3: I had a ceiling fan in need of an odd-sided light bulb. Guess where I found one? Small local businesses like Oscar's truly make this neighborhood special. Next time you need a tool or things for a home repair, especially weird, older-home things, don't sleep on Oscar's.
