Make sure to know what you want when you get here! They are NOT willing to work with you. They'll just look at you like you're stupid.

I asked where he got it and he got it at Dages Paint. Honestly I always thought independent paint stores like Dages were for contractors, not the general public. But I went there anyway for a gallon of paint and the experience couldn't have gone better. The guy at the counter was helpful and patient. The prices seem in line with the big box stores. I'll gladly get my paint and supplies from Dages moving forward.

The folks greeted me when I entered and thanked me for the copious amount of love and attention that I showed the store cat. No pressure to buy, no shakedown about my intentions. They then gave me space to get down to the business of examining paint swatches. Based on the discussions I heard while in the store, I think that a lot of professional painters and designers use Dages. The people working there are helpful and very knowledgable, but not at all pushy. They spoke to their regulars like friends, which I loved. Dages has a full range of equipment, paint types, and colors to fit any DIY or commercial endeavor. The staff are cool and I wouldn't hesitate asking them any question I had about a project. When I left with a handful of ideas but no actual paint, they thanked me and said come back anytime. That's my kind of customer service. I'll be back, no doubt.

The store's owner, Sandra, is so approachable, and you can tell she's passionate about this. Alas, I have not yet had a need for their building products. But I have purchased several of the gift items they have in the store -- another reason to check it out! Honest Home carries this fun line of cards with cut-out birds to be used in mobiles. It also has kits to build your own toys, and for Christmas, I particularly admired the ornaments and wood veneer Christmas tree garland. The store gets the veneer scraps from manufacturers, and it would have otherwise been thrown out. Honest Home brings its green mission to Christmas trees as well. And for home products, I've noticed that they carry recycled rugs, compost bins, flooring and countertops, lighting, cleaning products and paint. I am hoping to buy a home soon, so I'm looking forward to getting some green supplies to make over my new home. I'm holding out on the fifth star until then. I'm sure I'll continue to be impressed by Honest Home.

When we finally got a person to assist us he made a point to verbalize the cost of each item that we were looking for. We came prepared to buy 3 sliding doors and an exterior door for the garage. His exact words were, "Well the installation is alone is $600 and you still have to buy the doors." We where well aware that the doors and the installation would come with a price. The associate pointing out specifically the cost of everything we asked for was off-putting. So much so that we left the St. Matthews Home Depot to go to another one. We are not compelled to spend the money with any business AND, we WILL NOT spend our money with a business that employs personnel that are unempathetic, judgmental, and lacking culture sensitivity. Contrary to popular belief money is green and all ethnicities posses the ability to spend it. It is our sincere hope that this review leads to some sort of cultural awareness and employees are encouraged to leave their personal thoughts, feelings and bias at the door prior to clocking in. So will take our $3500 to spend with someone who can, at a minimum, provide basic customer service bias free.

Oscar's is one of those neighborhood gems that offers a hint of yesteryear with gadgets of today…read more If you live in or near Crescent Hill, you'll be pleased to find Oscar's sitting at the corner of Frankfort Ave and Franck Ave. It's a small but mighty shop, very walkable, easy, free out-front street parking. It feels very mom-and-pop. The people working are always very friendly and knowledgeable -- and fast. And, surprisingly affordable, even cheaper than big box hardware in some cases. I've lived in the neighborhood for oh gosh, 22 years. Eek. And they have been a godsend for Crescent Hill homeowners like me. It's not just the convenience, it's the ability to provide services that old homes need. For example, my house was built in 1928. I still have, and use an old school deadbolt on my front door.. with its original key. They are the only place in town (that I've found) who can cut replicas of this particular key style.. and guess what they charge? $1.99 a key! That's it. Pretty sure the HD is around $4-5 a key. Example 2: I haven't replaced all the windows in my house yet. A few years ago I needed to repair some of the screens and a few cracked window panels. The old school kind, 4 aluminum sides and a sheet of glass. Guess who was the only place that still repairs those?.. you betcha. Example 3: I had a ceiling fan in need of an odd-sided light bulb. Guess where I found one? Small local businesses like Oscar's truly make this neighborhood special. Next time you need a tool or things for a home repair, especially weird, older-home things, don't sleep on Oscar's.

If I truly had time to peruse I bet I would find even more that would be helpful to have. This store is larger than you would think when just looking at its front. A locally owned, neighborhood hardware store -- love I can find what I need so close!
