Tom was our tour guide. He was super knowledgeable and had a lot of great advice for bourbon drinkers regarding sipping techniques and flavor notes. We truly enjoyed our trip to Elkwood Farm. We visited the downtown location (closed in June '25) several times and Bluegrass Distillers NEVER disappoints. Highly recommend your next stop on your Bourbon adventure is Bluegrass.

Attended the Bluegrass Trust July D'tour last night. It is likely you've passed this historical property while traveling Leestown Road, not knowing it is there. Elkwood Farm, circa mid 1830's, is now the home of Bluegrass Distillers. A sojourn into Kentucky history, I recommend a visit. 57

Elkwood farm is the new home of Bluegrass Distillers. It is located in beautiful rolling hills outside the picturesque town of Midway. The farm has a mansion from built in the 1830's. There are big plans for this property including a cafe and gardens. Right now the distillery is getting finishing touches and the mansion is being refurbished. Scott, our tasting guide did an exceptional job of giving us the history of the property and of Bluegrass bourbons. Definitely worth a stop.

The tour and tasting was great but the best part of all was being able to fill my own bottle directly from a barrel with some of the best bourbon around even got to put on my own label seal it and sign it.

Love the tasting experience. The nice young lady who walked us thru each pour was fantastic! Knowledgeable, courteous, and kind. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

The initial impression as you pull into Wild Turkey is that this is a manufacturing and industrial site first and foremost. While that does take away from the initial "wow factor" as a guest, it is understandable. Once you get past that, you arrive at the visitor center, which has a view that is absolutely incredible and outdoor amenities that would make hanging out there quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the inside experience at the gift shop left much to be desired. We did not do the tour, so this is only based on the visitor center and retail experience. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly face and directed toward the gift shop. The bartender was friendly, but the other three employees had their heads buried in their phones and did not seem concerned with our experience or offering help. While that may not be unexpected in some places, at a location like this, especially after visiting Buffalo Trace earlier in the day, it felt very subpar. The bottle selection on the shelf was fairly standard and did not feel much different from what I could find at a local liquor store. Some prices also seemed higher than local shops. Of the 15+ bottles we purchased today, none were from here. We considered trying a flight or a few samples, but the prices felt more reminiscent of a downtown bar than a distillery tasting experience. While we were not on a budget, the feeling of being overcharged deterred us from moving forward with the samples we had been interested in. I will not say that I would never go back, but I would not put this at the top of our Bourbon Trail list either, unless maybe for the views and a picnic.

There are two buildings and you check in at the one building, near a parking lot, but then get on a tour bus and they take you to the other building, which has the gift shop. It seemed a bit counterintuitive to start at the other building, then. Before this, I was super hungry, so we went to their bar area in the gift shop and ordered the charcuterie, which ended up just being like a metal box with some meats, cheeses, and other things, and a bag with a few pretzels in it. Disappointing especially for $33, although it kinda worked out because we only had a half-hour before the tour. I didn't know that Woodford Reserve has actually only been around since 1996 but the campus they purchased has buildings from 1890 and later - I would've loved to have heard more about that history even though it wasn't technically Woodford's. At the end of the tour, they return you to the gift shop and that's where you do the tasting - there is a private tasting room. I should probably note that we did the basic tour - it was $35 and my husband said you could get a similar tasting to the one we got, in the gift shop area, for $30, which made the tour only $5, which isn't bad. I did end up buying a pin, a magnet, and a sampler box of their bourbon treats (chocolates etc. - expensive, at $46 or so, but looks good) and my husband bought a few of their bottles. However, next time we are in Louisville we can probably skip this one, I'm thinking.

Seen was our master bourbon blender and she was so knowledgeable and made this whole experience memorable and unforgettable. We did a tour around where she explained everything. We felt like you were family and we loved how personalized our experience was. It was different than some of the bigger distilleries that felt less personal and more corporate, which made this experience even more special. Our tasting was amazing and we learned a lot about the aging of bourbon and the stave aging that they do at J Mattingly Distillery. Highly recommend checking out this distillery and bringing home some of your favorites home with you!

It is really cool because they do a decent amount of speciality bottles that are one and done. So once sold out, the are out for good. I really enjoyed the Vietnam light whiskey. I still am thinking about how unique it was. The bourbon 30 was also not bad and for $40 it would be worth it. The rest of the bottles are on the expensive side with most being over $100. Inside, seemed a little disorganized but everyone was nice nonetheless. Overall, I may be back for a light whiskey because I am still thinking about the one I tasted. Check it out, especially if near buffalo trace.
