If you are looking for estate sales that do not disappoint I highly recommend attending a Blue Waters sale. I have found so many treasures over the years including furniture (from Danish teak to boho to traditional), original oil paintings, beautiful textiles from around the world, Italian pottery and ceramics (ranging from Bitossi to Cantagalli), Scandinavian enamelware (think CatherinHolm, Finel, etc.), glassware and crystal from brands like Baccarat to Kosta Boda. Then there are the practical items that I've picked up for a song: taper candles, high quality serving utensils (this really came in handy when I ditched ALL of my black plastic spatulas), pots and pans, PLANTS!, and so much more. The staff is lovely and will do what they can to help you out. If you go often enough they start to recognize you. :) Attending a Blue Waters Sale is a great way to spend a weekend morning!

Priced $70, at time of sale $270

Not a good experience with Blue Waters Estate Sales. Very dishonest seller, after having paid for a few items, she walked by and notice a few items and told me that it was the wrong price and took them away from us, unless we wanted to paid the difference. She said that someone must has chance the price, even though it was her own price tags. She went ahead an told us that she always goes back and raise the prices. A bait and switch business. In some pictures, you can see the pricing, but at the sale, the price has increased tremendously. We were interested in one floor lamp priced at $70, on the day of the sale it was $270. It was obvious, the 2 was added to the tag. The same with many items.

My mother had lived in our family home since 1950 and my father had spent years collecting everything from African masks to Asian art to beer steins plus many other odd items that stuck his fancy. Steve said this was the biggest job he had taken on, but this did not slow him down for a minute. From start to finish he methodically researched, organized and priced items for sale. I do not live in San Diego, but friends reported that on the day of the sale the line was out the door and the traffic in the house carefully controlled. The sale was a fabulous success netting more that the amount Steve had hoped. After the sale was complete Steve gave us a fair price for the remaining items that had gone unsold. He also gave us a reasonable price to totally clean out the house leaving it ready for the painters who would begin work the following week. It is normal for the person holding an estate sale to have to deal with more than one family member and navigate delicate family issues in preparation for the sale. I cannot say enough about how Steve was able to answer all questions in preparation for the sale patiently to everyone's satisfaction. No down sides to hiring Mattson Estate Sales! Steve and his team are the best and I cannot recommend his company more strongly.

Unfortunately, this experience was very disappointing. About three and a half weeks before we needed to be out of our rental, Steve came to review what we had available. We showed him many higher-priced, quality items and asked specifically about everything -- including food, supplements, furniture, a heavy fountain, and more. He indicated he would take it all and that we had enough to make it worth his time and effort. As agreed, five days before the scheduled pickup, his employee did a final walkthrough. We provided a detailed list of items we had already discussed with Steve and had even added additional items he had previously said he would take. Then, just two days later, we received a text saying this was now considered more of a cleanout -- and that we would need to pay him over $1,700. During a follow-up phone call, he said the items we had previously discussed were not worth his time to take. This was especially frustrating because we had offered to let him take only what he felt was worth selling. This sudden change completely disrupted our timeline and plans to be out of the rental by the end of the month. We feel the expectations set at the beginning were not honored, which put us in a very difficult position on a tight schedule. Based on our experience, I would advise being very cautious when making plans, especially if you are working within strict deadlines.

As a shopper, it's easy to see why their sales stand out: warm welcomes, genuine enthusiasm for each sale, fair pricing, beautiful staging, great photography and social media, and a fun environment that makes people want to come back. I've been on both sides of the estate sale process -- as a shopper, and also helping deal with a family estate -- and I can honestly say I would recommend them both to families looking for someone trustworthy to handle a sale and shoppers looking for beautiful, interesting finds. I've been going to their sales for over a year now, probably at least a dozen of them, and I've spent many thousands of dollars there on everything from antiques and collectibles to things I just needed around the house. Diana and Teri are sisters and co-owners, and their family is involved too -- their mom Judith and Teri's daughter Antonia. It really does feel like a family-run business in the best way. They are warm, hardworking, organized, honest, and very good at what they do. Their pricing is fair, and the environment is fun to shop. They do price some of the more unique or high-quality items on the higher side at first, but that makes sense to me. Those pieces deserve a chance to bring a strong price, especially on day one, and like most estate sales, pricing may be adjusted later if something hasn't sold. One of the things I love most is that they seem to care about the story behind the home. When it makes sense, they honor the person who lived there and collected those things over a lifetime. That part really matters to me. Their sales can get very busy, and I've personally watched them deal with big crowds, pressure, and people who are not always behaving well. They still manage to keep things moving, keep it fair, and keep the mood fun. Honestly, "grace under pressure" is the phrase that comes to mind because that is how they all are. I especially want to mention Antonia because I've seen her at the jewelry counter many times, and that is probably one of the most intense spots at any estate sale. People can get pushy and competitive around jewelry and valuables. I've always seen her be firm, organized, fair, and kind, even when customers were clearly out of line. There is a difference between being rude and holding boundaries in a chaotic environment. Another thing worth mentioning is that they have a great reputation. I hear good things about them not just from shoppers, but even from people who work in the estate sale world, which says a lot. Whether you are hiring someone to run a sale or just shopping their sales, I think Integrity First Sales is one of the best. They have earned my trust, my repeat business, and my enthusiastic recommendation.

I don't mind paying $ for things I like. Last year I went to my neighbors estate sale, she has passed. I overheard them talking about how some girl found a bottle of crown royal (apparently it was worth money) and thank goodness they were able to make something up to not give it to her. She took the other bottles. I took a photo of the bottle and later found it for over $1,600. They made up an entire story how the kids wanted that bottle, I can assure you, I know them and they didn't. Just felt off. Yesterday three things stuck out to me that were just not kind. I got there at 7 am and was the first 10 people who was able to get inside. She posted a video saying over 100 people were waiting in line at opening. This was not true, it was closer to 50-60. Maybe after 11 they had more but at 9 it wasn't that full. I came there specifically for a brown set of flatware I saw online. I was THE FIRST ONE IN THE KITCHEN and it wasn't there. I asked and they said someone bought it. No one checked out with it. I waited. I guarantee you these ladies pick through and get what they want before sales day. 100%. No integrity in that. The most bothersome was a gentleman who spent OVER $3,000! The attitude he got from the women ringing him out was beyond me. Poor guy didn't speak English well and he just tried his best. Terrible! She also overcharged him $182, I'm a math queen, and that was horrible. If someone is spending that kind of money day one, you should be very kind to him. Anyway, plenty of other estate sales that I think have true integrity and don't steal alcohol and items others woke up early to purchase.
