North Road Timber & Joinery

You might never have even noticed this building, somehow it gets forgotten on this busy road and I guess most people don't need a timber shop very often- which is a shame because it's a real pleasure going into this place. It smells wonderful for one thing, and you can sense the possibility around you in all the bits of wood. There are two floors and they hold pretty much every type of wood you could need as well as ready made doors, windows, shutters and all manner of beautiful moldings and ornate wooden fixtures. The staff are really excellent with advice- I didn't know where to start when I first went in!
North Road Timber is a buildingworks, DIY, or just plain timber supplier, operating from an…read moreunlikely location in the dead centre of the North Laines. Recently, our banisters became a casualty at the hands of a particularly raucous party. As the smoke and debris cleared, it became apparent that we'd lost five of them, which we later found, irreparably splintered and bust, on the floor. Not being defeatists, and having evening jobs that allowed for a lot of time in the days, me and my flatmate decided to build some replacements. We picked up some glue and nails from Dockerill's hardware shop and headed down the road to North Road Timber for our wood. When we arrived the staff were intensely involved in a conversation about timber, which I chose to view as reassuring. When we got their attention, they were helpful, and didn't mind taking some time aside to discuss with us the various merits and shortcomings of different types and thicknesses of wood for use as banisters. We walked out with enough wood for eight banisters for just over a fiver. Don't be fooled into thinking that banisters are the beginning and end of the possibilities that this shop has to offer though: two floors of several different timbers, in various states of prepreparation and prefabrication, from raw wood to already formed mantelpieces, and other fixtures. Also, it's worth mentioning that the place smells great. While it's large for a premises on the North Laines, it's quite small for a building materials supply shop, and so is limited in its capacity and range. Still, I'd gladly recommend it for anyone in need of refitting their wooden fixtures; for simple things, you're spoilt or choice.

If you're looking for Victorian floorboards, doors, skirting or worktops, this is a great place to start. Stock changes regularly and as the staff are happy to tell you, each piece of wood has it's own character and history. Last time I visited, there was a small selection of old decking from the Palace Pier complete with old nails and footprints. If you don't fancy making your own furniture, the Wood Store also sells distinctive coffee tables, benches, dining tables, bookshelves and garden planters made. Everything is made on the premises by staff and looks suitably hand-made. They're also happy to create bespoke picture frames, boxes and individual pieces for customers if there's a particular timber you like.

They stock most sizes of DIY and building timbers plus wood for making wood products, sculpting, turning and carving. The best part is that they'll cut to size, and treat it however you need including sanding, waxing and oiling. What I love more than anything though is the gift section, they've gpt everything from planters, bird boxes, benches, trays and vases that have clearly been made with love.
