We're a family of 4 Vegans and we decided to give Voltaire a go after reading lots of positive…read morereviews. I can honestly say that it exceeded our expectations and then some! Firstly, the restaurant and its location: Voltaire is situated near to Bangor pier. It's an attractive, bohemian restaurant with Moroccan style colours and furnishings but with a few modern twists thrown in like skateboard decks on the walls in place of the usual wooden carvings. It's a relaxing, cosy place to eat and a lovely place to spend a few hours. The staff: All of the staff were super-friendly, attentive but somehow still totally chilled! They were really helpful when we were choosing from the menu and genuinely seemed excited by the food that they offered. The food: Obviously I'm saving the best bit to last with this review! What can I say about the food? Well, it's not a "wholefood" menu like the veggie restaurants of old that's for sure. Voltaire's menu is so naughty that you have to pinch yourself to remember that it's 100% Vegan! The initial difficulty is choosing as everything sounds sooooo tasty. When we eventually decided what we wanted we went for: * 'The Voltaire Burger' - Their homemade burger which is topped with mushrooms in a white wine sauce. * 'The Big V BLT' - Again, their homemade burger but this time topped with to-die-for Vegan bacon. * 'The Howlin' Wolf Platter' - This is under their 'Table Picnic' menu and is a sharing platter which two of us devoured and which the other two kept jealously pinching things from! It comes with 2 x cheeseburgers, mac n cheese, sticky Vegan ribs, southern fried tofu plus fries, salsa and coleslaw as sides and a few huge onion rings. It was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and every bit of it tasted beautiful. For dessert two of us had: * 'The Rocky Road Sundae' - This had layers of chocolate brownie with marshmallows, ice cream, skinny Oreos and squirty cream and was fantastic. Drinks: * They had sold out of cider so I had a Conwy black IPA which was great. They had other beers too. * Voltaire has an extensive wine and cocktail menu. For "dessert" I had a Mojito which was really good and a nice way to finish what was a very special meal. Summary: Voltaire is an absolute gem. A Vegan wonderland nestling by the seaside. We can't wait to go back and try some of the other treats their menu has to offer!

Positives: -Cosy space -Named after Voltaire. -Vegan; an usual find in a small town like Bangor. Negatives: -Voltaire used to have a great menu, my favourite item was the seitan skewers. They've since removed these and I can't find anything I like on the menu. It's all overly fried and fatty. Overall there are more positives than negatives. I will return, but please bring back the seitan skewers!

There is some free car parking nearby but immediately outside the restaurant the car park is entered through a barrier to which you have to pay in order to gain access. There is a children's play area adjacent to the car park and you can also walk the length of the pier. Although children are made welcome as always in Italian restaurants, this is a lovely place to go for a grown up Italian meal. Although the usual pizzas and pastas are available they have additional more unusual menu items to tempt your appetite. The food is very well prepared and presented and the staff are friendly and make an effort to make the experience special.

An excellent restaurant. Good value and generous sized portions. It has the normal Italian food as…read moreyou would expect but also more adventurous things of which I have tried a few and they are just as delicious. The one BIG problem is that they do not answer their telephone, and there is no answerphone. It is a very good restaurant and as such is often busy and if you just turn up it is unlikely that you will get a table. So to reserve you MUST phone in the evening of the day before you want to go, as they only ever answer their phone in the evening. There is a car park right next to the restaurant with a barrier and a £1 charge, but there is plenty of free street parking nearby if you would rather avoid paying for parking. (It is not the restaurant's own car park, they have nothing to do with the charge, it is a council car park for people visiting the pier). It is also worth noting that this restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays and open evenings only, not lunchtimes. The staff are charming and go out of their way to make sure everything is to your satisfaction and they often stop and have a chat beyond just food, asking where you are from and what you do in life etc., which is always nice. All in all a fantastic restaurant that you can visit again and again as there is a good sized menu that is regularly changed according to season.
