Dirtty's Jazz & Blues House is officially open for business. My bestie and I checked it out the…read moreother night during our spontaneous Miller Beach pub crawl, and it was pretty OK. I have to admit, the place is waaaaay bigger on the inside than expected. There's a large u-shaped bar with nice lighting, some small high-top tables and chairs, a stage toward the back for the live jazz and blues bands, and even a lounge area with a fireplace and cozy chairs & end tables. Cute and trendy, a nice place for a date. The servers are prompt and friendly. But we ordered Stoli and sodas and pretty much got huge glasses of just vodka on the rocks. I'm not convinced the bartenders really know how to mix a drink, but I'll try a different cocktail next time (although it's kinda hard to mess up a Stoli and soda, right?). The flyer for Dirtty's says in big, bold letters "Adults 40 and Up" which could be just the kind of vibe your looking for, or maybe not your thing at all. Either way, they're very up front about it. My friend happens to be 30 and joked the whole night about being upset that she wasn't carded. C'est la vie. Currently they are open Thursday through Sunday and charge a reasonable $5 cover. Our drinks were $7 each, which is also reasonable considering it was a giant glass of vodka. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Dirtty's and will probably be back. Since they just recently opened, I will forgive the mediocre drink and hope for the best next time. It really is a cute place to enjoy a cocktail with friends and hear some live music by the fire.

Second time I tried to visit was on 2017 New Years Eve. My husband and I pulled in parking lot about 8:30ish and you could hear the music playing from outside but again when we got to door it was locked and we tried knocking but no one ever came to door. The Windows are made of glassblock so that wasn't helpful when trying to knock. I've tried to contact by Facebook, email and phone and have failed to get through. Really disappointed as I would love to see what this place has to offer. However, a business that has wrong contact information on their site and no recent updates on their webpage makes you wonder about the establishment.

Unfortunately, Calumet City succumbed to a sad combination of white flight and city officials Hell bent on destroying the State and Stateline entertainment corridor, leveling solid historic properties into a barren surface level wasteland, that remains void to this very day. We were once guided by the bright neon signs and chasing lights, like a mini-Las Vegas strip it was. God forbid someone was drinking, carrying on, staying out until past 4 a.m. and having a Gay ole time. So here we are at Dick's R U Crazy, this lone Gay venue has been established in 1990 and serves as a beacon of life for area Gays. It offers a traditional Gay bar feel from back in the day with two (2) chalk dusty pool tables and an eclectic variety of your usual patrons. A corridor leads past the restrooms on the right that opens up into a lounge area with intimately lit tables, a stage and runway avec drag drapes. However, classic Drag shows and those once crowned as bar royalty, drag queens, have been replaced in a new world favoring karaoke. Ugh! You cannot miss what you do not know. In my opinion, today's bar music or what I heard at Dick's was a bore. It's choppy and doesn't flow one song to the next. Who wants to hear and see Seth Meyers bash Trump on Big TV screens on a Friday night in your bar? A total waste of fun time! There must be something far more entertaining and uplighting to fill in the background with to get people up and dancing. Dancing!!? What the F..k is that? One might ask! Dick's R U Crazy is a Gay oasis in a desolate desert environment that doesn't offer many better options short of going into Boystown/Chicago . Hopefully one day the Calumet Region Gay scene will rebound. Dick's R U Crazy is a continuing work in progress.

You could tell all the patrons have been there for quite a while. She finished up with them. Stared at me then skipped over me to ask the man next to me if he was ready for another. Then proceeded to go around the whole bar, serving the people that had drinks in front of them already. Tried ignoring me again as she passed by. When I asked, "Excuse me. May I have a drink?" She told me she was busy and I needed to be patient. 20 mins of sitting there, she finally blesses me with the ability to receive a drink. I have never been a bartender, but I'm pretty sure you should at least attempt to serve someone that just walked in before serving the other extremely intoxicated costumers that are already on their 6th or 7th drink. Horrible service. If she had the profession I have. It would be considered neglect. My advice, get someone that is more pleasant to the costumers, and that knows how to perform their job correctly.

I am not sure if it takes place here or the building right next-door, but they are part of the same venue. Maybe just sniffer names? But the venue is nice, it's dark, which I do like because when you're on stage, the audience isn't something that you can really see so it makes you feel a little more comfortable. The DJs are super nice and friendly and very supportive. There's great singers, mediocre singers, first timers that are really nervous and you can tell but everybody cheers them on! Karaoke is not about being the best singer in the house. No one's gonna get discovered by a record label here. We are all just here to have fun and sing songs we like. The bartender that usually works is super awesome and really nice. The drinks are really good and decently priced and they have a bunch of different snack foods that you can get. In the rockstar karaoke room you can always go next-door and order food and have it brought over . While the rockstar karaoke area just has appetizers. That's been my main experience. I haven't gone there on other nights, but they have a nice stage and sound system with cool lighting and bands. Come and play there. I haven't seen any bands there yet, but I'm definitely interested.
