I had the absolute worse dental experience with a root canal performed by Dr. Sharma. After about 12-15 minutes, Dr. Sharma entered the room. Dr. Sharma confirmed the need for a root canal. The procedure began about 11:20am. I was given several anesthesia injections, one in my hard palate behind tooth#3 was quite painful. No cold numbing of the palate prior to the injection was utilized. After the anesthesia was injected and when Dr Sharma began to work, I notified her that my tooth was still sensitive. She told me that was OK and the pain I felt was due to inflammation. Throughout the procedure, I had live nerve pain, feeling like a severe electric shock. This happened 7 times. In all past procedures, throughout my lifetime, I have never suffered with this severe electric shock-like experience. The assistant would blow air on the exposed live nerve causing more of these electric shock-like experiences. It was obvious to me that the anesthesia given before the procedure began was grossly insufficient. At no time over the following 45 minutes did Dr. Sharma administer additional anesthesia. At one point I removed all the appliances from my mouth and told Dr. Sharma I needed a 5-minute break; I needed a break for this torture-like root canal experience. Upon returning to the chair, Dr. Sharma proceeded to continue with the root canal procedure and this procedure continued to produce sever pain. I probably flinched 20+ times from the pain. Dr. Sharma then told me to hold on for 10 seconds and she inserted an electrified rod into my tooth (probably to cauterize the tissue from bleeding). This procedure was extremely painful since the nerves in the roots were not fully anesthetized. In frustration, about 12:15 pm, she said there was nothing more she could do today, closed up the tooth with cotton and a temporary filling and told me to come back in a week. My #3 tooth was more painful, even with the anesthesia she administered, than before I entered her procedure room. She then told me that the pain I had been feeling was due to inflammation and because I did not take the ibuprofen prior to the procedure. For the next day and a half, the pain I was experiencing in tooth #3 was beyond excruciating. I have medical school teaching experience including neurobiology and presently teach in an anesthesiology program. The care I experienced at this clinic was absolutely inexcusable. read more
