If you want FOOD POISONING, absolutely waste your time and money going to Blue Ox. There are customers who can't even wait to get home before they are sick and running to the bathroom. It appears from several experiences I've had with this restaurant, that the food preparation is not in compliance and an inspection of this place is long overdue. Most everything this restaurant makes is out of a can, jar or bag. Almost nothing is homemade. What few things they actually cook, are cheap, low quality, and tasteless. One of my family members ordered the salmon; it was overcooked on the outside, undercooked on the inside, and hard as a rock. Potato appeared to be a re-bake (baked previously, then baked again) and looked wet? Salad was old tasting. Yep, they got sick from eating it. I won't repeat what happened to me, as I don't want that image stuck in your mind. My assumption is that almost all, if not all, of the kitchen staff have not been trained properly on food safety regulations; including food handling, preparation, personal cleanliness, and clean attire. Don't bother with this place. There are other establishments that won't leave you squirming on the ground, calling for an ambulance. They are under new ownership. There was a male owner who was awesome BUT the female owner is rude, beyond rude! Beyond rude!! I ordered the catfish, it was oily and watery. I told the male owner, who was very kind about it. He didn't make me pay for it and I got something else, which was good. We have been here several times. During the week has been okay, but the weekend, particularly sundays the food seems worse. But I don't expect a ton from a small diner. I do; however, expect better service. I was there this morning with my one year old son and my husband. Our waitress appeared to be under the influence of something and almost spilled hot coffee on my sons head. Then when she brought the tray of food she held it over my sons head and almost dropped it on him. I had to ask her multiple times to not do that over his head. I cannot believe Covid safety policies NOT being followed. Menus not wiped or sanitized. No social distancing, the place was full. Customers walking around, no masks, entering with no masks. Can clearly view BOH not wearing masks. Commonly shared bottles of ketchup and jelly caddies. The busser cleaning tables with a micro fiber cloth not sanitizing either. I have lived in this town basically all my life. I only come here if the person I'm with insists on coming here. I personally am not a fan. The vibe is passive and slightly aggressive. Some of the waitress are rude and impatient. Today, my fiancé and I received our silverware and drinks and the waitress basically threw our silverware at us and gave us the wrong drinks. My water glass had lipstick stains on it, but I didn't feel comfortable to ask for a new one because it would obviously cause a ruckus. This is one of four local breakfast restaurants I've frequented over the years (the others being Corner Cafe, Swiss Alps, and Red Apple Inn), and I will be comparing Blue Ox to these three. First, the food quality. Of the four, the average quality here is the worst. The food comes cold the most often here, and the taste leaves something to be desired. Kind of difficult to explain beyond that, it just has an off taste, and that's coming from somebody who is in no way a picky eater. Very inconsistent overall, with no real standouts offered on the menu. The building itself is fine, a basic restaurant diner, a few booth seats duck taped but overall I found it to be clean and pleasant to eat at. The wait time was very hit or miss, regardless of how busy the establishment was (it's usually fairly slow on weekdays), and considering the quality of food (or lack thereof), Blue Ox really has no excuse for its sluggishness the way The Corner Cafe does. Finally, the wait staff. This is where The Blue Ox falls apart the hardest. It seemed that a few years ago they were having trouble finding good help, for they went through a large quantity of bad waitresses, each one worse than the last, constantly being on their phone and not bothering to do anything beyond basic requirements, even when reprimanded by their bosses. Even with the staff being fairly consistent in recent years, it's still not that good. There is one excellent waitress, who worked Thursday mornings (if this is still the case I'm unsure), but the rest were passable at best, but blatantly rude at worst. One in particular was very condescending numerous times, and getting the check was often a hassle. Overall, I cannot recommend The Blue Ox, especially if you have the option of any of the other three restaurants listed at the beginning. This was one of my favorite restaurants as a child back in its Country Kitchen days, but those seem to be long gone. read more

We had breakfast at the Blue Ox and it was one of the worst experiences we had in years. About 5 minutes after we got our food, we heard a loud sizzling, scorching sound. The cook was cleaning the grill and whatever he was using made my throat burn. The smell was so nasty we couldn't taste our food. The smell dominated our senses. I got the Vegetarian Skillet and the veggies were overcooked and greasy. The eggs were not hot. The sausage seemed like it had been reheated three times and was tough. I have frequented this establishment since it first opened . In the distant past had 2 issues with the the lights and open sign being on and we have a group of 6 people with us and they said their closed . When I have visited them when they where open service and food was great till today ! 4 out of 7 meals completely nasty we couldn't eat salad if you like to call it that lacked everything beyond lettuce, a few rings of onions and a half a tomato slice with dressing. Fries and chicken tasted like it was cooked in really old grease . The 3 pasta dishes where huge portions but the pasta was either over cooked or the Alfredo sauce was bad which all of the pastas had some or whole Alfredo sauce in . Liver and baked potato was good . Ham wrap was good and pot roast and generic mashed potatoes where ok . The onion soup was a sweet extremely salty plus it didn't have any cheese like normal. Not sure what happened but they definitely better figure it out !! Then the manager was trying to put words in my mouth saying we wanted all the meals free ... I never once said that ! pretty sad when just a few bites where taken out of the 4 dishes and the fries and no way in hell we even wanted to take it home or with those odds of bad tasting food think of ordering anything different! Two of us stopped in here for breakfast on Sunday. This is the old Country Kitchen location. They have not updated the building at all, if my memory of long ago working at a Country Kitchen serves. Even the vinyl tape on thte booth seats was the same. First the good: the wait staff was very good; friendly, quick; the food arrived quickly and hot - even tho it was Mother's Day and everyone in Monroe was taking Mom out to breakfast. The menu is the typical family style choices of pancakes, eggs, kids menu, etc. Now the bad: Coffee was weak with no flavor other than bitterness. Contrasted sharply with the coffee we had at the Peppercorn Farm the evening before. We both had the Denver omelet. I take issue with so many restaurants calling this an omelet. It's SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH ADDED INGREDIENTS. IT IS NOT AN OMELET! There, now I feel better. It tasted fine, cooked thru and not overly done. Closing, I hope this is not the best Monroe has to offer for a breakfast. I need coffee in the morning that I can appreciate. read more

Went here for the 1st time yesterday to enjoy dinner with the family. My wife could barely make it through her onion soup before horrible stomach cramping, and her face flushed red and her temp started rising. We left and within half an hour she was suffering from headaches, severe stomach cramps, vomiting repeatedly, fever, cold chills, and onset of running to the bathroom, nearly every sign possible of food poisoning. That was yesterday and shes no different 1e hrs later. We will never be going back, and would never recommend anyone to eat here. Turn around and don't set a foot inside this establishment It was a REALLY big mistake wasting our money and time here. !!We had the fastest service I ever had for a meal delivered but ....Everything that we were served for breakfast was almost cold. I believe our food was either in a warmer or microwaved and not cooked to order. My eggs had a terrible taste from something that they were scrabbled in or on. Tasted like old oil or a grill that wasn't scrapped and cleaned. I asked for my steak medium and it was well done with no pink. Our plates came with each other's eggs on the wrong plate. The syrup dispenser was so dirty and marked maple but was blueberry which ruined the cold French toast. There was no jelly on the table for the toast and waitress never offered any. Well the bathroom wasn't much better and smelled like moth balls. When we we checked out at the register the owner asked how our meal was. I replied just so so and she never asked why.
